I'm thinking about upgrading my operating system......Any thoughts?

I love it. I don't know if you actually need to wait any longer for manufacturers, but do know that things like a multitouch mouse or touch screen will provide a much better experience. It is fast and beautiful and very different. Remember if you can't find something just start typing while on the start screen!

Agreed. Don't even mess with it until you have a multitouch mouse or touch screen. Personally, as a computer tech, I'm not liking this one much even though I loaded it on an old laptop just to play with and learn.

Whatever you do, don't move to MS Office 2013, or at least don't delete your earlier office products if you do install 2013. The interface reminds me of the way Word and WordPerfect looked back in the days of dos. You get a choice of three colors - white, light gray, medium gray. It hurts the eyes and is difficult to discern things. I gave up on it after 2 days.

Going from the colorful desktop screen of Win 8 to an Office 2013 product is a real shock. A typical first look goes like this: "Look at at all those colors on the desktop! Start Word 2013, let's see what it looks like. Oh..uh....is your monitor broken?"

As a computer nerd I don't like Windows 8 either. If I wanted my workstation to look like a smartphone then yes. I beta tested Win8 and it left a bad taste in my mouth. Yes, it boots a full 15 seconds faster than Win7 but who cares. If someone is lacking computer skills or this is their first computer and they don't know any better they may like it. If however you are like me and have been using Win 3.0 which was run from the DOS prompt then you probably won't like it. Way to many changes to cope with. Why Microsoft decided to throw billions of users under the bus and force them to learn a new way of doing things is crazy IMHO. Yes, smartphones and tablets are neat and they do have their place in the market but they are limited in their abilities and were never meant for serious work unless someone considers playing Angry Birds work. As for me I will be using Win 7 for probably the next 10 years.

I flirted with upgrading my laptop to windows 8 and decided not to after having time to play with it a littel on my sons laptop. Didn't like it at all.

I went ahead and d/l it onto my desktop. I have not installed it yet..Wanted to get it while I still could for 14.99

Make sure you create an image of your current OS because once you install it you can't go back. That way if you don't like it you can restore the image of your old OS and you are back to where you started. 14.99 is a good price though.
