NOT moving to Baltimore! At about 1:50 the detective spouts his wonderful advice to crime victims. Not said is that he is admitting that the police can't help you.
POLICE ARE REMINDING FOLKS IN ALL AREAS OF THE CITY TO WALK IN GROUPS AND WELL LIT AREAS. WE NEVER ENCOURAGE ANYONE TO FIGHT BACK. WHILE YOU ARE DOING THAT, TRY TO GET THE BEST DESCRIPTION POSSIBLE.

Let's see there is a song that states.
"Free advice is worth the price you paid"

I'm retired LEO, and my advice don't take advice for LEO....See Judge or Attorney and keep in mind they can and often are wrong!
Unfortunately, we see the laws can be interpreted differently by different people....

I won't "fight back," I'll return fire!
Keep in mind that if you fight back in the State of Maryland without a license to carry (WHICH is never granted) to the ordinary law abiding citizen. You'll be arrested and charged. Even if you killed a know felon.

The only thing they really have in Baltimore that's worth mentioning is the crabs. BUT heck, there usually imported from FLA or SC. They have defiled the Chesapeake so bad over the years that you almost can't get Bay crabs or a peaceful time in that area.

I lived there for a while in the military... I'll never go back. My post was meant it a more lighthearted, non-serious manner, but you're right... someone might take me seriously without learning the legal aspect.

Any time it comes up in conversation, I like to remind folks that that the police are there to protect the community, not individuals. They are not body guards. They will come and process paperwork on behalf of individuals who fail to protect themselves.

Was in Annapolis in the early nineties. Miss the blue crab and crab cakes. Don't miss the area one bit.

The loop around Baltimore was an eyesore; malt liquor billboards were everywhere.

Used to commute to Camden Yards to watch the Orioles. Always parked in a garage, and kept a baseball bat, just in case.

Yes, officer, one of the baseball players signed this bat for me...see? I bet I could hit a home run with it!

Everyone should memorize:
  1. Police have virtually no legal duty to protect individuals.
  2. Police have virtually no legal liability when they fail to protect individuals.
  3. Police have virtually no physical ability to protect individuals.
Police don't protect individuals; they draw chalk outlines around individuals who don't protect THEMSELVES.

When your life and limb are in danger RIGHT NOW, you're either going to protect YOURSELF or you're just not going to get protected AT ALL.

Anybody who tells you different is a LIAR.

Not sure what protect the community means...kinda like the way they protected the community in Santa Barbara recently? Cops protect no one except themselves when someone charges after them with a deadly weapon...unlike the folks in Maryland that do not have that option. I guess a few unarmed civilians lying in a pool of blood is a small price to pay to keep "the community protected" . Excuse me if I sound a bit arrogant...it was intended.

I think what he meant is that they make the community safer by stopping those pesky speeders, or by their presence possibly being a deterrent to crime. I say this with thick sarcasm, but I think the LEO's believe this.

re: ",,, WE NEVER ENCOURAGE ANYONE TO FIGHT BACK ..."
Can you imagine the reaction of men in the 1850s and even later, if any form of government, local or otherwise, spoke to the People like this?
This is the mentality of big city folks, whom I don't despise, rather pity; locked in a box of dependency for everything upon inept city government, in denial, yet arrogant enough to display a facade of confidence and control. At some point, men became mice, abandoned their innate responsibility to, not only family but community, and handed everything over to government. Sure, some will come up with particular historical events which made the transition seem logical - but face it, when you farm out responsibility to government you invite its dominion over you.

Oh sure.....Don't fight back, always be a passive victim and throw yourself on the mercy of your attacker. No thanks, I'd rather take my chances with the legal system.
