Wife was not a gun person for years. But she became disabled, and the world is getting scarier, so one Christmas she asked for a revolver and a shotgun. Surprised me, but I thought it was great. I already had a shotgun and a pistol, so why not. We took CCWP classes together, including range time. Instructor even helped her learn to fire from her scooter. We go to the range and practice now and then.
A few days ago I heard barking (our Australian Shepherd), and yelling, from livingroom. Seems a big bear had taken screen off diningroom window and climbed in! Not knowing what was happening, I grabbed my shotgun and headed to livingroom. My wife had her 357 cocked and aimed at bear. If it had come closer, she was ready to fire. I chased bear back outside, and all was well.
My wife said that the guns paid for themselves that day. Instead of terror, she was MAD at the bear. How DARE he (or she?) break into our house (yes we live very rural).
My point is, you never know what will happen, and if you will ever need a weapon, but if you have one when you need it, the odds slide to your favor.
Also I had to brag about wife ready to shoot the bear, and MAD, not really afraid.
