If you had to bug out on foot or car and could take one long gun and one handgun, what would it be?

Long Gun - Springfield Armory M1A SOCOM

Handgun- Glock 21

I would also have to throw my Great GrandFathers 1911 in my pack, because I promised him I would always have it with me in hard times.
 
IF we are talking what we actually have and not what we would like to have then My HK P2000 sk lem and my Bushmaster rifle.
 
If it's what we actually have, Smith and Wesson model 65-3 revolver. It goes bang every time.

M&P45 would have to be the next choice it's been flawless..

I had one but sold it (jackass), Browning BPS 12GA pump. Never had any issues with it.

The handgun on me is almost always a 9mm or a .45 and there's an SKS in the trunk.
If I've got time to choose, either an AR or the FAL --depending on circumstances; and almost certainly one of the .45ACP 1911s
 
For me it would be one my BCW ar15s in 5.56 only because i keep a lot more .223 ammo than 6.8.
Handgun would be my Para LTC in .45 ACP or Beretta model 96 Inox in .40 S&W.
 
I'd have to go with my M1A Scout and my XD Service 45. I'll take the XD over my 1911's just because of the magazine capacity. I chose my M1A because the 308 is a versatile round and the Scout with it's folding stock make it compact. The biggest factor is it can take out anything I shoot!
 
Ok flame suit on. If it is from the guns I own it would be my Ruger 10/22 with 4X scope & 28 rnd mags and my Ruger 22cal mark III. Not munch punch but I only need to carry one type of ammo and can carry lots of it. It will kill and discourage two legged types. Harvest most game up to Deer. And the ammo can be used as barter for other needed items.
 
Me: Warthog .45 and FAL in 7.62

Wife: Tangfolio 9mm and 9mm carbine or AR-7 .22

I'm kinda along with you Mudpuppy.. This thread seams to be a "look what I got" kinda thread...
How did the US handle this type of scenario for the French in WWII.. They mass produced the "Liberator". They produced 1 million of these "POS"'s - You couldn't hit much of anything beyond two feet; but the concept is good..
Take what you have, use what you have, use it to get what you need... So you take the Liberator, shoot a guard, take his pistol. Take his pistol, and take someone's rifle. Take his Rifle and take someone's rocket launcher.
You are eventually going to want to take whatever the enemy is using, so that you can get ammo for it (from them).
So going with Mudpuppy, is it better to take a smaller gun, and be able to carry 500 rounds of ammo, or is it better to take a $3000 gun and carry 200 rounds of ammo?

How about a M1 .30 cal carbine and a colt .45?? IT was good enough against a few Germans and Japanese??

The most important weapon you are going to bring doesn't come in a caliber..
It comes in an "intelligence quotient". It comes with knowledge, and experience, and adaptability to situations.. It's your Brain.. Yes some "tools" will make it easier to obtain your objective than others.. But unless you use the brain that God gave you, it doesn't really matter what your #1 SHTF gun is..

There are three major requirements for a gun to be "good"
1) Does it go BANG every time you squeeze the trigger?
2) Can you hit, what you are aiming at consistently?
3) Is it a large enough caliber to take down what you are aiming at..

If you can say yes to these three questions, then I don't give a rats posterior if it's a $100 German Mouser, or a $6000 Engelbert Humperdinck (you can list your most impressive gun here)..
From there on, it's whats between your ears that is going to make the real difference..
 
Hootmon, an M1 and a .45? Isn't that what several already posted? How is your answer different from all the "Look what I got" posts you thought you saw?

While some of the posts mentioned .45s that were better than Mil-Spec, most of the posts were for a .45 or 9mm (both quite common) and the battle rifle they had at hand, none of which was far from the price of the M1 you mentioned.

Yes, we could arm ourselves with '98 Mausers, but the ammo isn't as readily available as the ammo for the weapons mentioned elsewhere in this thread.

I didn't say I had either.. I just implied that they were tried and true in SHTF situations.. You can get M1's as cheap as $400, now a colt .45, your going to pay a bit more for sure!!!

Take what you have, that is reliable (availability of Ammo is for sure a consideration - back to Mudpuppies point)

mudpuppy you hit the nail right on the head. The OP asked for a SHTF firearm or two. Your pick of that 10/22 is an outstanding one. BTW, you can take down a deer with a head shot with that.
I picked two IMO that would be the best for me in a SHTF situation.
There are others in the collection I have, but IMO would not be the best all around for me and there is no reason to name them.
My image of a SHTF situation does not contain firefights everyday.
 
@ HootmonSccy - I didn't mean for it to be a look at what I have thread. I guess I just started looking at what I would have bailed out with about 10 years ago, and what it would be now. I keep a Survivial/ Prep Journal with all of my gear, my thoughts, lessons learned, my weapon preferences, etc. My Bug Out Weapon preference has changed somewhat and so I just wanted to hear others ideas and preferences.

As far as the 22 rifle and pistol goes; you're right. I have several 10/22's and numerous 22 pistols and revolvers. I love'em. If I bugged out with 22's I could carry 1500 rounds in my pack with no prob. Try doing that with 308, or even 223. A 22 ain't no slouch for personal defense, if you hit right and constantly. Saw many, many bad guys fall to 22 rifles and pistols. Since I'm not really in Bear Country down here in Louisiana, except for a few small Black Bear, I have no problems walking through the woods with a 22. In fact my woods walking pistol is an old Glock 17, with a 22 Conversion Unit on it and a couple of spare mags.

But yes, it can be a look what I have thread if they want it to be. I'm always curious as to what everybody has, likes, or would rely on. Later......

Don't be offended and maybe I'm a little overly sensitive on the subject..
My friend and I were just having a conversation about a hunting trip he and his father went on and the other three hunting groups were laughing at him and his dad..
Look at those 10 year old boots
Look at those flannel shirts and old coats
Look at that old 8mm rifle, etc. etc. etc...

The son and dad had a long conversation about it (the son was quite upset and wanted to leave)

The dad says - Yeah, my boots are 10 years old, but they are always dry and always warm
The shirts I wear always keep me warm
Then listed the three items a gun must do (in my original post)..
Then his dad said, oh yeah, they have also each taken the best hunting spots on the land and left us with the swamp... But I have a plan...

The father and son got up earlier than anyone else and were out of the cabin 45 minutes before the others.. They slipped into the swamp and settled down..
You guessed it, as the other three groups (all much better equipped (at least $$$ wise)) slipped out to their hunting spots it drove the deer into the swamp.. My friends dad was the only one who got a deer that day.. It was the plan that made the difference that day

I also ride motorcycles (NOT a Harley) and get tired of others looking down their noses at me and others that don't ride a Harley.. Nothing wrong with a Harley, but it doesn't make them a better person, just like having a $3000 .45 doesn't make you a better person..

So, sorry if I was a little overly sensitive, but some can not afford a very nice .223 rifle with rails with lasers and night scopes and a coffee maker.. but they may be WAY more prepared in the head than some that have the $$$ to spend..

So to the original poster, I'm not saying that showing off was the intent of the original post..
To everyone else, respect each other, no matter what people can afford and remember that "THINGS" don't make you a better person, how much you love, share and give does..
 
@ HootmonSccy - Yep, I understand that. I had the priviledge of knowing my Great Grandfather until I was about 16 years old. He was a World War I vet from Trench Warfare. It would break your heart to see the man take off his shirt. The wounds and scars. He got the same treatment from hunters, but he was always the one laughing at the end of the day.
They would show up in matching camo clothing, new boots, even matching pick-ups, trailers and ATV's. $1500 rifles with scopes that you could use to see the lunar surface. They would snicker at him. But he was a real soldier and woodsman. And I loved and admired that man more than anyone. He would show up to hunt with khaki work pants, a plaid flannel shirt, old lace up combat boots, and an old beat up "Smokey Bear" hat he wore for years. His rifle was an old Military Springfield 1903-A3 with iron peep sights. He would sit on a boat cushion and lean against a tree, instead of an expensive stand. He would smoke cigars, while the other guys smear deer piss on themselves.
All of a sudden, several shots would ring out, some multiple shots from the semi-autos. A short time later, 75 yards away, a lone buck would step out into a clearing. The old tired eyes and iron sights would line up and steady the rifle. One shot, the buck falls. We drag him out with a drag made out of rope. The only deer taken usually.
He told me that a man should never be without 4 guns. A Springfield 03 / 03-A3, a Browning A5 Auto Shotgun, a Colt 1911 45 Pistol and a good bolt action 22 rifle. I have those particular guns to this day. In fact the 1911 he carried sits by me on a small table beside my chair loaded with FMJ ammo. It is stamped US Property US Army Model of 1911. I checked the serial number and it was made in 1913. I will never be without it. He gave me that gun as he laid on the bed he died on 3 days later. Told me to take good care of it. That it could get me out of just about anything I got into.
So believe me I do understand about limited money and old boots and guns. Never will I ever degrade an old guy with a old beat up gun and boots.
