What is Open Carry – Really

It is the beautiful bold face of the 2nd Amendment
It is the American flag to America’s enemies
It is the ultimate symbol of American freedom
It is Ronald Reagan’s “Tear down this wall!”
It is “in your face” to the anti-gun left
It is George Washington to the British
It is storming Normandy to the Germans
It is “Cinderella escaping ” to her Concealed Carry stepsisters

If you have positive analogy or metaphor, please post it.

If you oppose OC, you may as well post on the the bradycampaign.org website because they use your arguments in opposing all carry.

To me, personally, the most important "what is open carry" is to deter the criminal from choosing me as a target and a means to defend myself and others should a criminal choose to attack anyway. Anything above and beyond that is just an added bonus.

'Open Carry' to me is an 'easier bullseye' for the BG.
It tells the BG's that he/they need to 'take me out first' before he/they can safely rob the place or commit whatever other violent crime he/they have planned.
I'll take concealed carry & the element of surprise over open carry anytime.
Just my .02 cents.

However, it should be noted that such an incident has never been reported to occur in real life. The closest thing reported in real life has been:

I still need the exercise, though.

Fantasyland & nonthinking..... Real world statistics (reality) prove your thoughts wrong... But, at least you carry.....

Fantasyland and non-thinking you say?

So are you claiming that it's not a good thing to have the 'element of surprise'??

Oookay.

Civilian open carry is a sign of posturing. Some think its effective, others think its dangerous. I simply don't want the world to know I'm carrying a gun. I will also say that if you do OC, be sure to have the gun secured to the belt and have some sort of security retention. Otherwise cowboy it up.

Some of us are simply saying that in our locations and circumstances the deterrence factor associated with the visible firearm is more effective than the "element of surprise." There are no absolutes in life. Only odds. For the majority of Americans the odds are in favor of a criminal seeing an armed citizen and simply moving on to an easier target or wait for the armed citizen to leave.

Right on! I agree with you 100%. :yes4:

Civilian open carry is a sign of posturing.

You are absolutely correct.

pos·ture

1. a. A position of the body or of body parts: a sitting posture.
b. An attitude; a pose: assumed a posture of angry defiance.

2. A characteristic way of bearing one's body; carriage: stood with good posture.
3. Relative placement or arrangement: the posture of the buildings on the land.
4. A stance or disposition with regard to something: "Those bases are essential to our military posture in the Middle East" (Gerard Smith).
5. A frame of mind affecting one's thoughts or behavior; an overall attitude.

Open carry makes a visible statement to the criminal, and whoever else wants to observe it, that I am not going to be an easy and defensless target for ciminal activity. Nothing wrong or evil about that at all.

By the way, I am angrily defiant. I am angry that criminals have been given free reign to do whatever the hell they want to in this country with little hindrance. I simply choose to provide hindrance to their actions.

I choose to engage in an active deterrence to crime, rather than passively possess the means to defend myself against a criminal who has already utilized their "element of surprise" to gain the upper hand prompting the need for defensive action.

I believe for the most part this: “in your face” to the anti-gun left

Here we go again, another off topic thread about how great open carry is. I support open carry. I support concealed carry, and I dont think either one is better than any other. I think we've beat these horses so many times that there aren't any more left.

Edit: I just realized the OP posted these same exact words in another thread. How nice of him to double post it.

I rarely OC. I am along the same lines as those who say that OC is a big target, helps the BG to re-strategize. However, I am supportive of the concept of OC, that it is our right to do so.

All I EVER see in any of the threads on this is the Anti's coming out with the exact same FALSE AND TOTALLY UNVERIFIED IN THE REAL WORLD EXCUSES... and they have NEVER been able to to verify a single solitary one of them.... NOT ONE! But they all gather in these threads, pat each other on the back and they all agree with each other, like that is supposed to trump the FACT that they have NOTHING, ZIP, NADA... to prove what they say is true....It is quite pathetic if you ask me.. (I know, you didnt ask me...)

The horse is not dead as long as unverifiable assertions are made by those who oppose OC. There is verifiable evidence that OC does deter crime and no evidence that OC is dangerous to the OC’er.

And - I’m still confused as to why a person, who thinks that we are beating a dead horse, participates in this thread. This is a forum after all, so why chastise those who keep the discussion alive as they rebut misrepresentations made by the opposition?

Why?

I explained why. I need the exercise. I fully admit that I am beating a dead horse. I'm just right up front about it.
