Why there Is such a double standard in the gun community for men/women. A guy will say nothing below a .380,9mm,45, tank but is totally fine recommending a .22 to a women. Is a .22 capable of stopping the bad guy better with a women holding it? I just don’t get it ( I know a .22 beats a fighter jet left at home) but In my book if you can carry a .380 or 9 and are female do it. I still buy into the carry the biggest caliper (within reason for ccw) you can shoot well. Discuss………

Just made a purchase of a .380 SW for my wife and I. eventually i'll get one of my own for personal carry (or get her one of her own, since i really like the Bodyguard), but nobody recommended anything lower than a .380. I said, small caliber for my wife and sufficient heft and stopping power for me - what do you have? and so we bought it. Does anyone recommend .22 any more?

My wife picked up the Bodyguard Semi auto. She hated the SR22. I like her bodyguard but not crazy about the trigger, it could have a smoother finish to the pull before the hammer strikes. Did you notice the same with your Bodyguard?

You're absolutely correct, carry as big as you can comfortably shoot and carry. But, if someone is shooting for the first time I still think 22 is the way to go. Has nothing to do with the sex of the person but more with the ability of the shooter to hold the sight picture through trigger pull. I still maintain a well targeted round from a 22 is much better than a wild shot from a larger caliber. If your wife, girlfriend, daughter, etc is comfortable with a 380, by all means that's what she should have...if she's comfortable with a 50, thats what she should have.

Aw, face it. Anything under .9mm just isn't manly.

And who cares what kind of gun a woman is carrying, as long as it isn't aimed at you. Hmmm....maybe that is why a .22 is recommended so much.....in case it IS aimed at you.

My wife is definitely leaning towards a .9mm. She asked me the other day "can we get a nice one for $500?" I love her so much lol.

Im talking for Protection not training (nothing beats a .22 for training) My wife carries a .40 and if she cant she carries a .380 or 9mm I am happy she carries capable calipers and can almost outshoot me with a .40 Her training with a .22 made a big difference.

I simply don't get into the 'bigger is better' stuff, but its always fun to watch as the fur gets ruffled... so, here's a bit of fuel for someone's fire...

For self-defense: .22 beats .45

remember...its just for the fun of instigation...

Challenge accepted :.22 is a horrible caliper for self defense why? Because it is rim fire and very unreliable If someone’s 9mm had as many failures as a .22 they would (I hope) not carry it. You can prove out a gun to be reliable but you will never prove a .22 to be reliable due to ammo. I have had everything from bulk to velocitors fail in numerous .22’s over the years.

Edit to add: in very high numbers 1000's of rounds of failures.

Buying the biggest caliber you can shoot well isn't a double standard. Most women don't have the upper body strength that men do, including arms and hands. Their hands are also usually smaller, sometimes significantly so. Those factors very often mean a smaller caliber is going to the be biggest caliber they can shoot well. I prefer the 45 ACP and personally don't want to go to anything smaller, such as a 9mm. But my wife carries a 9mm because so far that's the largest caliber she can shoot comfortably. That isn't a double standard. It's a fact of physics and energy. There are biased people out there who are predisposed to think women can only shoot smaller calibers, but they aren't the norm as far as I've seen. But when someone talks about women carrying smaller caliber guns, you shouldn't assume it's based on bias. Just as is the case with my wife, it may just be a matter of what fits and works best.

I NEVER meant a 'challenge' on that reply-to-post .... just light hearted instigation.... however, I've been shootin for some 50+ years, I've always had .22's along with all the others (a bunch...32's -380's -38's -9's -44's -45's), and in all the time I've been connected to shooting, I've personally never experienced a .22 fail-to-fire, nor have I been present when anyone else experienced one. Maybe its some sort of dumb luck?

Now if we have to add fail-to-feed, fail-to-eject, bulged cases, burst cases, rim seperation...well, you bettcha, I've seen a bunch in every type of firearm that chambers them.

Anyhow, I would personally not recommend a .22LR for protection, no matter who would be using it, but I realize plenty of people DO actively carry them exclusively, and feel well enough protected. (I wish them all well, and a LOT of luck)

My opinion on this is a little skewed - I think my hands and arms are as numb as my head, but my shoulder is a raw nerve ending. I say this because I feel nothing when I'm firing a handgun, regardless of caliber. But shoot a high power slug through a lightweight shotgun? Makes me wanna cry.
And believe me, I'm a long way from a tough guy, but handgun recoil just doesn't register. Plus, I shoot/carry a Beretta PX4 .40, a handgun with an action that absorbs a lot of the recoil.
So if she asks me, I say carry the biggest launcher you can manage, ma'am.

I am starting my wife with a Ruger LCR .22 because she has never shot a gun before, nor has she ever before had an interest. The .22 is a great starter gun for minimal recoil, minimal noise and overall general gun handling. She has already expressed an interested in going to a larger caliber once she becomes proficient with the .22. Hey, if this is what it takes to get her going, then so be it. Also concerning small calibers, there are some folks with physical disabilities that makes a larger caliber too tough for them to handle.

I don't particularly notice an issue with the smoothness of the trigger at the end, but i will say that it has an incredibly LONG pull. It's my first subcompact and from what i've noticed, they all have a fairly long pull. For what it is, it doesn't bug me at all. At the effective distances it isn't really an issue with accuracy.

I just like to say challenge accepted when I get the chance. If someone must carry a .22 due to a good reason I would at least say revolver so when it FTF you can go to the next one on another pull of the trigger.

I likewise have never had a FTF with any .22 that wasn't the fault of the poorly designed rifle. And that includes a few thousand rounds of 30 year old elcheapo stuff that I had stored for so long there was some corrosion on the bullets.

you ever wonder?
Why I'm not a billionaire?
.
Why I'm not some incredibly good looking Hollywood movie star?
.
Why I won't stay young looking and physically active until the day I die of old age, in my sleep, peacefully, at 118?
.
Why they didn't invent Viagra just because everybody wanted to be as good as me in the sack?
.
Why the guy in the Dos Equis beer commercials isn't jealous of me?
.
.
Nah. Never crossed my mind. Why do you ask?
