HILLSBOROUGH, N.H. -- A Navy veteran is fighting to be able to show his patriotism by flying an American flag outside his apartment building.

Joe LeVangie, 88, said he's upset after he and his neighbors were told to take their flags down because flying them was against management policy. He said there should be an exception for the flag.

LeVangie, a World War II veteran, said he used to fly his American flag outside his apartment at the Maple Leaf complex in Hillsborough.

"In respect for all the troops serving overseas now and for those who never came back," he said.

But recently, his management company told all residents that their flags had to come down. The brackets for the flag poles were also removed.

"I was madder than hell," he said. "Come to find out, it was the maintenance man who was told to do so."

The same thing happened to Margery Kenney, who lives next door. Her brackets were taken down, and her flag is now rolled up against the wall.

"My whole family was in the service, and it's a shame something like this was allowed to happen," she said.

EJL Management said the flags violate a blanket policy prohibiting such displays. A letter sent to LeVangie said a letter sent to him by the company said it was part of a policy that also prohibits lawn ornaments and grills.

The company said that to honor residents' patriotism, a flag was placed at the entrance of Maple Leaf. But LeVangie said a single flag is not enough.

"Why should it be sufficient?" he said. "Is the one in Concord sufficient for the state of New Hampshire?"

LeVangie's rent is subsidized by the federal government. A representative from the Department of Housing and Urban Development said EJL is complying with the Freedom to Display the American Flag Act of 2005.

Well, if the American flag isn't good enough for them, then maybe American money isn't, either. He should pay his rent in pesos, or something, and see how that flies. Such bullsh#t...

If he signed the contract saying he would obey the rules of the apartment complex, then I see the issue having 'legs'...

If it were his private property that he owned and not renting,
Then that would be something entirely different...

It's like the idiots driving down the road with an American flag on top their cars...
Tattered, dirty, getting the crap beat out of it.
That just shows disrespect and shouldn't be done, but some people don't see it that way.

Several of the local homeowners associations won't let you fly flags, American, NASCAR, Rainbow or otherwise,
And If you agreed to that home owner's associations contract, you are bound by it.
You signed away your rights, now you have to live with it...
---------------------

Besides, there is a dead issue, the veterns and others are allowed to fly American flags provided they are in good condition,
Someone should read the updates as they happen if they are going to comment/complain about this.

to all,

imVho, each of the 50 states MUST pass a LAW that states that NO entity whether PUBLIC, SEMI-PUBLIC and/or PRIVATE may discourage, penalize or deny any person their right to fly their own US/STATE/RELIGION's flags on any property that they rent, lease and/or occupy lawfully.

further, if i was writing those laws, i would put a "penalty clause" in each contract which states that the leasing agency/agent UNDERSTANDS that ANY attempt to deny residents/leasees/occupants those rights is in KNOWING violation of said laws & that NO such agency or their agents may attempt to discriminate against any such person in renting/leasing/occupying ANY property, lest they suffer both civil & criminal penalties for such policy or attempt.

yours, TN46

Any time, we can be told to NOT fly the US flag, here in the USA, SOMETHING is wrong. And it's past time it got fixed.

Dear God, I feel sick. Friends what is becoming of our Nation?

I remember after 9/11, there were American flags everywhere. The only reason this crap goes on is because society does not feel threatened. If the SHTF again, those flags will go back up and the cry babies will go back under the s_ _t hole they crawled out from!
