To put it simply...there's alot of fringe, borderline and outright lunatics that are really easy to lampoon and have tainted everyone else. Same thing happened to the Tea Party. Plenty of good people and good ideas, and then you get some nitwits that get air time, and suddenly, they're universally disliked.

Well, first of all the Preppers that are jumping on the "put me on TV" band wagon aren't the best representation of who and what preppers are all about, and they don't help the cause (even though they all think they are furthering understanding). They manage to pick the fringiest of all the preppers and thus paint a picture of a group of loons stock piling supplies for some idiotic reason.

The public still think that somehow, our illustrious government will manage to prevent all that could go wrong and they will continue to live in the current utopia they now occupy. The general public see the "odd" preparations and still don't understand just how much the average prepper has done with limited resources available to the individual, All they see is a bunch of people stocking rusty cans of corn so when the world comes to an end they can shut the gate and chow down.
