XDS .45 or 9mm?

I own and have owned several handguns. I now use mostly XD & XDS. I have 9mm in XD and .45 in an XDS and a Kimber Ultra Carry. I want to maintain one platform to enable optimum response in a critical time. So, I may trade-in the Kimber for another XDS (I have had my other one updated by SA and love the way it fires). I am open to recommendations on maintaining one caliber to maximize usability between pistols. With the smaller XDS I have always felt that it is going to be used in close quarters and the .45 would be more forgiving of an off-core hit and cause more damage and subsequently, stopping power. Thoughts on remaining .45 with XDS or moving to one ammo; 9mm? Thanks.

I had both. The 9mm is easier to shoot and stay on target, which is the most important thing IMO. The which round starts the debate; whole big hole vs expansion. Not going there.

Lighten Up Francis.

Thanks for both replies. I fully agree that the 9mm is easier to stay on target. I shared your thoughts with a combat buddy - former special ops guy that still works in the 'protection industry'. He claims that most gun fights are less than 10 feet distance and if you have any skills we should be making the shot from that distance. He claims a hit from the .45 will be more destructive and forgiving. He also claims that his former spec op buddies have gone from the 9mm back to the .45 ACP as they are more effective in close quarter house clearing, etc. Just sharing. Still have not made up my mind. Thanks again for your thoughts.

I have the XD-S .45, but would have gotten the 9mm if it was available at the first of the year. No complaints, but a little less window rattling is always good.

I got my first 45 , an XDS about a year ago and now it is back at the factory on recall. Wanted to diversify a littly in case 9 gets hard to get. I had not even had a chance to shoot it yet. Looking foward to getting it back soon.

Got mine (.45) back a few weeks ago. Trigger pull is glass smooth to break now, but heavier. I'll "shoot around" that issue. It's my EDC...again.

Have both, and have gotten both back from recall (no range time yet... shot fine without any problems before). Actually thinking about going back to my XD(M) compacts for EDC and home defense (again, have both 45ACP and 9mm). I don't feel the size difference is that substantial between the two - the XD(M) 9mm actually feels the most comfortable in hand) - and regardless of which one you choose, the ammo capacity is markedly better. With a standard mag plus one configuration and an extra-capacity magazine, you have 23 rounds of 45ACP or 33 rounds of 9mm versus 13 rounds or 17 rounds, respectively, for the XD-S. Although, I carry two extra-capacity backups with the XD-S, so realistically 20 or 26 rounds, but this doubles the necessary mag changes.

Nice little guns, but recoil and back-on-target is definitely faster with the 9mm. Go with a little bigger, and IMO, better in-hand fit, more comfortable dynamics, and more rounds at the ready.

As the saying goes there's no replacement for displacement. 230gr vs 115gr. Would you rather punch someone or hit them with a sledge hammer. Bigger wound channels too.

One other thing to think about. Can you actually completely control a .45 with just one hand? I carried an XD compact .45 for years, but a freak (minor) accident to my carry hand caused me to rethink the whole idea. I'm naturally ambidextrous, so I was able to train my "off" hand quickly, but I found I was not able to shoot well at all with either hand alone. I bought an XD compact 9mm, and have confidence that I can hit what I aim at, both hands or either hand alone.

The larger hole or damage doesn't mean a lot if you MISS. Well, unless that miss hits something or someone you DON'T want to shoot. :)

but staring down a half inch pipe should be enough to make a BG piss himself and if ya miss the shockwave should be persuasive to end the confrontation.

Kids have been playing video games for years and now they have grown up into BGs. In the video games they get killed but get to try again. It is my belief that now they really do not believe they can be killed! So they could be looking down the barrel of a cannon that would not scare them.

In a stressful situation both the 9mm and 45 will bounce. As previously said most encounters are less than seven yards (21ft) and closing. My choice would be the 45cal. Makes a nice big hole.

I have the 45 and love it. I would like to try out the 9. I will say this though. After about 100 rounds it gets rough on the wrist and leaves that awesome checkered print on the palms of your hands.

I have the .45 and love it I took it out again today for the second time since it came back, I also forgot how this is a hard hitting sucker. I had my G19 along with it too and since I have been shooting this is my winter gun. The XDs you can hide it so that it will disappear on your side, I think that we should have both, a 9mm and a .45.

It is uncanny how the .45 (or 9) nearly disappears in my OWB or IWB holsters.

Wish I could afford the 9. I already have holsters for the .45, so would save hundreds in that department. The XD-S 9mm wouldn't be my first choice in a 9mm sidearm, as there are many out there that are better with round capacity and such, but I'm already committed because of my .45 holsters.

Recoil and getting back on target are not a issue, when the pistol is held correctly. A carefully placed shot usually trumps caliber.

I love my XDs I took it out for the second time last week since I got it back from the Doctor office, and like we have said it disappear on your side. I had one of my 7 rounds mag cut down to 6 rounds, why so I can carry one more inside my XDs and the one or two 7 rounds mag suite me find.
