working on a social work degree in Louisiana

I am in my junior year of school for my BA in social work. I hope to work for CPS when I graduate. I do not have my ccw license yet, but plan on obtaining it in the near future. I am not sure how my local offices feel, but I know the national association of social workers is strictly opposed to concealed carry. At the end of the day, considering the neighborhoods I may visit and the potential for angry clients, I will carry even if it means job loss if I am found out, or God forbid, have to defend myself. I would rather alive and unemployed than dead and employed

I read a lot of conflict of feelings in this post. You want to help 'society' but consider that that same society might do you harm. Sort of begs the question are you going to give them money and food stamps and shoot them if they don't be nice?
My suggestion would be to go into law enforcement - similar societal obligations but you can carry and shoot people legally.

Going off what JSD said, it definitely feels like you are not wholly committed to the job of being a social worker. In my opinion, it seems like you want to help lower class children stuck in bad situations, but you are afraid of the lower class because of things like their higher prevalence of violence. It sounds bad to say but JSD was right in the sense that social workers shouldn't be afraid of and ready to kill the people they are committed to help.
If you want to help people and get kids out of bad homes while maintaining your safety, carry a gun and tazer and be a cop.

Deserteagle - I appreciate the added post, I think you said it better than I did.

My wife worked for a "social agency" with abused children. - Not the "Social Work" department that was made up of a bunch of nuts. - She was there to help the kids and parents stay together. The "locals" recognized this and protected her. There wasn't a person in the neighborhoods she went to who would mess with her. (For fear of the residents.) Not so, of those who worked with the SW department. - Those assigned by the courts. Those folks were open game. You have to know what side you are on. Make your mind up about what you want to do now. The social work field is full of one hundred and ten percent libs and you are NOT going to make them comfortable. (concealed will mean concealed) You have to love it. Most "counselors" burn out before 5 years. Too big of case load, too much pressure, too much red tape and too many hours. Wife now teaches special ed. she made it 7 years.
I wish you the best of luck. You are on a truly noble adventure.

I am not necessarily afraid because the people are poor or otherwise. I just know that any parent might be stressed and angry if I was snooping around and had a possibility to take their kids away. I want to carry to protect myself in work and as I'm out and about for any other reason. My goal is to help children. I am poor myself. My only reasons for not carrying already is that I don't have the disposable income for the permit and a new more compact gun. Mine are larger and don't easily hide well on my body or pockets as I am large as well

Tucker's Mom, allow me to offer a humble thank you for calling me a true Texan.
We've been down here for 5 generations and I always try to measure up.

Mental health therapits

Hi chain saw I have been in the human services for about 20 years and I encourage you to continue on to get yor msw. It's worth it. Second there is nothing wrong with being cautious when servicing consumers within their social surroundings. They fear being there also. I worked as a mental health mibile therapist for a year. I almost was robbed once going to a clients home. Sad to say I worked in nj the armpit of the world where my ltcf (ccw) from pa is not recognized. If you feel you need to carry do it!

I carry every day in philly, pa as a mobile mental health therapist. Why? Well some of my clients self medicate (crack) and live under the hood (projects).

Oh yea and I'm from the hood so I can say that. Crime is random be prepared. Having a gun is like having a spare tire in the trunk you never know when your going to need it. Excuse the typos I'm on my phone.

Crockery I tell you! Nothing wrong with helping people but refusing to be victimized. Get your chl and get some martial arts/self defense training. Once your fully able to defend yourself your confidence will translate to your position in the social hierarchy.

Chainsaw,
Good for you !!!! Im glad you are willing to stand up for what YOU belive in. I would never put my safety in the hands of others.

@truckturner. I plan on starting work with my bachelor's. Where I'm at, most state offices will pay for your masters and allow you to work part time while receiving a stipend for the income lost by not being full time. Most of them only require you to sign a contract saying you'll stay for at least 5 years. Fine with me.
P.s.
I live in the hood as well. I have left my door unlocked accidentally for 3 days once, but instead my neighbors house got robbed. Never had any trouble. I use that same spare tire argument daily
