Your Choice of Carry Gun

I just want to throw this thought out to all the women trying to figure out what caliber of handgun to purchase as your carry weapon. Don't let the size of the gun be your deciding factor. Find a gun that fits your grip comfortably, is small enough to conceal yet large enough (caliber wise) to do the job it is intended for. To stop any threat to your person as effectively as possible. The point I'm really trying to get across here is that those cute little guns that you can hide in the palm of your hand aren't going to have the stopping power you need to bring that 200lb criminal down before he gets to you. By the time you realize there is a threat you still have to react and no matter how fast you think you are your assailant has an advantage as he is already reacting. Do your best to always be aware of your surroundings and don't make yourself an easy target. Once you get your gun you need to practice, practice, practice, because when you need to use your gun to defend yourself the adrenaline will be flowing. Your accuracy will be greatly reduced compared to your best day at the range.

Good advice. Although I don't regret any of our gun purchases, we'd probably have two fewer in the arsenal if my wife had read this first. Everyone told her, "A woman's first gun should be a small revolver" so I bought her a S&W Bodyguard .38 which she took to the range and shot until her hand was bleeding between the thumb and forefinger. Next, we bought each other the Smith .380 Bodyguard semiautomatic. She was seriously disappointed at the accuracy at seven yards. Then she bought herself an XD9 compact and it met all of her requirements, especially the one about increased capacity. Being a bit too long for her CC purse, I got her the XD9 sub-compact which she carries with an extended mag., and those two guns have become the love of her life. I'm in third place, now.

To be specific,I was wondering if he had helped someone recently or just woke up one day and said to himself , "hey I feel moved to give the ladies advice." but thank you kindly for your "sarcasm." ;)

I should have said in my original post what had prompted me to give the advise. I spent the morning at a Required Concealed Carry class with a friend and the last hour of it was spent on the range. There were several women in the class and they all had tiny semi automatic handguns that resembled toys. I meant no sarcasm in my post and apologize for getting a little off point. What I wanted to stress most of all was that whatever the choice for your carry gun, it, and the person holding it need to be able to stop any threat.

I carry a Glock 22 in a Galco KingTuk holster and I just got a Sig Sauer P250 Compact .40 cal with a FoxxHolsters concealment holster. I love my new Sig.

I think your advice was great. I have larger hands for a woman and I didn't want one of those baby guns. Once my license comes in I will be carrying a Taurus PT111 9mm which I really love. My husband has a SIG P238 that when I first started shooting was too small for me and I really didn't like how my fingers hung off the grip. It was just too short for my comfort at the time. Now, after shooting more I don't mind it but I am still uncomfortable with smaller grips. If I could conceal my Glock 31 easier then that would be the one I would carry.

I had a Taurus 357 (8 3/8" barrel) that I had purchased years ago. My husband bought a couple pistols and urged me to "trade my gun in on something I could carry". I'm happy to say I took his advise and bought a Ruger SR9. It's not too big and not too small. I have a conceal carry purse that it fits in just fine. Now I don't worry as much knowing I have protection for my daughter and myself when we are out. I wasnt sure about changing from a revolver to a pistol, for obvious reasons, but am now quite comfortable with the pistol. I only wish there were more options for us women to carry on our person.

My husband and I have really been looking at the Ruger SR9C.. how do you like the SR9?

I love my Sig P238 carried inside the waistband in a Looper Leather "Betty" holster. Just got a Glock 26, but need more practice with that before I'll carry it.

I have a fondness for revolvers. I carry a Ruger LCR .38 SP+P. Love it. My home defense revolver is a S&W model 66, .357 magnum. Love that too, especially at the range. I really don't like pink. I wish they'd start making girly stuff in purple! (Harley Davidson makes the same mistake).

XD 40 sub compact or XDm 40 compact?

Did you mean XD 40 sub-compact or XDm 40 compact? I don't believe that Springfield make a 40 sub-compact on the XDm model.

I am in a similar boat. I have had a small .38 revolver for about 20 years, but it wasn't ideal for CCH. So, I bought a Ruger LCP .380. It is perfect for my purse. Not so fun to shoot though. lol I also just purchased the Sub-Compact XD9 and LOVE IT; however, I holster it for now. Still trying to work it with my CCH purse. Kind of funny some of us head down the same path. :)

I carry a "baby" glock. I really enjoy it but I'm thinking about trying out one of those Ruger revolvers. Any thoughts?
