My understanding is that I'll have to have my gun (unloaded) and my ammo in a locked box....I have a GunVault 300 that will be used....as I travel through NV and into CA and then back again on the way home to Iowa. Am I correct?
Thanks,
Gene

For California you must have either the unloaded gun in the glove box and the ammo in the trunk or vice versa. For Nevada the gun can be loaded and in plain sight on the seat, not concealed. If you exit your vehicle in Nevada you can legally open carry.

You are incorrect here. You are allowed to keep it concealed in the car (i.e. in the glove box) but not on your person without a CCW.

This is not correct. In CA you may NOT have your gun in the glove box or console. The gun MUST be in a locked box. The ammunition should be totally separate. Neither is to be accessible to driver or passenger. I recommend you put everything in the trunk. In my case, I drive a pickup. I put everything in a locked tool box in the bed of the truck. I have a bed cover which I also lock.

We will be driving....Thanks to all who have chimed in!
We will be in a truck...is the gun in the GunVault and the ammo in the glovebox a method that would be approved?

As long as the gun vault is not in the console, in CA anyway. I have no knowledge about NV.

Thanks for the input...I think I'll use individual GunVaults...one for the handgun and another for the mags/ammo.
Shouldn't be such a pain but that's the way it is.

You are not allowed to have your gun in the glove compartment in Kalifornia. It must be in a locked container other than the glove compartment and out of reach. If you have a car with a trunk, the gun has to be in the trunk.

I did see that OC was allowed in Nevada, not sure that's my thing though.....odd that they'd allow that but not CC.
Thanks for all of the input, we're not going to be in CA but for a few hours and in NV o-nite ... once on the way out and once on the way back.
Which brings up another question, I can have the handgun with me in my room, correct?

It's not odd considering most states require permission for the privilege to carry concealed...where they do not for open carry since it's considered a Right.

I've never had problems carrying in my hotel rooms.

A fine example of the out of sight out of mind mentality that the government has crammed down our throats. In reality, which person would you consider to be more "dangerous." The person openly carrying the gun so that you know they have it and you know where it is...or the person who might be hiding a gun - you don't know if they have one and if they do you don't know where it is at? Yet people get all excited over the sight of the gun when the person next to them might be hiding one and could be a mass murderer

TRAVELING WITH FIREARMS IN CALIFORNIA

HANDGUNS

California Penal Code section 25610 does not prevent a citizen of the United States over 18 years of age who is not lawfully prohibited from firearm possession, and who resides or is temporarily in California, from transporting by motor vehicle any pistol, revolver, or other firearm capable of being concealed upon the person provided the firearm is unloaded and stored in a locked container.

The term "locked container" means a secure container which is fully enclosed and locked by a padlock, key lock, combination lock, or similar locking device. This includes the trunk of a motor vehicle, but does not include the utility or glove compartment. For more information, refer to California Penal Code sections 16850

The statute reads that the glove box (or console) even if equipped with a lock itself isn't a "Locked Container." It doesn't mean a container locked with "padlock, key lock, combination lock, or similar locking device" can't be installed in one of these locations. The trunk itself does count (even without another locked box inside). I suspect the saddle bags on my Avalanche might be a gray area. I don't know what a "utility" container is.

Thanks for all the input....we'll be taking off shortly to pick up a frame for a 65 Mercury ParkLane Breezeway that we're getting back on the road.....a distraction from the shooting and racing we usually are busy with.
