What if you saw a Law Enforcement Officer in Trouble?

I'm a sheep dog.

My personal philosophy is that by choosing to wear a defensive weapon, I am also choosing to defend myself, my family, and others if necessary. Common sense and rule of law play a big part in this philosophy, but so does being a real man too. Our society has made boys into wimps and men taller wimps.

Look, I still open doors for ladies, let them go inside first, say please and thank you and a few other things that are getting rare in our culture. If we don't stand up for others (sheep), then our society has lost more than just it backbone, but it future.

Think of the mass shootings in the last 20 years. How many times have we heard about the Luby's Diner massacre, a McDonald's, High Schools, Universities, Military Base, or Shopping Mall - and just this week a shoot out at a California Mall and a nut in a school board meeting - where everyone lays down like cowards to die.

Were those guys in the school board Meeting in Florida pacifists? The stayed seated where when the bad guy sprayed the wall, when he pulled his gun, when he beat down an old lady who tried to disarm him...where are the men in America?

And good for the x-cop/safety officer that finally shot the guy, but after he shot at the Superintendent at point blank range twice? What the heck? He should have took that guy down as soon as he had a shot.

We always hear the what if someone had a gun question, but in reality having a gun and being willing to use it are 2 different things. I carry to protect my family first and of course myself and anyone who may need help as long it doesn't endanger my family.

Every circumstance is different and has to be evaluated on the fly, but if you're not willing to man-up when the SHF, then don't carry a gun or at least don't tell people you carry a gun so they rely on you.

I carry a gun so that if I was in a Luby's situation, I would take the guy down before he killed your wife, kids, parents, or you. And if I'm not there and you are, would you be the Sheep dog for me? Bad stuff happens when good people fail to act.

No legal guns could have been in the meeting except the safety officer's. He had to go back out to get his from his car as he wasn't packing when he first got there.

I would do whatever is in my power to assist the officer. No matter what 911 says.

And to the people who say that it depends on the cop that just blows my mind. Who cares if the cop gave you a ticket for speeding and you weren't. You would hold a grudge against a cop so much that you would see him get hurt or even killed just to prove a point. Shame on you.

This thread started with the question, "Would you help a police officer in trouble?" Essentially, this is either a yes or no question. By "being in trouble" I would assume the officer would be wrestling with the BG and immediately need assistance, no questions asked. I would not have to sit down and analyze the situation to determine if I would help, how would I help, should I waste time if the situation is so dire and dial 911 or should I get off my a$$ and act before the LEO is hurt or killed? If I didn't help, I would be so ashamed that I would just take my gun home and lock it up because, at a time you have to bang your cajones together as a man, I would have failed.

2. I have no legal responsibly for the Officers safety

The best thing anyone can do is call 911 and report what is happening.
If not you will be putting your life and the lives of your family at risk, for if things don't go your way you will be arrested and jailed till you get to go before a judge.

The times we live in now doing the right thing can cost you more then what you would be willing to put on the line for someone you don't know. As most of us will do what ever it takes to protect our family at whatever the cost but my first duty is to provide for my family and getting arrested and having to pay legal fees will only be hurting my family. The world we live in now thinks that the responsibility to protect others only belong to the Police officers and anyone else with a gun is a criminal. In this type of world I will not be willing to take the risk. For my CWP only allows me to defend myself when I have fear of my life being at risk. I can not use my gun to defuse the risk at hand without being charged for brandishing a weapon even though by showing the bad guy I have the means to defend myself and the person they are attacking with lethal force if necessary should be all the reason needed for the bad guy to walk away.Though I will still end up being the one going to jail for brandishing my gun. Since getting my CWP I have been instructed that if my gun comes out of concealment it should only be for one reason and that being to eliminate the threat that is causing me to fear for my life.

Very good point..... The US Supreme Court has ruled that the Police have no "Legal Obligation" to protect an individual........

In SC we have the Alter Ego rule, which basically says if you see someone in imminent danger of death or great bodily harm, you can presume it is you and can act to protect that person as if it is you. That would mean, IMO, based on imminent death or great bodily injury, you can shoot to kill. The rule says nothing about it just being a civilian so assisting an LEO is the same thing. This still comes down to your experience and abilities and the specifics of the "what if"; as a minimum you call 911. Treo made a very good point--if a trained LEO cannot handle the perp, why do you think you can?

The Police have become jack booted thugs, murderers, thieves, etc.... Until such a time as the so-called "good" cops start turning in/arresting and testifying against the "bad apples" , they have alienated themselves, and burned their own bridges.... The "good ones" are just as guilty as the "bad" ones until they do their damn job and arrest ALL criminals, especially the ones in uniform... THEN they will have earned respect, NOT before.....

How the hell would YOU Know, without a doubt, that the so-called homicidal criminal in your example isn't actually an innocent person defending his own life against a murdering thief in a uniform???? How do you know the "cop" in your example is a real cop???? Unless you witness the entire scene from the beginning, or know the officer personally, you may be helping the WRONG PERSON....

We should have made this a poll. Think we would see there are 5 or 10 times more "good people" who would aid a fellow human being (or at least would like to think they would) than the callous, authority hating/fearing cowards posting otherwise. Shame on all of you!

I think the answers to this question will be a good source for anyone wanting to judge the character of members of this forum. Who would you want on your team during times of trouble? I predict some of the cowards will delete their answer to this question, and rightly they should.

I firmly believe if I came upon a situation where an LEO was in trouble, ie being beat down, or out numbered, I would pull my car over, draw my weapon and get the person off the LEO. I would only hope someone would do the same if I were in the same situation. They protect us, and from time to time, need our help.
I would hopefully be early enough before the LEO was in serious trouble.

True, I have more respect for Fire Fighters. Those men and women go into burning buildings to save our lives without even thinking "what if they are another race, what if they are gay, what if what if what if. I have TREMENDOUS respect for them.

I have only a fraction less respect for police. They are also putting their lives in risk of death each day they leave their house, and if I am there to render help, I won't blink to do it.

I would help any soul in need of help. No matter what, ANYONE, ANYTIME, ANYWHERE.

But that's just me.

I guess I am fortunate in having lived so long that I can remember a time when there was compassion in this country for one another and when people were not reluctant or afraid to do their civic duty. I am amazed at the responses elicited to the question of helping a LEO in trouble. There are those who have said they would help the officer and there are those that wouldn't. The fear of possibly getting into trouble for helping is valid but the alternative could possibly cost the life of the LEO. Venomous attacks on LEOs in general is beyond comprehension. Jack-booted thugs, murderers and other derisive comments against law enforcement personnel are pure hogwash and unwarranted. I have no doubt that there are crooked LEOs in the world just as there are civilians who are just as contemptible. They are weeded out often as you can plainly read in the papers and see on TV. Ours is far from being a perfect society and, personally, I can see the need for LEOs. I would venture to say that they who rag against them the most are the ones who would be in trouble the most with the law. But that is just my opinion and you know opinions are like certain parts on one's anatomy. We all have them and they all are malodorous. But.......I doubt there is anyone out there who will not call the police in an emergency!

I agree. As someone who grew up in a Police Station (Mom a dispatcher OSHP, Dad a deputy, step dad a deputy) I can say that there are bad ones. They don't last long and are usually on the other side of the bars soon. To think that someone would just drive by my dad while he is getting beaten just because he is a cop is terrible.

My son is a Deputy Sheriff in a midwestern state. He is very capable, highly trained in Martial Arts since he was 8 years old, a weight lifter and a very good shot. He is also compassionate, kind and fair. His fellow Deputies that I have met, men and women, are good people. I am especially impressed with them since I know what they have to deal with, day in and day out. So, my experience and view of Law Enforcement is a little different than some other people have expressed in this thread, but to answer the question, if the situation arose, I am sure I would want to assist the LEO.

The police VERY REGULARLY murder, drive while drunk, steal, frame people, etc.....
