Would a solid bullet penetrate better than a JHP or Hydroshock?

My primary magazine has 230 grain Hydra Shok. One of the spare mags usually has ball. To tell the truth, it's MUCH more likely to be used letting a friend try the gun, firing off a few rounds for fun and practice, or punching a hole in something (redneck drill :biggrin than it is to be fired at a barricaded attacker. Ball is a whole lot cheaper than premium defensive ammo if you just want to fire a few rounds.

I like .45 bullets, because they come "pre-expanded;" big heavy bullets are usually effective, regardless of shape. But we always keep expanding ammo in the nines and .357s.

If I was wearing my. 44 magnum Mountain Gun, I wouldn't worry too much about having hollowpoints. Those 320 grain flat nosed cast "bear loads" I bought from Pioneer Ammo a few years ago might do the job. Although I have JHP rounds for my Freedom Arms .454, if I ever used a .454 (or the .500 Smith) for defense, I wouldn't lose any sleep worrying about whether it was loaded with hollowpoints. Elmer Keith proved the effectiveness of big, heavy, square shouldered, flat nosed bullets.

I do wonder, however, if that new Hornady Critical Defense (or any other round with a plastic or rubber insert in the nose) would get around New Jersey's insane ban on hollowpoints.

I'm a revolver guy. How do 158gr Lead Semi Wadcutters play into this equation? They are solid but soft.

FME wadcutters can kill at close range but beyond 10' or so they'll only hurt like hell.

I have .357 w/140 gr Lawman Ammo for home defense and figure that'll do the trick.

In 380 ammo it is recommended and confirmed through testing that one should carry FMJ ball type ammo because the HP rounds only penetrate 12 to 13 inches not the 16 minimum that is needed.

IIRC 12-13" is almost out the back of a human torso and would surely be enough to inflict serious if not fatal injury.

380 auto is good for up close and personal defense. I'd not be throwing it through barriers in an attempt to disable an attacker.
Some 380s falter when feeding hollow points so try the type you are planning to load. A spare mag with some ball is a plan B in case...

If given the choice, I'd carry a J frame with good 38 Spec +P loads and if the perp or BG ducked for cover, I'd move away and leave the cops and robbers stuff to the cops. Live to fight another day if need be...

I know some officers on street duty who carry HP and ball in the same magazine - HP first then ball in case they need to go through car doors or windshields, etc. I carry HP in big caliber for anticipated close work.

I just sleep with a pistol in case I HAVE to shoot before I can get to the 870. Then I use slugs in case there's a bad guy hiding behind another bad guy. Ammo is expensive, why waste it. :biggrin:

I keep PDX1 in the primary magazine for both my .45 and 9mm and keep FMJ in the three additional magazines — I use different colored bags for each handgun. With my Judge I keep a mix of Federal Premium .410 for PD and SilverTip .45 Colts along with a speedloader of each as well as a variety of loose rounds in its bag. Each bag also has an IWB holster for the handgun should I decide to leave the carry bag in the vehicle.

All quality JHP ammo, especially the bonded type or solid type such as DPX, penetrate coever just as well as FMJ bullets, sometimes better then.

There is absolutely no reason at all to use FMJ ammo for defense. Having both types of ammo in your magazine is an even worse idea.


As to the post above ref 16" being a minimum acceptable panetration, I would have to ask "who says so?". The FBI minimum is 12"
