where can i find mi laws regarding CWPs

is there anywhere i can find MI laws regarding CWPs. i plan on taking a class next fall but just want to gather information for now. i have a lot of guns and work for the post office. i would like to be armed anytime i can be strictly according to law. i used to delivery food for a restaurant. some crazy things happen when dealing with drunks. i read an article a pizza delivery guy almost got robbed at gunpoint in detroit but he had a CWP and shot the robber dead. i thought that was awesome. i mean i dont wish death upon anyone but anyone in that situation should be able to defend themself. even if it means deadly force.

With all due respect, use this forum and Defensive Carry Forum for all you could ever want to know about firearm and CWP rules, regs and law. Use the search engines or the upfront wording on the home pages that clearly show you the way as your vehicle for finding out more than you even want to know.

Go to Michigan.government/msp/0,1607,7-123-1591_3503_4654-10929--,00.HTML. that's where I went to find out I have it saved

While there is a lot of info on this site please do not rely on just one source for your legal information. Also, while asking questions is a very good thing, please do NOT ... NOT EVER... take anyone's word for what the law says.... ALWAYS search the actual laws on the Michigan Legislature website here:

Michigan Legislature - Home

to find the law itself.

Another website that is filled with folks who have a very good understanding of Michigan gun laws and can answer your questions is OpenCarry.org:

I'd like to emphasize something very important... please do NOT open carry until you understand the laws because one little screw up can put you in prison.

An example of a little screw up in Michigan....

Open carry without any permit is legal in Michigan. But to legally possess a pistol in a vehicle the pistol MUST be in a case in the trunk (if the vehicle has a trunk it must be in the trunk) or inaccessible to people in the vehicle. So folks without a permit can transport their pistol, in a case, in their vehicle, to where they want to open carry. Then they must take the pistol out of the case, load it, and holster it. And when they are done open carrying they must unholster, unload, and put the pistol back in the case.

And here is where the screw up comes because the tendency is to try to not alarm anyone by hiding the process by keeping the pistol out of sight still inside the car or still inside the trunk ... but without a carry permit it is illegal to take the pistol out of the case/put it back in the case... while the case/pistol is still inside the car.

And just by trying to not alarm folks equals a little screw up that can put a person in prison.

Oh yeah... if after following the process perfectly but then leaning back into the car to get something and the gun breaks that line from outside to inside........... yep, you guessed it.... without a permit that is illegal.

But all of that does not apply to someone who has a carry permit.
