What to take to bed with you - not a joke......your car keys!

Put your car keys beside your bed at night.

If you hear a noise outside your home or someone trying to get in your house, just press the panic button for your car. The alarm will be set off, and the horn will continue to sound until either you turn it off or the car battery dies.

This tip came from a neighborhood watch coordinator. Next time you come home for the night and you start to put your keys away, think of this: It's a security alarm system that you probably already have and requires no installation. Test it. It will go off from most everywhere inside your house and will keep honking until your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the key fob chain. It works if you park in your driveway or garage.

If your car alarm goes off when someone is trying to break into your house, odds are the burglar/rapist won't stick around. After a few seconds, all the neighbors will be looking out their windows to see who is out there and sure enough the criminal won't want that. And remember to carry your keys while walking to your car in a parking lot. The alarm can work the same way there. This is something that should really be shared with everyone. Maybe it could save a life or a sexual abuse crime.

P.S. This would also be useful for any emergency, such as a heart attack, where you can't reach a phone. My Mom has suggested to my Dad that he carry his car keys with him in case he falls outside and she doesn't hear him. He can activate the car alarm and then she'll know there's a problem.

Hmmm...that is a good idea...I've never thought of that! Now there will be three things I have to remember before I head upstairs -- my car keys, my carry gun and my husband! :sarcastic:

Sorry...can't help that one above.

I would prefer the sound of my German Shepherd barking angrily and the sound of me racking 00 buckshot into my 12 gauge pump action shotgun...
But that's just me, I'm silly that way.

My panic buttons are .45acp & 5.56 mm

Thats a good idea. I dont have an alarm on car or truck so i guess I'm glad i can tell the difference when the dogs bark, saying "let me out or i'll dump in the house" and "you need to check outside somethings not right". Living out in the country, I'd say 9 of 10 homes have firearms at the ready and four legged friends. The trick a BG would have is finding that 1 of 10 home. "you feel lucky punk??" "well, do ya??" hehehe.

That might work in some places, but most times when car alarms go off they are ignored these days - at least they were the last time I was in a city. Most folks don't bother with such stuff out here.

Don't have any of those alarm things either. I'm deaf, so they would not do me much good. I do have motion detector strobe lights that should scare the **** out of anyone sneaking up on my house. I see really well, so the 20g mossy will probably be enough to finish the job... if anyone wants to really push their luck.

That looks familiar.

My panic buttons are A) 12 gauge, B) 40 cal, C) .45acp and D) 12 gauge. Next to the clock are two extra mags for the 40 cal. I need to get a pouch for those that I can drape over my neck if I get up in the night because I don't have anywhere to put spare mags if I leave the side of my bed. I'll probably just get a belt pouch and thread some para cord through it.

Oh, and the two Labrador Retrievers too. They aren't mean but they do make a racket if a stranger comes in or if there's a strange/unexpected sound.

Home has no trespassing warnings, an alarm monitored and notification to cell phone, cameras which sense movement record and send to cell phone and off site, two large dogs 90lbs and 125 pounds which will eat anyone coming into yard, they have access to house and garage. Wife or myself will greet you with firepower, my bedside looks similar to the one above except includes 870 pump 00 and slugs. No warnings are shouted.

The first thing you will hear is you or your partner screaming to get the dogs off this will also be picked up by the cameras for my viewing enjoyment. Dogs will only eat from specific bowls after earlier untrained dog was put down with poison. Alarm folks will notify police and ambulance, this will give dogs 20 plus minutes to continue reminding you not to break into folks homes. Peace, Love, Colt 45.

This came to me as an email fwd; fwd; fwd; and I actually read it! (you all have someone that forwards you EVERYTHING) I thought it was kind of interesting, another tool in the arsenal maybe. Two things really caught my attention: "My Mom has suggested to my Dad that he carry his car keys with him in case he falls outside and she doesn't hear him. He can activate the car alarm and then she'll know there's a problem" THAT IS A GREAT IDEA! and: in the event you do have an intruder, if you have a car alarm and lights flashing in the driveway you are going to confuse him as to why that is going off and how did it get activated, you now so you have a slight advantage at the time.

I would rather avoid the fight than have it. Some lights are on outside, I have a few dogs, house is always locked up. As much as I would like a shotgun for the house, it doesn't work well with my narrow hallways. I use my Glock 19 instead.

That's why my shotguns are short. Well, those two are anyway. They both have tactical lights on them too.

You know, on the original car key remote theme: I used to have remote start on my Suburban. Loved to park wtih defroster in high in winter, just push the button and have a cup of coffee in the morning while it warms up. Same approach with A/C on max in summer. But it occurs to me that a bandit who suddenly saw the lights come on and heard the 454 roar to life, might wonder just who or what was behind those tinted windows... I think it could be a deterrent. BTW, those systems lock the doors, and if the first thing you do is not putting the key in the ignition it shuts the vehicle down.

With a 454, it waits until after you put the key in to shut the vehicle down, because it's out of gas. LOL! When did Chevy quit putting 454s in Suburbans? It's been a while. My last two Burbs had 350s.
