So, my wife is deathly afraid of guns. (BAD experience when she was young) and when I come home, she asks me to stow my gun before relaxing. She prefers me to stow it on my closet shelf. (it's better, about 8 years ago she wanted me to keep it in a safe).

The other night, our double bedroom doors opened at 4am, it turned out to be our cat, but it woke us both up and scared her, I told her as I got out of bed to check on it. "this is why my gun should be on my bedstand not the top shelf of the closet. Our house is secure, we live in a good neighborhood, have security doors, etc, but I know if we ever had a home invasion (God forbid) I will have to tell the BG - "please wait while I get my gun from the other room".

Anyway, the title of this thread and point is:

When you are not carrying on your person, where do you store your gun?
 
Mine definitely stays at the side of my bed at night. "battle rifle" is in a fingerprint safe in the next room. but I always keep my handgun at my bedside.
 
Well? When the pistol (1911) is not on my person. It is in a holster mounted under the table near the front door. I have a seperate gun (glock 23, lazer, light) that never leaves the bed side. I have a 15 year old at home. 3 others flew the coup already. Never ever had a issue with kids and guns.
 
At home my guns are stored in my safe, except for whatever I'm using for home protection. That weapon usually sits on or next to my night stand.

If I'm out and about and go somewhere firearms aren't permitted my CC goes in my Autosafe that's mounted in my center console. It's a small one and can't hold anything larger than a subcompact (my LCP or HK P2000SK) but it's been "battle tested" so to speak. Earlier this year it resisted all the efforts of a thief to break into it.
 
My carry gun is on my person from the time I get dressed (safest place to have a gun is under your direct personal control)until I get undressed for the night at that time it goes on my night table.

100% of home invasions happen in a home

......within arms reach, except when I'm in the shower. My wife sometimes scowls or rolls her eyes when she sees it on my hip at all hours, but I don't care. I just start to say "What if........" and she says, "I know, I know......"

With all due respect, I don't think you're asking the right question for your situation. I'm pretty sure the question you mean to ask is, "Where do you keep a gun in the house will satisfy a hoplophobe's unreasonable fear of an inanimate object?" Because I'm sure that the answer you'll get from most people still won't meet her requirements. I'll tell you how we do it in our home and see how it works for you.

First off, most of the time, most of our guns are locked up in one of our three gun safes whether we are home or not. It's a matter of numbers. If they weren't, we wouldn't be able to move safely around the house due to the clutter.

So when we are home, each of us either carries (most often me) or has close at hand (most often my wife) a defensive handgun. That means a gun could be sitting on a coffee table, kitchen counter, nightstand or wherever we may be at doing whatever we may be doing. Also, we both always have a home defense shotgun at the ready, usually in the master bedroom at the side of the bed. There may be other guns out and about in the house 'just because'. Additionally, we have a "goin' out to the barn" shotgun for when we go out to the barn or looking for a dog in the woods. But that's getting a bit off topic.

When we have company with kids come over, this gets pared down to one defensive handgun on my hip and one defensive shotgun that is well hidden and up high, but that all adults in the house know where it's at just in case someone starts getting nosey or in case of emergency.

So, how do you think that'll work out for your wife?


P.S. I forgot to mention that when I say I carry in and around the house, that means open carry. I'm pretty sure she'd like that. Right?
 
I live in the country...we had to call an ambulance a few years back and it 25 minutes to get here. Had it been more serious, my 1-1/2 year old son could have died, but everything worked out ok.

If we have an intruder, it will be our responsibility to take care of ourselves before the police could ever get here. With young kids in the house, I have my guns locked up all the time or on my person.

I carry a very small Kel-Tec .380 p3at and you almost don't even notice it is holstered in your pocket. At night I clip my holstered gun to the cloth handle on our mattress. Perfect placement (within 12 of my hand) & the sheet goes over the top to conceal it. When I get up I put it away until I'm dresses & then it is in either a front pocket holster or a wallet holster.

My kids all know about guns and never to touch them without me. We have tried to get the curiosity out of the way be educating them about gun safety at a young age and practicing what we preach.
 
I usually have 2 guns on my person at all times--P3at in the pocket and carry gun of choice.When I sleep--both pistols on the nightstand and shotgun a few feet away.
My primary CC gun is not always on my hip at home but always within easy reach.
The P3at is always in my pocket except when I'm sleeping.
When showering the P3at goes into a plastic bag on a small shelf next to the shower and the alarm is turned on

I respect your decision, and all the other choices of placement of their weapon while at home.

My situation, like each of yours, is personal. I do my best to protect my home, by having motion lights surrounding the exterior, as well as camera's and a system, and steel security doors, I feel safe at home.

The two most important aspects of my life are God and Family. I MUST respect both.

As I am sure you each respect yours, my wife had a gun in her face by an ex-boyfriend and that scared her for all these years of guns. I have come a long way from the day's of keeping it in a safe, and I am ok keeping in in the closet, It's more important to me to show respect for my love, my wife, than anything else. I live my life as close to the Bible as I can, and respecting her fears and wishes is important to me. If my dog barks (which he does if anyone comes NEAR our home, I get the gun, if my security lights go off, I get my gun and check the camera's.

And don't even say she doesn't respect me for asking me to keep it in the closet, if you have a wife who had a gun shoved in her face (point blank against the forehead) then you can say something, but even then, don't judge her feelings/fears. She did agree to go to the range with me by spring so I say- baby steps, baby steps.

I actually have terrible gun placement in my house. My CC gun kind of falls where my pants do when I take them off. Under my bed I have a one of those $10 gun cases from walmart where you can cut out the bottom to make a secure fit, that's where my guns are stored. We have no kids in the house so I don't feel the need to lock up my guns. On average there is a gun within 10 feet from me.
 
If I have my pants on I have my CC, when in shower Gun is covered with cloths, when in bed my Gun is on night stand (no Holster) my girlfriends Gun is on her side under mattress. There is a MD36 Smith in a Kitchen Drawer, a Mossberg PGO hangs on a door knob between me in the Den and the front Door. Long Guns and SKS are locked to a cable in their stowage location. There are other Guns in various Drawers. There are no Kids in this House. If company is coming and they have Kids I move all Guns (except the ones that I carry) to the master Bed room and lock the Door. I changer the door to a steel outside door and good locks.

Part of getting dressed is putting the gun and permit on. If heading to a pistol free zone, I have a safe in the car.

When undressed, gun is within arms reach in the nightstand.

If I am away from home and have more guns than I can travel with on my person, "extra" guns goto the vault. Don't want to be party to spoon-feeding the BGs weapons...

Tell your wife that if the bad guys would start making appointments with you, then you will start keeping the gun handy "only when you need it." Until you KNOW when a BG will strike, it's "best of have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it."

My gun goes on my person after a shower. While in the shower it is at the wifes vanity at arms reach. then it goes on my MOB IWB Galco and it will ride with me until I go to bed.

at that time it goes on its holster buddy that hangs from my bed on my side.

the rest are on the safe ready as a backup.

with the red button for the auto destruct button that is wired to the C4..

ok ok that last line was a joke...!:sarcastic:
 
Loaded 870 under my bed........Glock 19 on bedside "unless wearing it that day" and my LCP is usually on me or on my office desk if not.
 
I have one gun, a G26. When it's not on my hip, it is with me where ever we may be in the house. On the side table while watching TV, on the counter while in the kitchen, on the night stand while in bed. But is usually on my hip from the time I pull on my pants till the time I go to bed.
