What's a troll?

New here, curious about what a "troll" is.

Either one of the following:

1. Someone who posts something you disagree with that gets "under your skin" because you are not in control of your responses to what you read and hear and feel compelled to respond to everything that disturbs you with the "troll" allegation;

2.

Someone who joins a forum of ideas that he disagree's with to incite angry reactions, by posting items he beleives will generate that response, so that he can then sit back and gain entertainment with the reactions he has caused.

IMHO this says it best.

I believe Troll comes more from the 'fishing' type of troll and not the 'ugly fellow under the bridge' type troll.

It's like trolling for a bite from a fish and then reeling it in. That's the way I've always thought of it.

It brings one picture to mind as to the way the person might look, yet it means something about what he's actually doing.

Also, on this site, there is a contest for "forum cop title" for whomever can yell Troll! first. It's almost like a trophy. This will also ensure that you get no feedback on the initial post because a pissing match will ensue between the three troll police on the board. The winner is usually whoevers mom let's them stay on the internet past their bedtime or whoevers AOL dialup account fails first.

In the minds of some people, a troll is anyone who disagrees with them. They throw the "T" word around out of desperation when they can no longer defend their POV.

To the rest of us, in most cases a troll is someone who "trolls" the internet looking for a fight much like a fisherman trolls the water for fish. Trolls have very little or nothing intelligent to say and usually just go around contradicting others just for spite.

It's not limited to that. There are felons who troll these boards looking for sympathy.......nut-cases and wannabe Rambos who troll the web looking for like-minded people....miscreants looking for validation.....the list goes on.

Hey! That excellent description sounds exactly like 'nogods' & 'elspeth'!! :jester:

This is exactly correct, the tell tale signs of a troller are:

1> A very small number of posts, generally under 10
2> A completely controversial question (Such as what if I shoot someone in the head for squirting water on me, but they may have had a knife too, or a question equally as dumb)
3> Generally they use the incorrect terms for items as well.

I have found that even if you spot the troll early on and alert others, they seem to be mesmerized by the troll's power of persuasion and people feel compelled to continue to comment on the post despite the fact the OP clearly isn't interested in your response other than to add to the hot topic or deny the troll allegation.

Now to avoid being falsely identified as a troll, you should ask some "normal" questions first, introduce yourself, read some posts that are already on a site (to answer some questions ahead of time), the search function for most sites is pretty much useless, so enjoy and don't troll lol

Desert, warbirds, outlaw...please oblige.

This is a troll.

Per what everyone has said do you see anything here but an attempt to incite?

The definition of troll should include being butt hurt about something.

No one told me there were prizes involved! If there are warm chocolate chip cookies as well, I want to hear about it NOW.

Being a troll also includes taking cheap shots at people who have not even posted in a thread.
