As the legislative session continues in Phoenix, several pro-gun bills are progressing and need your attention. The state House is currently scheduled to consider two important self-defense reforms on Third Reading and recently passed Senate Bill 1467, campus protection legislation. SB 1467 will have to be reconsidered by the full Senate to accept an NRA-backed House amendment. The Senate will also consider House Bill 2645, a firearms rights restoration bill, which is scheduled for it’s Third Reading next week.

On April 7, Senate Bill 1467 passed in the House by a 33 to 24 vote with three no-votes. With a recently added NRA-backed amendment, SB 1467 would prohibit an educational institution from adopting or enforcing any policy prohibiting the possession of a concealed weapon by a permit holder or regulating the lawful transportation or storage of a firearm. This self-defense reform bill would only enable those legally allowed by state and federal law to carry a firearm on a college or university campus to do so, ending the arbitrary boundaries where a person can lawfully carry a firearm for self-defense.

House Bill 2645 now awaits its third and final reading before moving to the Governor’s desk. This bill is designed to meet the requirements of the federal NICS Improvement Amendments Act of 2007 by enabling persons who have lost their firearm rights because of a mental health-related commitment or adjudication to petition a court to have them restored. Before granting a petition, the court would have to find that the person is not likely to act in a manner that is dangerous to public safety and that granting the requested relief would not be contrary to the public interest. This bill will ensure that people who can safely and responsibly possess firearms are not unnecessarily deprived of their rights.

Please contact your state Senator today and respectfully urge him or her to vote for SB 1467 and HB 2645. To find your state Senator and their contact information, please click here.

Senate Bill 1201 would, among other things, remove arbitrary bans across the state on carrying a firearm for self-defense. This pro-gun bill is a comprehensive firearms reform measure which would make a number of improvements to Arizona’s carry laws. Most importantly, it would help put an end to “gun free” signs limiting your right to carry in most currently prohibited places and unsecured buildings. This reasonable right-to-carry reform legislation is designed to prohibit the arbitrary lines which currently restrict your right to self-defense.

Senate Bill 1469, which has already succeeded its second reading in the House, would strengthen the current “Castle Doctrine” self-defense law by broadening the definition of reasonable use of force, including deadly force, to provide greater protection for those forced to defend themselves or family from an attacker. This legislation is critical to those would-be victims thrust into a life or death situation and would further protect the victim from becoming prosecuted as a criminal.

Both SB 1201 and SB 1469 are due for their third and final readings next week, so please contact your state Representative today and respectfully urge him or her to vote in favor of these NRA-backed bills.
