First off I would like to say this is a great forum with a lot of info.I own a Beretta PX-4 Storm 9mm,Springfield Armory Xd sub compact 9mm& I just put some money down on a Kahr Pm9.
I just registered here and I have a few questions.
What would you think a reasonable amount of time would be to wait to try to get the restrictions lifted from my permit (hunting & target shooting restriction) and also what would be an acceptable reason for wanting to do so.I dont think saying self defense would cut it with the judge.
Ive had my permit for about a year and have never been arrested or had any other problems with the law & my permit only took less than a month to get believe it or not.Oh yeah,Im in Albany county. Thanks everyone.

You need some sort of reason to get the restriction lifted, such as carrying large amounts of money, living in a dangerous area, etc. My wife got her restrictions removed because she worked the night shift and had to walk in an unlighted parking lot.. May not work in your county.

Having said that, NY supreme court has ruled that a permit is legal to carry with or without restrictions. You do not violate penal code by carrying with restrictions. You may offend the issuing judge and he will pull your permit, but you have not done a criminal act.

JimPage is correct. It is not a criminal act. It's a violation of Article 400. He could revoke the permit or give you a break and just suspend you for a while.

A good way to lift the restrictions is to take an NRA PPITH and NRA PPOTH course prior to filing the amendment. Have your instructor test you and issue a letter of qualification. You might also consider becoming a certified pistol instructor. A combination of these things shows the judge you have taken the time to understand the law and learn proper methods of concealed carry and defense. That, combined with the fact that you may be teaching in a variety of venues is usually a winner. Also advise the judge it is not your intent to carry on a regular basis. When you earn his trust he'll be more inclined to grant it.

What county are we talking about? Some of the upstate and western counties have tough judges. The Hudson valley is more lenient.

Well I am going to wait until the 2yr mark from when I got my permit to try to get the restrictions lifted & I have looked into firearm safety courses in my area.I think I will be able to get them lifted since the judge signed off on my permit in only 2 wks & never called any of my references.I think me being 40 yrs old & having a clean record might help also(agreed?).
My county is Albany

Here in Dutchess county the wait for the APPOINTMENT TO SUBMIT a permit is somewhere around 7 months now!
When I got mine many years ago it took 4 to 6 weeks to be approved!

I had my restriction removed when I was working a night shift at a gas station, and had to take a NRA basic handgun safety course.

I have since retaken the course because Maine wouldn't accept it if it was over 5 years old for a non res permit.
Maine app will be in the mail soon,Ct abd Pa are in my pocket now.
Pa is an easy one,Ct wasn't too bad either.
I wanted those 2 first due to living close enough to either border to possibly cross the line on any given day.
I travel to Maine regularly so wanted that one just in case!
All I have to do is hyper space across Mass!
