I always hit the open-road (even if not camping) with:
- my EDC sidearm (either a CZ P-01 or CZ 75B SS (cocked & locked with Speer 124gr 9mm +P GDHP) always concealed on my person, if CC allowed, plus 2-4 extra mags (14 rd ea. for the P-01, 18 rd SP-01 mags for the 75B).
- a S&W 686+ .357 Mag (loaded with DoubleTap 125gr. Bonded Defense JHP (in the truck console) with 4 speed-loaders & an extra box of reload ammo handy.
- a Mossy 500A (with a minimum of 31 rds of mostly 00-Buck with a few 1" Slugs in the mix on the Knox stock and/or attached to its scabbard - just in case.
(Unless, of course, I'm traveling through gun-grabbing or less tolerant states then the Free State of NM - can you say Kali/West Coast or NYS/Northeast?...then of course the all get unloaded and locked-up, per Fed & appropriate state laws, till I can GOOD ASAP!!!) ...then again, in spite of the beauty, I see no reason to go camping in those places for any sane reason.
If camped and stationary:
- ALL are always very close at hand, on my person (in whatever the 30+ States I am licensed to CC or those others allowing open-carry), and the other shooters (in predator territory) in my tent/bag or locked very nearby, in the easily accessible truck.
If I am trekking a very very short distance from base camp (especially here in the SW & Mountain West where Open carry is legal):
- one of the CZ's with reloads - CC'd, or otherwise Open if allowed & CC not (if neither allowed - locked & hidden back in the truck, but easy access with the Mossy).
- ALWAYS the S&W 686+ on the hip, Open (loaded with 1 snake-shot rd for the rattlers followed by 6 more .357 Mag 180-200gr BCSP, with 1-2 speed-loaders with only the BCSP loads) for the usual predators. Unlike the bears, the damn cats & 2-legged rabid chuckleheads like to stalk ya before they pounce for feeding!
When I really hit the back-country (In addition to the sidearms, I take along the Mossy too, riding easy-access on my Eberlestock Terminator Backpack (especially in Grizz country...don't forget the bell!).
Now, however, if I'm camped anywhere within 150 miles north of the Mexican border...another story...that's when rigged perimeter alarm trip-wires go up & my Zastava M70 AB2 Underfolder AKM, with a 6 mag (20-30 rds. ea.) bandoleer come along too! You'll never know where that might be sleeping, Poncho! :butcher:
As is said, "Better to have and not need, then need and not have!". I've been shot at way to many times in my 60+ years...so, being a good boyscout a long time ago, I never forgot..."Be Prepared!" :yes4:
