What's the optiumum CCW license solution to cover the most States?

So I've read for many years that FL and UT are the CCW permits to get. I've looked at the maps and indeed, they do cover a good swath of States.

My question is, has anyone come up with the "recipe" to get the most number of states with the fewest number of permits? Can you get 45 of the 50 States with only 4 licenses? Has anyone done the math and built the Strategy?

Check out Arizona as well. With my resident Alabama permit and non-resident Arizona, I think I'm good in 37 states. Arizona's covers most of those.

California, Urah, Arizona, and Oregon pretty much covers my travels except when I go to Colorado. I wish they would honor my California but no such luck.

Agreed. The "holy grail" permits are Arizona, Utah, and Florida (recognizing that there is significant overlap between the 3.)

The rest depend on what state in which you reside.

For myself, I would need the following permits to get as many states as possible:

Massachusetts (where I reside) - GOT IT
Utah - GOT IT
Arizona - GETTING IT

(I don't have the rest...but we're talking "in theory" so here goes)

Florida
Maine
New Hampshire
Connecticut
Rhode Island
New Jersey (fat chance, but possible in theory)
Oregon
Maryland (not likely to get, but possible in theory)
South Carolina (non resident permit only if you own property there)

If I had these 12 permits, I would be able to carry in every state except:

New York
Colorado
California
Hawaii

Oregon is only even possible to get if you are an Oregon resident or a resident of a bordering state: Washington, Idaho, Utah, or California.

If you do not live in one of those states, Oregon is completely impossible to get.

Although with luck, that will change this year. State Senator Floyd Prozanski (not my senator, but one of my favorites,) has introduced a reciprocity bill that should get decent cross-party support, as long as the committee chairman allows it in. (Yes, I'll be writing letters of support.) Not 100% reciprocity, but better than nothing. (It's a "reciprocity for states that recognize Oregon's permit, and have eligibility requirements" reciprocity.)

But, with any luck, HR 822 will go through the Senate and be passed and make it unnecessary.

Illinois, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Northern Mariana Islands and Guam would also remain off-limits to you for carry.

You are correct. Good thing I live in California. Also, good luck getting one for California unless you live here and live in one of the Counties that are pretty much Shall issue now. Like Sacramento..... :dirol:

You are correct except that Nevada borders Oregon, and not Utah.

15 years from now you will all be arguing about how I can get a permit to change from Presbyterian to Baptist that will cover worship in the most states on USAWORSHIP.ORG.

This is hilarious.

I have never been able to figure out how and why some states allow or select reciprocity. Some neighboring states will accept the other states permit while that state does not accept theirs, (MN/WI for example). The number of states that accept another states permit also depends on the resident non-resident status of it's holder. Part of the decision may be a result of whether states have a castle doctrine law in place. There are a number of states that refuse to pass a castle doctrine law, in these states you are not allowed to shoot someone with a handgun unless he has killed you first.

I have an Idaho license for my primary and a non-resident Utah. Together those give me 32 states. The one I really need is Oregon and that is turning out to be a huge pain in the arse.

My Missouri resident permit is good in Colorado. MO is nearly as good as Florida but I don't know about Non resident.

Sheriff Palmer of Grant County is pretty good about issuing non resident permits.

AK gives you 37 States. Add WA & OR and you have at least 40. Yes AK only gives permits for residents. Come up by the first of June, establish a residence, fish your little heart out in June, July , and August. Take a CC class somewhere in there and file for your permit after ninety days. Hang around in September and do some hunting. They have thirty days to issue your permit. The permit is good for five years even if you no longer live in AK. You can't renew it unless you again establish a 90 day residency.

These three States give you pretty much everything except CA, HI, IL, and the north eastern Peoples Republics. Then again, HR 822 would take care of it all.
