WND A .22 is better than a .45????

I've been sold on the benefits of the .22LR for many years and frequently carry a .22LR CC during hot days. However; my main carry is a .380. The debate is going to come down to individual preference, even in spite of any data that is available; with the arguments surrounding kinetic energy, knock down power and wound cavity.

While I choose to carry a 9mm, I agree that the .22LR is a round that is hugely underrated.

If we could all make head or brain stem shots under extreme duress, sign me up for the .22LR and pay my NFA suppressor tax o_O

With .22LR, you can easily afford to train as much as you need to to be able to make those head or brain stem shots. :)

At the end of the day, however, no one wants to be shot with a .22LR. I imagine very few criminals staring down the barrel of your handgun are going to scrutinize the bore and say "Oh, heck, he's only got a mousy .22. Whew! That's a relief!"

I'm not saying the .22 is the ideal self defense caliber, but I do contend that it's seriously underrated.

It's now on my short list....minus the suppressor :) I also have a M&P Shield 9mm on the short list!

Criminals/perps like the 22LR, just ask them, they are happy to show you all their wounds, makes for good jailhouse time passing from what I've heard. Lots of gang members like the 22LR, small ILL-legally concealed weapons seem to be their weapons of choice. They also like rifles like the Ruger 10-22 decked out in tac gear, and of course, ammo is cheap, they do practice a lot.

I have a Taurus PT-22, nice small little gun, has performed excellently since day one, easy to shoot, cheap to shoot, I carry it often when doing farm chores and in hot weather. I prefer to carry my XDm nore often than not, but the PT-22 is easy to conceal, just pocket and go. I tend to target practice more using my smaller caliber guns, but I also do some target practicing with larger calibers just to keep up skills with them.

I agree with ihsv, the 22LR is seriously underrated.

Bill Jordan in his book "No Second Place Winner" wrote; Be first or be dead...there is no second place winner in a gunfight.
So if you are going to work hard to be first, it has to do the job.

I have to say that while 22lr's are fun to shoot they are not always your best for stopping someone I personally know 2 people who was shot with22lr's and survived. One was shot point blank in the face 5 times and the other 8 times throught the body so I love and stick with my 40 s&s

40gr .22lr vs 230gr .45ACP The hole from the .22 is about the size of the .45's hole that makes it a hollow point. While I wouldn't want to take a .22 round to the eye, I would hate even worse to take a .45 ACP JHP round there.

A .22lr is a favorite for hitmen. A well placed shot behind the ear has been used to dispatch many a victim. It tends to ricochet and cause more damage.

Personally, I use 9mm, but I don't think you can discount something that you can load up with 20 good rounds for 75 cents, and unload very quickly in a very small group. With the price of .22, you can practice for a month on what it would cost for 1 day of practice with a lot of larger calibers. That extra 29 days of practice could very easily make up for the difference in wound cavity. Especially if you practice high stress drills. And they're plenty accurate. Last time I was up to my uncle's farm, I was plinking a 5" plate at about 60-70 yards with his Ruger target pistol with iron sights, and I'm certainly no expert marksman.

My two cents...it is all about first shot hits and delivered energy

IE a JHP .45 ACP a JHP .40 S&W or a +P JHP 9MM all dump literally a ton of energy on impact. Many rounds have a better than 90% chance of a 1 shot stop.

A .22LR not a man stopper.

How many crackheads have you shot?

Since I retired from a major department I have, and seen some......How about you?

All the shootings I've witnessed or had to manage afterwards, the one that was shot just crumpled up (or ran a little bit ways before falling). You have actually spun someone around?
