I've always loved the "Cooper Assault", probably because I was very good at it right from the start. I first saw/shot it in 1976. I won that day, in what later was a "strong hand only" sort of time, 26 seconds. I later got it down to 19 seconds (for good runs). With a double stack mag, I could crack 18 seconds pretty regularly. The average guy needs 30 seconds or more. :-)

Shooter stands in the 'surrender starting position, facing 2 torsos, 15 yds away, one on each end of an 8ft long wall, 6 ft high, with a 2" wide step at 6ft from the ground. Upon signal, shooter draws, hits each target twice, reloads, (1911 single stack .45) reholsters, advances the 15 yds, and gets over the wall.

At that point, he faces 2 more torsos, one on each end of a "tunnel" made of 2x4's on edge. The tunnel is 8 ft wide, with 18" of bottom- clearance, 6 boards, 18" between each board. Shooter can draw in midair if he wishes. Range to the torsos is 10 yds. He hits each torso twice, reholsters, gets thru the tunnel, and upon doing so, crosses the "weak line". All further gun handling must be done weak hand only. Upon exiting the tunnel, shooter must move 2 yds to a wall with a window in it. This window is 18" square, at a height to require that shooting be done from the kneeling position. The shooter must (weak hand only) draw, and fire thru the window.

7 yds beyond the window is another torso and a 12" stop disk, 10 ft apart. Shooter must hit the torso twice and then the plate. Shooter can move only one step while touching his gun or holster. The penalty for an offense is 5 seconds per step. Also, a 5 second penalty is assessed for dislodging each/any board of the tunnel. These procedural errors mess up many a good run! :-)

The course is run twice. As Jeff originally designed it, this match is not scored or run with Comstock Count. All shooters who get all 20 hits on paper beat all who have only 19 hits, regardless of the time taken. So you MUST take the time to get all hits. Center hits score no better than fringe hits, too, in the original version. Fastest shooter with all hits, both runs, is the winner.

If the shooter drops his gun, from his hand or from the rig, he is DQ'd, disqualified. If you choose to try this match, make CERTAIN that your barricade is SOLIDLY staked down! Shooters hit that wall HARD, so as to get over it with momentum. A rather nice "wrinkle" is to mount a 2x4 with its bottom 24" above the top of the wall, forcing shooters to "roll" their bodies over the wall in a low, cover-using sort of movement. Many holsters and mag pouches will lose their cargo in this sort of violent movement. Many a shooter will unconsciosly hold his gun in the rig with his forearm as he runs, too. :-) This match is a real crowdpleaser, but only astute gunhandlers can be shown to the public.

Sounds fun but I'm afraid I'd break every bone in my body clearing the walls and wacking walls. Sigh, gittin olde ain't fer sissies.

I have slowed down to 24 seconds, for consistent hits, single stack 1911. I can't just "wish" my body over the wall anymore, nor simply DIVE thru the tunnel, nor jump up from the tunnel and land with the gun drawn, (weak hand) anymore. I'm 61, and yes, it does sort of "inhale". :-)
