Police in Roseburg, Ore., say a man who robbed a restaurant was armed with a can of bug spray.
Sgt. Aaron Dunbar says the robber entered Elmer's Restaurant late Monday wearing a green hooded sweatshirt, gloves and a beanie atop a shoulder-length blond wig that was pulled partly across his face.
The bartender tried to get away from the can of insect repellent when the robber brandished it, but the employee got a direct spray to his eyes & face incapacitating him.
The Roseburg News-Review reports ( Link Removed ) the robber grabbed money from a cash box behind the bar and fled. The amount of the take wasn't disclosed. The victim had to seek medical attention.

that is funny, there was wasp spray thread not too long ago.

Yes there was that's the first thing I thought when I saw this . Like the news must have reported that wasp spray is a good alt to a gun. Good thing they did . I could only hope the bad guys start carrying bug spray lol

Did he have to wait 3 days for the bug spray? How much did he purchase? How far can it shoot? Did he complete a background check?

We have to do something about the bug spray violence!

Would you draw on (and therefore shoot) someone if they pointed spray at you in a threatening manner? I suspect that wouldn't end well in court. But I don't know. Thoughts?

I would draw my weapon but I am sure there would be no reason to discharge it. I am sure faced with the concequences of taking a slug and convincing him of the evil act he is about to commit he would either drop the can as requested or run like hell in the opposite direction.

Americans are intelligent and reasonable folks, so if we just put our heads together, I think we can come up with some reasonable restrictions on bug rights that will prevent criminals and nut-jobs from getting bug sprays, while not interfering with legitimate bug-hunting and gardening rights. (nyuck, nyuck, nyuck)

Roach spray. RAID. Kills bugs dead.

if someone sprayed someting like that at me i would probably shoot them too and justifiably so however cops can spray folks for no good reason and get away with it but i can't defend myself against spray who is to say he try rape me after he spray me or something? oh hell no i won't have anyone spraying me that is assault justifying me to use what ever necessary to stop that threat

I'll bet that the lame-stream media ignores this one, too. And doesn't press for legislation. Anyone send this to Bloomy?

Funny comments and jokes aside, I feel we really do need to address the legal issue of defending your self with a clearly deadly weapon, your handgun, vs these oddball "weapons". A few made some good points, one being the potential lost of eyesight, even if temporary during the attack and then the poor-man's flame thrower which surely could be deadly. I may not be a lawyer, and think god for that, but doesn't ultimately proving in court you were in fear for your life? As was explained to me by my CHL instructor who was a former DA that prosecuted cases involving unlawful use of deadly force. It's all about proving with-in the "reasonable person" standard you were indeed in fear for your life.

In Illinois you are allowed to kill somebody if you are in fear of your life or serious bodily injury or to prevent or stop a forcible felony. Armed robbery is a forcible felony it will not matter what form the weapon is especially since it is potentially deadly it is toxic poison in a can after all.

Well, golly, if we want to get serious about this event, then I have two observations to make.

1. Apparently the robber had read our earlier post about wasp-spray. THAT is disturbing in itself, at least to me.

2. Insecticide is not just going to blind you and burn your eyes - it's a neurotoxin and can in fact kill you quite painfully if you get a heavy enough dose. Look at what it does to bugs. And it can kill you before the EMTs arrive if the dose is big enough - so if you are having a can of bug spray pointed at you you'd best duck or shoot, and fast. I don't think the bad guys are going to be considerate enough to buy the 'organic biological oils only' kind of spray just to be nice about spraying you.

I think I would deff shoot them it's intent to harm me with something that can make me blind non the less

I would definitely shoot them because I've seen what wasp/hornet spray can do. I sprayed under the shingles of my porch for wasps and it melted the tar stuff off the roof and it dripped onto my steps. It would definitely melt your face off if it was the powerful stuff. I actually carry a can of it in my front seat when I'm out and about and it says it will shoot about 25 feet.
