When the criminal's "element of surprise" is...more surprising

Investigators say it happened May 21 during a street robbery in the Third Precinct. The Minneapolis Police Facebook Page reports that the victim, an adult male, was walking home near 31st Street East and 3rd Avenue South when a man walking the other way suddenly slammed him into a parked car.

The victim told officers that hitting the car injured his arm and he was unable to defend himself. As the suspect, 34-year-old Willie Merriweather, searched the man he found the pistol, held it to the victim's head and demanded the rest of his valuables. The man lost his gun and wallet in the robbery.

Remember that game as a kid, "I got your nose!" This was, "SURPRISE! I got your gun!"

Situational awareness will always prevent more crime than the element of surprise.

hopefully he got his wallet and gun back when they got the suspect?

''Situational awareness will always prevent more crime than the element of surprise.''
very true i think so

Wow what an idiot I guess his situational awareness kinda sucks guess he should invest in some pepper spray or maybe a rape whistle till he gets his gun back and some training

How is he an idiot?
You think you could never be taken off guard?
Think again.

I won't say 'Never" but I ride a motorcycle which means I live w/ my head on a pivot and I worked for about a year in a group home where taking your eyes off a kid could get you a diner plate in the head.

Long story short, you'd have to be having a really good day

I can guarantee you I could take you out quicker than you could blink.
It's called a sucker punch to the face backed by 205lbs of muscle.
It's effective even against someone weighing significantly more than you.
This is a tactic used more and more by thugs because it is extremely effective and extremely difficult
to always know who might deliver it and when.
Those who use this tactic are very good at hiding the fact that they intend to do so until the moment of delivery.
Unless you clear a 6ft or greater defensive perimeter around you and never let anyone inside that circle,
you can be a victim faster than diarrhea can clear your colon.

There is a difference between being prepared and armed and being an victim with a gun. So much for all that tactical advantage of surprise bs the anti OC crowd is always spouting about.

"Owning a handgun doesn't make you armed any more than owning a guitar makes you a musician"
- Col. Cooper

If someone wants to take you out, you will be taken out! It matter's not that you are aware of impending threat or not. You are vunrerable at some point.

I didn't say it was impossible tough guy I you'd have to be having a really good day. BTW I used to box, I've been hit, I know what it feels like and I've only ever had one guy that actually made me see stars.

In order for that to be true wouldn't you have to know how much I weigh?

Agreed

Partially agreed

Like I said I never said never , I said you'd be having a real good day.

I grew up in a very abusive home which is yet one more really good way to learn real world situational awareness. Long story short, I have been conditioned by my environment to view anyone approaching me as a threat. I never said I couldn't get my ass whooped but you are not going to sneak up on me

EDIT: FWIW I have been sucker punched at least four times in my life. None of the attackers were able to knock me off my feet and in all four cases I was still in the fight after the punch /EDIT

I agree with SGB, this man was CCing, if he'd been OCing this might not of happened.

That's why I open carry... a visible gun at least gives the criminal the choice, if they see it, to simply move on - which most criminals looking for an easy target will do, although I fully admit that not all criminals will move on, just most. A hidden gun cannot offer that choice to the criminal, making the potential victim appear to be just another potential victim like the rest of the 99.5% of the population.

hiding my gun could be a surprise element that may save my life
in my situation, being elderly and female, i would think it might entice a crook to want to steal my gun if i open carried it
younger and stronger men may do better at times open carrying but that's their choice if it works for them

And that certainly is a valid consideration. Everyone needs to make their own choices. There are some (obviously not you), however, that have a prejudice against open carry and they will further myths with no basis in reality in an attempt to justify and gain support for their prejudice.

yup it don't matter to me how others carry their guns. it's none of my business, so long they not aiming it at me or other innocent persons

With a hearing impairment I might not know when someone comes at me from behind. That's why I usually carry a backup...and why I prefer to sit with my back to the wall.

I seem to remember several stories about cops having their weapon taken away. OC may attract some and deter others. The gun does not prevent 100% of crime any more than seat belts prevent 100% of accidents it just improves your odds of surviving. Choose whether or not to carry. Choose what to carry. Choose how to carry. Roll your own dice.

I sit with My back to the wall as well. I have no impairments, but would rather have someone I know in front of Me than someone I don't behind Me.

The only stories I have ever seen about cops getting their guns taken away were during struggles when the officer was attempting to arrest a criminal and the criminal was attempting to escape. An entirely different situation than Joe Citizen carrying a gun for self defense. I have never seen a story of a criminal simply attempting to steal a gun worn by a police officer.
