Work issue.

OK, this really isn't a serious issue, but, I'm working as a Supervisor for a Security Company in the Flint, Michigan area, pay here isn't really all that great, but hey, its a job. I'm currently working 40 hours a week, making 11.00 an hour, holiday pay (time and a half) and 1 week paid vacation (all hourly based pay) the owner of our company is wanting Supervisors and up to move to a salary based pay, I'm not quite sure if asking for 30,000 a year, plus 2 weeks paid vacation is acceptable to ask, this would basically bump out any holiday based pay and or over time, and hes wanting us to work up to 48-50 hours a week. I don't think asking for 30k and 2 weeks paid vacation is a whole lot to ask, being I'm almost really getting screwed, more work for almost the same amount of pay I am making now.
I guess I'm asking your guys opinions, I haven't really worked Salary before, at least in the civilian world (5yrs Army)
Anyhow, leave your opinions below, or suggestions...I don't want to get screwed here.

Think of it (and present it) this way. If you work a 45 hour week at $11/hr, you make $11 x 47.5 = $522.50 (40 hrs reg and 5 hours OT at time and one half or the equivalent of 47.5 hours). This equates to $27,170 per year. Asking for $30k bumps your hourly rate to $12.14 using the same 45 hours per week. That's a 10% increase for a promotion to supervisor. That doesn't seem unreasonable to me. The extra week of vacation? You can ask for it and just might get it. Nothing you are asking for is unreasonable.

Good luck!

PS - you should do armed work. I start paying my armed guys $25/hr and most get $30-$35 from me.

Legally, he may not be able to do it.

In order to claim the supervisor overtime exemption, you must directly supervise at least 2 people and, here's the hard part, have "hire-fire" authority. The definition of hire-fire means that you are directly involved in the process or that your recommendations and suggestions are given particular weight. You also have to be making more than $455 a week.

I have been on salary for the past 21 years.

Think of it as a package, not just salary. Consider $11.00 per hour is about $20K plus OT. Now look at the entire package for 30K. Salaried employees are expected to put in OT. Assuming 50 hours per week, that's 2,500 hours per year (50 weeks). Divide 30K by 2,500 hours and you're getting $12 per hour as a supervisor. You'll get another week of paid vacation. Are there health benefits, 401K or tuition reimbursment for college? Comparing straight salary it's not much more than you currently make. The employer would have to sweeten the deal with other perks.

Is this some MI law? Never heard ofan exemption. Everyone who works for me is on salary. No one has hire/fire authority. None supervise another person.

Were going to get health benefits (obamacare -.-) no 401k or college stuff (GI Bill for me)

As a security manager for the 15 years prior to retiring, I would recommend you NOT take a salary, UNLESS you agree to the number of hours your salary covers each week! You should also ask for OT once you pass that threshold.
The biggest part of my job was keeping the OT costs down for the company. I find it hard to believe that you are armed and only making $11.00 per hour. You should look around.

Im debating on not taking the OT, sadly at the moment, its the only hope for a raise at the moment, (Ive received 3 since hiring in 2 years ago, made supervisor a year after being with my company), I am planning on agreeing at 48 hours a week, 2 doubles a week, 3, 8 hour shifts. OT will be billed separate if I go over that 48 hours a week, I am also asking for 1-2 weeks of paid vacation a year at $30,000. My next move, within the next 2-3 months is Regional Manager, in charge of the entire Michigan area, as opposed to being in charge of the Flint, Michigan area. The salary for that is approx 35,000 - 40,000 a year, 2 weeks paid vacation.

It's a federal law. However, it's not the only exemption. There is an IT exemption where if most of the work they do is with computers, they can be considered exempt. There are others.

Back in 1980 or 1981 the company I worked for in Telecommunication Business tried to make all of us supervisors and put us on a salary. They were trying to cut out our overtime. We were putting in 10 - 25 hours of OT a week. But state law requires that a supervisors had to have at least 2 workers under direct supervision. With the supervisor working X amount of hours in the office. Been a long time ago, can't remember now how many hours. They were trying to cut out our OT! Didn't work out for them, we all quit!
A week later they hired us back with raises and hired more men to cut back on all the OT we were working.
It was a young company. They were learning as they grew. At first they thought, because they were owners, they could make any rules they wanted to. Without any regard to their employees.
They found out differently.

If you are sure that you will make the jump to regional manager soon I'd say take what they offer and bide your time

It never hurts to ASK for the higher salary and two weeks vacation. If you are in good standing with the company as you say you are then the worst thing they will say is "no"....but they might say yes.

Honestly (to me) the $30,000 @ a 48 hour work week seems a little on the low end but it may be apples to oranges since Washington's minimum wage is $9.04 an hour and going up again in January.

Just keep in mind that you will probably always put in more hours than you expected to. That is the reason for putting you on salary.
