Firearms Class Offered to Local Teachers and School Administrators for Free

The Middlesex Sportsman's Hunt Club in Hartfield is pleased to offer a handgun training program just for teachers and school administrators. This “First Level" Pistol Course will be held on Saturday, March 9, at the MSHC Range in Hartfield.

According to firearms instructor, Barbara Wallace, after the Newtown, Conn. school shooting, the club has been inundated with requests for a gun safety class, especially from area teachers.” “The point of the class is not to arm teachers while in classrooms, but rather for them to learn about firearm safety, different kinds of guns, laws concerning firearm use and how to effectively use a gun,” added club president, and, high school teacher John Priest.

Currently by state law, teachers in Virginia are not allowed to carry weapons inside schools unless the firearms are to be used for educational purposes. Virginia law does allow teachers to have firearms in their vehicles, if the firearm is in a container and ammunition is not in the firearm, however, in some school systems teachers are at risk of losing their jobs if they have a firearm in their vehicle.

The class begins at 10am and ends at 4pm and will cover safe handling, operation, marksmanship, storage, transportation and state and federal firearms laws and more. Most of the instruction is indoors and the last two hours are conducted at the range, on the firing line. The lead instructor is Macey White. Mr. White has over 30 years experience and is a two time state champion, a two time national record setting pistol shooter and an NRA Instructor and Instructor Trainer.

The class, which normally costs $50, is offered at no charge to teachers from the counties of Middlesex, Gloucester, Mathews, or, Lancaster. Anyone interested in attending can contact chief instructor, Macey White at [email protected].
