I am sick to my stomach. And outraged. It is hard to focus on the fact that we shouldn't stereotype these criminals. Nonetheless someone needs to address this problem or racial violence is going to tear this nation apart. Some people will get fed up with this and take matters into their own hands. That causes me concern because the likely victims of that brand of justice are likely to be as innocent as the young couple in this article. The system needs to punish all equally to regain our confidence. A few years ago I was thinking that we were well on the road to becoming color blind, in a good way. WOW, talk about stupid. I am a self admitted idiot.
Black on white crime is par for the course, as is black on black crime. There's nothing remarkable about that; it is an accepted fact of life. According to FBI's expanded UCR reports, blacks are 39 times more likely to commit a crime against whites than whites against blacks. 45% of crimes committed by blacks are against whites, and 43% are against other blacks. That's exactly what makes white on black crime so remarkable and sensational when it happens - it is statistically quite rare, so this isn't about stereotyping. The facts establish the reality of the perception.

As I have posted before, the problem of race violence will not end until the black community acknowledges their own role in the breakdown of the social structures within the black community. To this day, blacks are complicit in their own demise. Not because of white oppression, not because of a lack of programs, but because they are still playing out the enemy village scenario that typified (and still does) life in Africa. Rival gangs killing each other, gangbangers killing innocent bystanders, black drug dealers, pimps, loansharks, you name it - blacks are still being enslaved by their own; and any African-American who has the guts to break that mold is instantly classified as an Uncle Tom, an Oreo, or some other derogatory term. We have more social, educational, and financial programs than any other country in the world, many of which were created with the African-American community in mind. Obama even wrote an executive order specifically directed at African-American students, telling schools that they cannot hold African-American students to the same behavioral expectation as are normal for all other ethnic groups (

It begins when they renounce the enemy village paradigm in favor of recognizing their shared needs. It begins when successful black professionals recognize and act on their obligation to reinvest in their communities, both financially and monetarily. It begins by finally coming to terms with the fact that, while blacks were brought to this country under terrible conditions (as were the Chinese - they were brought here as slave labor for the railroads and Alaskan canneries), until they take responsibility for the breakdown of their own social structures, no amount of programs are going to change the dynamics of their communities. The rest of us can do what we can to help, when help is wanted, but we can't do for them the things that they should be doing for themselves.
