What exactly is "The Sandy Hook Promise"???

Means that some nitwit is trying to promote some half assed website taking donations standing on the graves of the victims of Sandy Hook for little more than notority and monetary gain.... Keeping our children safe? Shouldn't these people be far more worried about the fact that North Korea is posturing for a nuclear bomb test combined with long range missle test? What will these nitwits demand when NK tests an above ground bomb? Why aren't they petitioning Washington to act accordingly and demand NK be disarmed. Come on boys and girls the world has returned again to become a much more volitile place where thousands could be wiped out with a push of a button... This is the true definition of an assault weapon yet our fearless leaders sit on their hands and do nothing except figure out how they can just drive this country into ruin... Look West my fellow Americans into the fireball that is the next nuclear revolution....

This is what it says here about them:

SHP "About" Page
SANDY HOOK PROMISE
Sandy Hook Promise (SHP) is a non-profit corporation* created by members of the community of Newtown, Connecticut in response to the shooting on December 14, 2012, at the Sandy Hook Elementary School, which killed 20 children, four teachers and two administrators.

A PROMISE IS BORN
There was a gathering of people in Newtown. It was in someone’s kitchen, and it was filled with friends and neighbors who knew they needed to be together. Gradually, as they spoke, they also realized something else. They understood that they had a responsibility. To honor the kids and teachers they’d lost, as well as the survivors. They promised to do whatever they could to not let this tragedy stand as just another in our country’s history.

WITH EVERY HUG, A PROMISE
The first mission of SHP is to support the families of the victims, the survivors, first responders and teachers and staff of the school as well as the community of Newtown, (“our community”) by providing financial and service support and assistance whenever possible and for as long as it takes for each individual to heal.

THE PROMISE OF COMMON SENSE

Moving forward, the SHP mission is to work to identify and implement holistic, common sense solutions that will make our community and our country safer from similar acts of violence through education, outreach and grass-roots discussion. SHP believes the time has come to enter into these discussions with equal parts of Love, Compassion, and Common Sense.

THE PROMISE, THIS TIME, OF REAL CHANGE
This is the time. The time to stand up and say that our society should not live under the threat of this kind of violence. Sandy Hook Promise is committed to making Newtown be remembered as the place where we came together both as a community…and as a nation, and decided that we must do everything we can to prevent tragedies like this from happening again. Let Newtown go down in history as the place where real change began.

If it truly is a group of Newtown residents, I'm not going to foist a bunch of criticism on them. No doubt, their thing is a bunch of leftist clap-trap, but grieving is something I'm not willing to decide for others how they should conduct. If it makes 'em feel good, I don't really care. Unless they actually come up with some proposal(s) to make things "better," at least some kind of charter and mission statement, they're not likely to get the 501(c)(3) status they have currently only applied for, as per the notation at the bottom of the above linked page.

Now, if it can be proved that this is really a site owned by some pabulum-puking 'puter-geek sitting in his underwear in front of a computer screen in Podunk, USA, then they should be shamed, shunned, prosecuted for fraud and jailed for trying to get donations by dancing on children's graves.

Some concerned citizen could probably write to the Newtown PD or Mayor's office and make them aware of the site, and ask them if it's legit as far as they know. But either way, I don't see it going anywhere without a deeper message than they've got fluffing around on that site now.

Glad to have you chime in Blues. Prefer you charcoal avaitar but the firey face is pretty cool.... I do like reading your posts and find them interesting and thought provoking. I am always skeptical of non profit organizations that are spawned via the internet. As we have seen with this tragedy as with every tragedy there have been scumbags who have ventured to profit. Right now they are in the process of becoming a non profit.

Sandy Hook Promise is comprised of two nonprofit corporations – Sandy Hook Promise Foundation, which is in the process of applying for its recognition as a section 501(C)(3) organization and Sandy Hook Action Fund, a section 501(C)(4) advocacy organization.

So they are not quite there yet......

Plus looking a little deeper into the site and you'll find this:

We welcome the introduction of any and all proposals made with the intention of keeping our children safer. While we have not yet developed a consensus on any one particular approach or package of approaches, it is our hope that these initiatives will start a conversation in Congress and around the country on ways to reduce the incidence of gun violence and that Congress ultimately will act soon to keep our communities safe.

Looks a bit like a shady version for the advocation of gun control...

Since we have had the Community Organizer in Chief.........every F'ing thing has to have an organization pushing for some social change BS.
.
How about you just mourn and get on with your useless life...............jeeesh........idiots.
.
There are those who pray for SHTF just to clean house.

Oh, I agree that that's what it looks like.

There's a fairly easy way to tell if they're open to real solutions other than gun control though. Just send in a suggestion that they allow concealed carry by teachers/administrators, or hire armed guards, or allow off-duty or retired cops to volunteer, or the real kicker, allow CWP holders to volunteer to stand guard at schools. Even just one guard of one description or another driving to and from the district's schools on random patrols would make their schools safer than they are now. If they're just being phony about what they're after, their blow-back from such suggestions would be pretty obvious I would imagine.

If they want a real discussion on ways to accomplish their goals, they need to make the suggestions public, and allow for public discussion of them, or at least allow the public to see their discussions, even if they don't allow public comment within them.

I'm not suggesting that they're anything other than what you surmise them to be, Blackthorn, I'm just kind of playing wait and see. And I really do have an aversion to criticizing people for doing pretty much whatever they can to heal after such a horrific event. There's a time-limit on that, but I can't really say what it is. It just hasn't expired yet is all I can say.

sounds like another money making scam to me under false pretenses and pulling at the publics good heart and emotional strings to con them out of money.......i bet it goes to the actors that staged the event

As long as it is those involved with the process of greiving I agree with not critizing them... There really is no time limit for them nor I believe there ever will be. I do have distain for those who will use the grief to forward their ideals or manifests... I, like you shall wait and look for their true intentions. I am sure the will be quickly revealed either good or bad...

When I said something about the time limit, I had Sarah Brady in mind. The limit may be more or less indefinite, but not many who may have been able to forgive her for her initial reactions to her husband being shot, are still that forgiving now. She is pretty much despised in the gun community now, for those who allow themselves to despise others that is. I hold contempt for her positions, but oppose her on political, not personal, grounds, and I imagine I will feel the same way towards the gun-grabbers that emerge out of the Sandy Hook community from here on out.

Anyway, just wanted to clarify what I had in my mind when I typed that.

"This time there 'will be change'"....WTF does that mean exactly??

Sandy Hook Promise

I just explored their entire site, and found it disturbing. I sent the following email - it will either flush them out or outrage them legitimately, at which time I'll send a guilt donation. The site definitely sets off alarms, but it may be by accident. We'll see.

"Hello -
My name is Mark, and I attended Ms. Soto's wake. I did not know her, but as I told her mother, I wanted to "represent the rest of the world" that evening in expressing my sympathy. Indeed, there aren't many corners of the planet that did not hear about her bravery.

Having explored this entire website, I am disturbed at its content.

- Why do the children's families or the community itself require financial assistance?

- Since this incident represents a horrific 'perfect storm', that being a robotic young man possessed of a tortured soul living with a woman whose irresponsibility approached a hellish level, are not the chances of a reoccurrence infinitesimal?

- There is no Newtown community - indeed, Newtown's borders have vanished and the town now includes the entire nation. We must all mourn.

- On the matter of the national call for gun control, which I assume you support - What manner of perversity is this that evokes the deaths of children, who could not protect themselves nor be protected, toward the justification of incrementally relieving all others of that ability, of that hope?

This site has an unsettling, illegitimate aura about it. If you can explain exactly what you are trying to accomplish, I will be happy to make a donation.

Mark"

Very well put, as usual.
It would at least make sense if she went on a crusade against nut jobs capable of piercing Secret Service, FBI and state police protection and managing six hits in under 3 seconds with a .22 cal $25 throw away German revolver. Nope, not her - gotta get these assault weapons and crazy magazines off "the street", wherever the ---k that is...

They are utopians, all of them, no matter what their associations.
They will never let you rest and they have no intention of allowing you to survive.

Rahm Emanuel to Banks "stop lending to Gun makers"

http://weaselzippers.us/2013/01/25/r...manufacturers/

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, moving to take a lead role in the gun control debate, is turning up the pressure on banks that do business with firearms manufacturers.

Emanuel is sending letters to two major financial institutions, TD Bank and Bank of America, which offer lines of credit to gun makers suggesting that they stop lending money to the manufacturers if they don’t come out for new gun restrictions.

“TD Bank currently aids the gun manufacturing industry through a $60 million revolving line of credit with Smith & Wesson, a gun manufacturer that produces the AR-15 – an assault weapon that was used by James Holmes to kill 12 people and wound 58 in a crowded movie theatre in Aurora,” Emanuel’s missive to TD CEO Bharat Masrani states. “I ask you to use your influence to push this company to find common ground with the vast majority of Americans who support a military weapons and ammunition ban and comprehensive background checks.”

I hope TD tells him to ---k himself.

I saw nothing in what they said that indicated they wanted to grab guns. They want to actually solve the problem.

The Sandy Hook
PROMISE

Our hearts are broken;
Our spirit is not.

And it is with this knowledge
that we are able to move forward
with purpose…and strength…

This is a Promise

To support our own
our families, our neighbors, our teachers, our community
with dedication and love
as well as the material and financial needs they will require
in the days ahead.

This is a Promise

To truly honor the lives lost
by turning our tragedy into a moment of transformation.

This is a Promise

To be open to all possibilities.
There is no agenda other than to make
our community and our nation a safer, better place.

This is a Promise

To have the conversations on ALL the issues
Conversations where listening is as important as speaking.
Conversations where even those with the most opposing views
can debate in good will.

This is a Promise

To turn the conversation into actions.
Things must change.
This is the time.

This is a Promise

We make to our precious children.
Because each child, every human life is filled with promise,
and though we continue to be filled with unbearable pain
we choose love, belief, and hope
instead of anger.

This is a Promise

To do everything in our power to be remembered
not as the town filled with grief and victims;
but as the place where
real change began.

Our hearts are broken;
Our spirit is not.

This is our promise.
The Sandy Hook
PROMISE

If we could only get the liberals to listen to all possibilities instead of wanting to Ban Weapons.

Everybody, every human being with a soul, wants to solve the problem.
You are correct - they only make very vague reference to gun control under the "News" tab topics. My research into the general public reactions from the parents shows a mix of calls for more gun control on one side, and the same vague references as in their website on the other.
Under the circumstances I don't know what to expect in response to my email, but no response at all may be telling as well.
I'm standing by.

If you believe that this "promise" is not about gun control, I have some beach front property in Nevada, for dale cheap.

Fudo, you and I and Outlaw reveal an interesting study in human nature.
If you beat somebody up long and hard enough, they're gonna jump every time somebody sticks a hand in their direction, even just to shake hands. And if anybody's been beat long and hard, it's American gun owners.

If these Promise folks are in fact legit, as I said I'll send them my donation and best hopes and wishes for all they've been through. But after all we've been through, I don't think anybody could fault us for our skepticism. What can I say? I heard about them, checked out their site, and heard alarms going off. We're two forces that have to meet and size each other up. If an understanding can be reached, nobody's gonna be happier than us.
