Women and open carry

My name is Andreina Cordani, I'm a journalist based in London working on an article for a glossy women's magazine about guns from a female perspective.

The stereotype is that only guys are into guns, but I'm rapidly learning that there's a huge community of gun-carrying women out there. Seeing recent coverage of open carry meets in Starbucks, I was wondering if some of you would like to talk to me about where, why and how you carry.

I'd really like to talk to smart, aspirational and eloquent young women who can tell me about what a difference gun carrying makes to their lives, in terms of self-protection, empowerment and feeling secure. I want to address some of the misconceptions, and get a real honest viewpoint of how guns fit into women's lives.

Hi, I understand your caution about journalists, but would like to reassure you.

I'm not working for Glamor but UK Marie Claire. It doesn't have any political affiliations or any agenda, just a host of readers who are interested in finding out about how people live in different parts of the world.

When I told my UK girlfriends about the Open Carry campaign they were all fascinated. Yhey asked me sensible questions like 'do they need training?' 'Does it help them feel safe' and silly girly questions like 'do people carry on dates?' and 'doesn't it ruin their outfits?' I just want to find out about how guns fit into the lifestyle of the average woman.

I'm not looking to reinforce any stereotypes, in fact I want to overturn some preconceptions that people may have about the pro-gun lobby, and I think the best way of doing that is to let women speak in their own voices about why the right to bear arms is important to them.

I'm happy to work with people to get their message across, and have no intention of misrepresenting anyone.

If anyone would like to find out more about it I'm happy to talk it through in an informal chat. If it's not for you, no problem!

So far I've found all the gun folks I've spoken to to be really warm and friendly and eager to get their message out there. All I can say is that if anyone IS interested but a bit wary, I'm happy to answer any questions they may have off the record - ie, before they commit to being interviewed.

Through past experience, I've learned when dealing with journalists, that nothing is ever "off the record".

I'm all for getting the word out, it's the spinning and twisting of stories and words by the journalists that I'm not very fond of.

I see both sides of this... I'd like to get the word out, but journalists have more often that not, skewed the "word" that they end up printing. It would really be nice to arrange a "middle ground" that would allow for trust to build, and accuracy in print to be expected, and delivered...

I'll see if perhaps a middle ground can be created. I've taught firearms for many years, and will chat with both Andreina, and several of the ladies who have been thru my classes and currently carry firearms on a daily basis, and see if there's a way to get everyone together....

We all have an interest in this, and have no problem in trying to figure out a beneficial solution. We'll see how it goes....

Yup, it's true, handguns are pretty much banned in the UK and although a lot of the cops would love to carry, it's not really on the government agenda.

By the way: only people in Sherlock Holmes movies say Bobbies these days - my favourite UK police nickname is The Fuzz. In some parts of the country they're also called The Rozzers or The Bizzies. No idea why! leasantry:
