Want to Know best way to Conceal Carry for a portly man?

I am a little overweight and have a Glock 19 and was wondering what would be the best way to conceal carry?

Seems like more towards my back works better (away from the roll...lol) but was wondering if I should even consider a more compact size gun to fit/conceal correctly?

Thank You Everyone

It’s been my experience that sometimes there’s only a half inch difference between concealed carry and you might as well be open carrying. You have to move the gun around a little to find that sweet spot.

You also have to be willing to change your wardrobe a little you may have to go up a size in clothes depending on how you carry.

Ideally (and I hesitate to say this because I know it’s gonna start a fight) you could also lose a few pounds

I use a inside the waistband and have no problems at 3-4 position. I can carry a full sized M&P 40 all day in that rig. But if you want a smaller gun sounds like a good excuse to get one. Oh I also bought a very good gun belt.

Ive ran into similar problems with my gut and have found that inside the pocket works best for me. I sweat like a valet driver in Fallujah and much of it will end up on my pistol if I carry in the waistband or the small of the back. There is a solution for this problem in the Neoprene holsters being made by N82tactical. Link Removed I look forward to purchasing one in the near future.

I will most definitely look into maybe a little larger shirts.

And...... The last statement...

I actually was around 285 pounds about 3 years ago and now around 200lbs... but my height (5'7") doesn't allow me to spread the weight out. So portly it is right now. but losing weight now.

I do appreciate your honesty and advice.

Wasn’t trying to be a prick I am just about the same size you are now and I was just about the same size you were 3 years ago. So, Yeah I know what it feels like

I would think OWB would be the most comfortable. I'm a smaller guy and I primarily use a Bianchi Carrylok holster. In my search for reviews on it I found this one by a "man of larger stature":
He's using it with a 1911 but I know they make it for Glock 19.
I have the belt kind but they also make a paddle version.
Great holster with great retention.

I'm 5'11" 230 lbs. and HATE IWB. There, I said it :secret: What a relief. My solution is over sized T shirt or Golf shirt etc. untucked of course. I often carry OWB with one of my blackhawk holsters or a nice custom leather holster I picked up from the maker at a gun show. I'm looking at a number of shoulder holster rigs. I want one where the gun is carried vertically (I'm a bit past the point where my gymnastics would cause the gun to fall from the holster and I don't need snaps or anything as an extra form of retention). I also have a couple of t shirts with an under arm carry pocket from tactical 511 and a leather vest with gun pockets built into each side. Obviously those are for months where temperatures aren't breaking 100 (20 days this summer in Salt Lake this yr. with a couple more likely).
Good luck in your quest and congrats on a fairly massive weight loss effort.

MTB777 I'm built like you about the same height, a little heavier and I carry a Glock 31 IWB at the 4 o'clock position. I use a Ragsdale compression holder and I carry it high (there's three height adjusting holes for the clips) so the barrel only protrudes about 4" below the belt and with a loose shirt you can't see it at all. My wife doesn't know when I'm carrying. I carry from the time I get up until I go to bed. One time when she kissed me goodbye her hand accidentally brushed against it, she looked at me and said "Really?" I just smiled and said, "I'm packin'."

(I just saw benq's post) I forgot to mention my that my holster has a 15 degree forward tilt which keeps the grip closer to the body.

I carry at 8 o'clock as a southpaw, that would be 4 o'clock for RH. Also my gun's cant is more than 15 degrees making the grip angle up more than out. A bit easier to hide, less print. IMO.

5'9" 210 pounds but gut looks like 7 months pregnant. Taurus PT99 with 5" barrel or Taurus 845 with 4" (my preference being the latter). Crossbreed Supertuck at 3:30-4:00. 25-30 degree cant. Been working fine for 12 years.

It is not the gun, or the position you try to carry it in, as much as it is: 1: your gun belt & 2: Your gun holster. If you are not wearing a top quality Instructor belt, especially being heavy, you may never be comfortable. www.thewilderness.com. http://www.thewilderness.com/tactical-belts/easy-fit-original-instructor-belt/ Sizes to 15X. Spend time reading about the belts, and go as stiff as possible to get the most control. Suspenders also help. Never see a fireman at a fire without them.

Admittedly I am a man of substantial girth and have no problem carrying full sized handguns in the 3-4 o'clock position IWB. I actually find that my rolls seem to help conceal the weapon. Presently I alternate carry between a full sized M&P 9mm and an M&P 45c. I have personally shied away from the more compact guns because they can sort of get lost in the rolls LOL! For me a larger grip is easier to draw from.

Howdy,

I'm 6' 1" and 260lbs and I carry OWB @ 3:00.

I carry everything from a Kel-Tek PF-9 all they upto a Glock 20/21SF, 1911A1, Glock 35, Taurus Gaucho .45 Colt w/ 7 1/2" barrel and a few other full size handgun without any problems.

I haven't been able to figure out how to carry my Ruger Super Redhawk .454 Casull w/ 7 1/2" barrel IWB.

I am 5' 10" and about 320. Pocket carry is the easiest and most comfortable method for me.

My issue is that my backside is flat compared to my front. It doesn't matter what kind of belt I wear my pants sag in the back. I have a Comp Tac leather/kydex belt and Minotaur holster, a $200 combo. Even with those it's still a challenge to keep them up.

It seems in some holsters I have tried for concealment, have a more probable ND after firing 1-3 round semi-auto, then holstering that firearm still loaded in battery and trigger catching or sliding and snagging, pushing the round hard backward. Oh, I have never tried this and certainly not do it intentionally. I have looked at my sepra and paddle holsters which seem fine. In other words it appears to be a lower risk issue. Any comments.

Netraider, the holster that I use doesn't hold itself open so when re-holstering I am careful to insure that there is nothing that can hook the trigger. I always carry my Glock 31 with one in the chamber, so that is always a concern. Once the barrel has passed the edge of the holster the gun slides in pretty easy.

Agree 100% with both that is why I am looking for another alternative I hate IWB. They are uncomfortable so, looking for an OWB and need to find a way to conceal like suggested over grown t-shirt, a vest to cover weapon. Don't know yet but I agree with the above.

First thing I would suggest you look into is a good quality gun belt. There are many on the market. Stay away from leather belts that are not reinforced. Leather stretches when damp (sweat) and will become a problem as time goes on so why buy twice? Carry positions are as varied as people are. How do you dress on a regular basis? How much mobility to your shoulders have? Where do you live/work? Each of those questions narrow down the choices. If you are a casual dresser, then you might like an OWB holster. If you are in dress shirts all day and live in a conceal carry only state, you might want a tuckable IWB holster. You also might a shoulder holster variant like a Kangaroo Carry or the Trump Card (PistolWear). I do not advocate carrying beyond 4:00 on the waistband. When you draw from 5 or 6 o'clock, you most often sweep people and yourself on the draw stroke. If you don't know what I'm talking about, put a laser on that gun and draw from there. Have someone watching the light. It is amazing how much you aren't controlling the muzzle in those positions.

Good holster lines to look into: Prohibition Series (flashbang holsters), Looper Law Enforcement, Foxx holsters ... There are far too many to list them all.

Just remembered the Smart Carry Holster. No belt, carries great for most of the men I've talked to about it.
