Went to Wally World today for ammo

God Bless Our Troops!!!
I went to wally world today and noticed the price of ammo has consistently risen over the past few months. I am being told this is due to the cost of fuel, metal and etc. This is bunk! The same box of .308 Win. I looked at two weeks ago just had a new price sticker on it and WE are getting gouged royally. I am definitely rolling my own for rifle from this point forward.

Here is a really good info site: www.reloadersnest.com

I am sick and tired of big business gouging us in the eye in the name of rising fuel costs, when all they did was raise the price on something they already had in stock.

I think we all agree with that, Festus. It's getting out of control.
Pretty soon we'll have to eat ramen noodles for a month, just so we can go shooting. :ranting2:

i think everything is getting ridiculous fester! Gas, food, ammo, beer, porno, its all rising faster than our wages. ridiculous!

Yes LiquidG everything is gettin ridicoulousely high... If anyone comes up with a solution let me know, I'll vote for it............

It's the economy...

We're in a recession. Reminds me of the Carter years when my father was grumbling about having to fill up his tank on even numbered days.

Yep that was one of the biggest reasons I started reloading. But even the components have shot up. About a year ago I was buying 500 230gr Zero swage lead .45 bullets for around $35. Now they are up to $50 something. But still cheaper then buying factory stuff.

Hey did they ask you what the ammo was going to be used in, a pistol or rifle? I bought some .22 and was a little shocked when they asked what I'd be shooting that ammo in.

I was told the price of ammo is going up another 8% as of april 15.. lead stock piles are low. china is lowering their exports of lead.. I guess they need all the lead they can get to put in kid's toys.

We need a new business model...maybe a new alternative to buy and sell ammunition, other than at a regular store, or through the internet. Maybe local groups could do a bulk purchase and get free freight shipping, then sell it off to members at cost.

Aside from being pricey, the service at WM is terrible. Every time I go, there's no one in sporting goods; I have to track someone down. Last time I went, the woman had to go looking for the key for 10 minutes, and when they found it, it was under the counter. Then she shuttled me over to electronics, where I got checked out by a really creepy guy who seemed like a pervert.

That is a interesting idea, sort of a Co-Op for ammo.

I bet if you could get a big enough group together in the same area it might work pool your money and get a big enough shipment and they might sell it to you for wholesale prices. Should pass this idea around at the local range you shoot at see if there is any interest in it.

Another Change At Wal-Mart?

Yesterday I went into the Ridgeland, MS, store. I was looking for some 9mm - the Famous/Infamous Winchester White Box - to go to the range.

The Sales Associate for sporting goods told me that she has been told that handgun ammo is being dropped, and she indicated that attempts to order 9mm ammo have failed.

Anybody else heard this?

I dunno...the range I go to is also attached to a store which sells ammo so I'm not sure how receptive they'd be. The only outdoor range I know of is skeet only.

Never heard anything about that. I can't imagine it would be due to lagging sales though. Maybe they're afraid of the liability if they get sued for selling "weapons of mass destruction".

I like the idea of a group of private citizens getting together and forming a Co-Op so to speak. A large enough group to pool their resources to be able to buy in bulk mass quantities think wholesale here not retail. And to get it directly from the manufacturers. There must be a way to do this. A shooting club could do it if they can get enough members to buy in on the idea.

It's not a bad idea, especially as ammo prices will continue to rise rapidly with fuel, metals and everything else.

However, there's a lot of details to work out. First off, how big of an order needs to be placed to really get a good discount, and preferably have reduced shipping rates? Are we talking about 10,000 rounds, or 100,000 rounds or what? There's a threshold that would have to be met, and that would require members who sign up to keep their commitment to order. Here's an example based on scanty research: Say you get 100 people who say they're each interested in a minimum order of $105 in 9mm rounds, assuming that each 100-round box will be $15. That means the minimum delivery is 7 boxes (or 700 rounds) of WWB. If everyone orders the minimum, you'll be dealing with at least 700 boxes, or 70,000 rounds, and also $10,500. The minimum number of total rounds you need to get this kind of price is, let's say, 50,000 rounds (shipping has already been figured in to make things simpler). You start taking orders in January and tell people that you're collecting money through April for an order in May which will be delivered in July, and it'll be available for pickup until September.

Now...while lots of people seemed interested, they in fact don't come through. You collect enough money for 300 boxes, which is $4500 sitting in the co-op bank account. April comes, and Winchester wants your order in on deadline so they can be sure to have it on time. Now you're stuck...you've got a lot of money, but not quite enough to make it. You can't wait to collect more money, because a bunch of people are counting on their ammo showing up on time...but, giving it all back will be a huge headache and destroy confidence in the system.

So, the challenge is in getting enough members so that you'll almost certainly get a good discount, but not promising them a price that you can't necessarily deliver on. At the same time, you also have to make the offer enticing enough to attract a lot of people and make it worth their while to pay for something that they won't see for a few months. If the co-op massively overperforms and gets more people than you had counted on, then the savings could be passed on in the form of extra ammo.

So...now that that's out of the way, here's some more things to think about:

Assuming the orders are taken and the money collected, who handles all the money, puts it into a bank account, and writes the check? This would have to be overseen to ensure confidence in the system, to make sure there's no shady dealing. That can quickly cause any co-op model to fall apart.

Secondly, where is the ammo stored once it comes in? It has to be stored *very* securely and out of the elements, with no leaky roofs or excessive moisture. No one wants to shoot rounds that got mildewy during a heavy rain. It also needs to be somewhere that's convenient for members to come pick it up - which might exclude residential areas unless you want to look like a crackhouse. If there's a lot of it, then weight may be a consideration as well.

Record-keeping is also an issue. You've got to keep track of who ordered what and how much, and make sure that it got delivered, so that it's there when they come to pick it up.

Another thing to consider is which rounds to carry in the first place. If you have 100 shooters, some might prefer to put money into .40 and others might want .45; others might want 9mm...etc. Caliber disunity will quickly destroy the quantity buying advantage. It's not like buying a single monolithic product like toilet paper. After all, 20 shooters putting money into something won't get nearly as good a deal as 80 or 100 contributions would.

I think it can be done, and if done properly, could be a model for others to imitate. It just has to be done carefully, because there's a lot of money and valuable product involved.

wow that would kinda suck

We order ammunition in quantities of 100,000+ rounds in mixed calibers (9mm, .40 s&w, .45ACP, .223, .44 Mag, .38 special, .500 s&w). This allows our range to get a "good" price on the ammo as well as economical shipping rates. Problem is that sometimes ammo is out of stock which delays shipping. It can take up to 2 months to get stuff in at times. Shipping is billed at the higher rate if we request the "in stock" stuff to be delivered and wait for the "back order" stuff.

That is a good +I also like the ammo man. I would like to get to all the same calaber. Its just not working out.

I just stumbled on this thread. Amazing the difference between 2008 and now. I was just at my local Walmart this morning. The ammo case in sporting goods has been empty there for close to 6 months now. When you ask if they know when they will get more in, you get a one word answer “NO”. I never thought I would see the day when ordering ammunition on line seemed like the best option.
