What is the Cost in Your County?

Got Beretta's?
What is the cost to obtain a handgun license in your county.
I am not talking about the license fee. I am talking about the total cost including the license fee and to be fair, I am excluding the actual cost of a gun.
It starts with the decision to buy a handgun.
In my county, this is a 1 year process.
You must first get an application; have it signed in duplicate by four references. You must get 4 fingerprint cards, obtain a NRA Safety course certificate, get 4 passport photos, purchase a Money Order, and have the application Notarized.
I have put together a calculator on my website to add the totals.
Would you be surprised to know that before you can even buy a handgun you may have to spend $300.00 or more first?
Now you can go out and buy a $300 to 800 handgun.
For some people this is a weeks pay, for others it is a days pay.
I am asking USACarry Members to calculate your costs and then post the following info here:
Example:
In Erie County New York my license cost me $351.25
Because the mileage involved as well as parking etc varies the spread will vary.

We don't have gun permits here but a Concealed Carry permit costs $20 a year and takes about a week to get.

It used to be $15, but the Sheriff got tired of having to keep change for a $20 on hand.

Newton county Missouri license cost $ 0.00 we don't have such a thing the only up front cost is the gas it takes to get to the gun shop.
Good luck God speed

Here in NC my total cost was; $100 for the Safety Course & $98 for the Permit. I've heard others say their costs were less, but I'm a firm believer in the aphorism; "You only recieve the quality you pay for..."

In SC the class cost me $90 this included the photo, fingerprints and class.
Being a disabled vet the actual permit was free.
Cost of class and permit including postage to mail $92.75
Money spent in gunshop while waiting to get my turn on the range---we won' go there.

I live in Chattooga County Ga. and we have to pay $40 to the Sheriff Dept for finger printing and a background check, then we pay $20 to Probate Court and our CCP lasts for 5 years.

The Gun Center,in Erie county,NY, charges $55 for the NRA safety course and includes application, photos and notary.

Pittsylvania County Virginia 50 $ handgun safety course, 50$ permit cost .50 to mail it to me :) 23 days from paying circuit court clerk to in my hand

Around here you need a Drivers License but do not actually have to have one, just be 21, have a clean record and valid ID. Drive or walk to the gun shop, pick out gun, pay for gun, walk out. Pick up Roses and Candy for Wife on the way home. Depends on how much you want to spend on Roses and Candy as to cost of getting gun if you exclude the actual cost of the gun.

I have had my permit here in NY for some time but I used your calculator to see how much the actual costs would be. 272.75 is what it would cost me today and does not include the gun or ammo. Ouch, what happened to will not be infringed????

MA is $100.00 now. It used to be $25.00, but the SOB's here need the money and figured the added cost would dissuade folks from applying. Ahhhh nope... Business is good.

Peace...

PA: $25/ 5 years. No class, no prints. Applied on a Monday, came through my mail slot the following Friday. Some counties print them right there while you wait.

Isn't it funny how they think increasing costs on a carry permit would reduce the number of permits applied for, yet they never seem to make that same connection when they want to raise your income/ sales/ corporate/ capital gains/ etc. taxes?

Ahhhh Yup... There be no logic in it. I try and resist the urge to pay, but there are costs for that as well..

I'll have to amend my cost analysis. Add $50.00 for the NRA basic safety course. I could not find the old document from my original one...

So MA $150.00..

Peace...

Yeah, it is a lot of money to pay for a Constitutional Right.

The hidden costs, miles driven to and from for going to the County Office, NRA Class, back and forth to the dealer etc is exactly what I am talking about. Some of the reply's so far show the difference between a shall issue and a may issue state.

When you hear politicians and groups like Bloomberg's start talking, hold on to your wallets.

We live in a Democratic, Federalist, Capitalist, Republic... Money makes it go round...

Infringement, no profit can come from that. I see it here in MA, and I mentioned it above, business is good.

Ammo prices at Wal-Mart went up.

Peace...

My local PD offers the class to qualify for a Class A LTC at no charge. If you live in MA, check with your local PD. The class here fills up every month, 3 months in advance (25 attendees each class). The wife and I took it last year....even though I didn't need to....spousal support. Needless to say, the class is in very high demand. When we went last year, there were about 8 or 9 females ranging 21 yrs to 55 yrs approx. That was good to see.

In Texas it's the same statewide, no permit needed to purchase handguns (min age 21) or long guns or ammunition. Permit is needed for concealed carry (CHL) and is open for those 21 years old. Active duty military can get a license at age 18. I don't remember if the state charges for active duty military.

There is a records check: health/emotional/mental, financial, criminal records.

For the first timer the state gets $140 for the CHL for four (4) year license. Military vets get 50% discount off the state's licensing fee.

Course costs vary but generally run about $100.

Two passport style photos run about $10.

Pistol qualification requires 50 rounds about $10 (9mm). Qualification must be with .38 caliber or larger. Qualifiy with a semi-automatic and can carry semi-auto and/or revolver. Qualify with a revolver can only carry a revolver. Once qualified can carry .22 and larger.

Finger prints are taken at the local PD for $10.

First timer about $270-$300 for a four year license less the cost of the handgun.

Rules for renewals keep changing but are to the benefit of the applicant.

Another benefit of the CHL is shops are not required to do a records check if you have a valid/current CHL. Some of the big box stores, like Academy, run the records check regardless.

TX CHL for me was $125 for the course and all photos, fingerprints, forms, etc. including a BBQ lunch (we're in TX you know) and because I'm over 60 half-price on the license was $70.
The 50 rds of .40 ammo to qualify was about $17 at Walmart and the Glock: priceless
