A local store is selling Wolf 5.56 ammo. I know most people don't like Wolf ammo for handguns because it is usually dirty, but how is it in rifles? Still dirty and stay away from?
My sks eats it for breakfast in 7.62x39 and previous poster is right on one thing, it does stink to high heaven. I can't attest to any wolf in 5.56 but I do know that I have had very few problems with what I have shot. I shoot wolf and remington with very little else.
I use wolf 9mm in my g19 for target practice. Never had a problem. My sks eats it for diner, its a piston operated gun. I heard m4/m15 have muck up problems becaus the ammo is part dirt lol. The non piston m4 ar's are finiky....
Some people have had stoppages in AR type weapons due to the steel case not sealing the breech correctly. This allows a carbon buildup in the chamber which cause rounds to stick.
WOW! I have been useing it in my ar's ( dpms,rem-15,colt h-bar) never had a issue!! My sub gun m-11 with lage upper. Browning hi powers (3 of them). And of course the sks's and ak 47's. And I have never had any problems. I will keep buying it
I have an AR and have used several hundred rds. I did have one issue with a failure to extract but pretty much figured out that my AR had a problem w/ the BCG's extractor spring. It is very stinky, dirty Russian ammo but shouldn't you be cleaning your rifle anyway after every trip to the range? I think I get Wolf 5.56 for around $5.75/20 at the local shop here. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but isn't TulAmmo the same stuff as Wolf now? The gun shop guy here said the two companys are the same?
I use Wolf in my AKs with no problem. They'll eat anything. I buy it in bulk and get it for around $4.60/box when all is said and done. I choose not to use it in my other weapons. There are plenty of other good, inexpensive 5.56/.223 choices out there.
My Bushmaster Patrolman's Carbine will not run with Wolf. That is the only ammo it doesn't like. I have tried Wolf in my Mini 30, it doesn't like it either. After some research I learned that the Mini 30 chamber is cut to a different spec so the steel cases give it fits. Any brass cased ammo shoots just fine in it. I have tried Wolf in some pistol calibers and never had issues other than not wanting to be down wind.
I have used Wolf in 7.62x39 and .223/5.45 in my SKS, Mini-30, and Saiga .223. The only problem is hard russian primers. That is probably a defense against slam fire in the SKS. I have never had an issue with Wolf. The sticking issue in ARs is probably the carbon build up mentioned earlier, but would most likely occur when using softer brass (foreign surplus) after firing many dirty steel case rounds. They now have a Gold Line that is not bad at all in 7.62x54r.
The only gun I buy steel case ammo for is my AK74, I currently buy only TulAmmo. I used Wolf before... most of the rounds fed and fired, and extracted fine. But, then I had one failure to extract... had to literally kick the bolt open with my boot. That was it, I will never buy Wolf steel case again. It's a mental thing.
And then, many guns DO NOT like steel case in general. Some actually advise against it. I tried using steel case in my M1 Carbine and it hated it, using brass it fires like a dream.
Advice, if you're going to get steel case... Try TulAmmo. I think they do something when packaging it in those Wolf boxes, lol. It just didn't work for me.
It has always worked fine in my sks. I caution everyone one using it in a 9mm. I purchased a box for my keltec p11 for practice. When I tried to chamber the first round(and several others later), the slide would not close. I later checked the overall length of the cartridge and discovered that the wolf 9mm was longer than its American made counterpart. The tip of the bullet was actually going up into the rifling. Russian quality control is sometimes wanting. I have ran into this with other foreign made 9mm. It double feeds (or doesn't feed at all) through my M1 Carbine. I only use "Wolfie" in the sks now.
I tried Wolf steel case coated 5.56 thought my AR and had a lot failure to eject issues. I took the gun and ammo to a client/gunsmith and he took a look at it all. He came to the conclusion that the ammo was the problem. Mainly caused by the close tolerances of the chamber. He told me to stick with uncoated brass cased ammo.
We took the Wolf stuff I was having problems with and fed it through a full auto HK without a hickup. So I guess the answer is what gun you're going to run it through.
