What about OC holsters?

Hey Lukem, how about a "most popular OC holster" similar to the "most popular CCW holster" thread?

There is much to talk about OC holsters such as retention, carrying position, etc. etc. Not much mention
of them in the threads though. I usually OC here in AZ and have several holsters which I use for that
purpose.

I use a Blackhawk Serpa. Only problem is they don't make an XDM model just an XD. They have to send you another widget to help adapt the XDM. But then it's still a little loose. Otherwise it's awesome like all made in Montana products.

?

The XD one works fine with mine, although I don't use it. Most of the instructors I know won't allow them in class.

I have the Blackhawk for the XD and it works fine with my XDM. Most stores will let you try it before you buy it. The Serpa has been getting some bad press lately thanks to instructors shooting themselves and blaming the holster. If you draw the firearm correctly it will come out of the holster just fine and with your index finger resting along side the firearm and NOT in the trigger guard. It takes a bit of practice to do it right everytime but we don't mind that do we? I think we call that muscle memory. I also use the Safariland level III ALS with both the XDM and my 1911. Both of them are much more comfortable than those IWB holsters. I carry at the 4 oclock position. So far it looks as though everyone is as paranoid about retention as I am. :sarcastic:

I have a homemade OWB leather holster, which I boned for my Bersa. The only retention is the boning of the trigger guard. I only open carry around my own property, because I live in Texas where OC isn't allowed in other places. I'm old enough that I don't jump around enough to jar it loose. And it is worn at 3:00 so my arm keeps it covered most of the time.
I also have a Blackhawk Serpa for my Judge. I sometimes wear it around my place and when I'm working in my shop.

I use the versacarry for oc and ccw.

I have some heartburn with this rig. I haven't checked it out personally but it sure looks like retention is a problem here especially for OC. What stops the firearm from leaning away from you? Seems like you can be relieved of your firearm quite easily. Even versacarry recommends that you don't carry with a round chambered. That alone puts it on the no, no list for me. Then again, I am admittedly paranoid about retention while OCing. Also, I don't think I am comfortable with something plugging up the barrel.
Merry Christmas

My only criteria is that it cannot be leather and has to be made to fit the gun. Serpa is nice and so is the fobus.

I know that a lot of folks like leather and thats their perogative. Its just that it breaks down and can cause a unintentional discharge.

for my FN P9 open carry i use a "Bladetech" paddle holster and i love it! way more comfortable than the blackhawk serpas, they are made for fat people or something. idk. i looked for one for my S&W M&P 40, and in holster shopping for it i found you usually have to look for the XD 40 instead and they generally are interchangable. but ... it did not work. it was way too big, but maybe the product was accidently switched out in the store with one made for a hi-point handgun or something.

I use a Blackhawk Serpa for a glock 23 (compact .40 for non glock folks) I have had it for about 1.5 years and it has worked well for me. I use it with the paddle and belt holder depending what/what belt im wearing.

Hmm that's new to me. I suppose your referring to cheap leather holsters.? Care to elaborate?

Galco leather FLETCH Thumb break for my Ruger GP100 .357mag; DeSantis leather Thumb break for my Ruger LCR .38(Uncle Mike's for IWB); just ordered a DeSantis leather Thumb break for my new S&W SD9(Uncle Mike's for IWB). I really like the OWB holsters that hold the gun high and close to the body. I also like the thumb break models because I ride my ATV and motorcycle a lot and the thumb break models add just a bit more security over rough terrain.

I have used the Blackhawk for my S&W 40 for the past few years. Only complaint is the size of the paddle itself. I'm fairly skinny @ 165 lbs so the paddle is wider than my hip and/or dig into my side pretty bad. I still used it for years though.

I recently picked up a Fobus rig ($25 on Amazon), but have not yet got to wear it (Im in California for the holidays... eeewww!) but the paddle is smaller so I suspect it will be more comfortable for me. It does sit the gun lower in the holster and is a bit more compact than the Blackhawk but it does not appear to have any form of retention built in. Although I do not see that as a huge issue for me, I may pickup another holster with a thumb break for those days I plan to hike, bike, etc.

It's nice to have options.

Im sure that its more common in cheaper quality holsters. But its pretty self explanatory. When the leather breaks down with use and body oils, there is a chance that it will get into the trigger when reholstering.

Before you say that its a 1 in a million thing, just know that it does happen.
