Walther P22

My girlfriend and I went shooting today with her favorite little gun,the Walther P22..About 200 rounds into it she Was hit in the chest by the firing pin..She's alright but it will defiantly be bruised. What I was wondering is..what do I do now?The gun is only 3 months old and has only had about 3k rounds fired..I'm very sure the gun shop will not take it back and there aren't any firing pins readily available online..So if anyone who has had any
experience with sending a Walther back to Smith and Wesson please give me some insight on how to do so..Honestly I'd like to have a refund but I'm gonna assume they won't refund it..So I guess I'm gonna sell it if I can ever get it fixed.

The people at the gun store were dicks for the most part..And that was when I was a paying customer..I highly doubt they will help anyone out.Do you know if you HAVE to have a FFL ship it?

Walther/Smith should make it right, if not let a local smith have at it, and then go buy a differant gun, you haven't been dry firering it have you? cause I'v had a lot of 22s and never seen that before?

That sucks, do you have another gun store you can deal with? my gun guy would have given me, a refund, another gun, or a equal trade,

I would call S&W directly and ask them about repair and shipping. Seems to me that you are just sending the weapon in for repair the USPS should be just fine. Make sure though in case I am wrong.

NEVER EVER dry fired my guns, always been taught it ruins them...

Big difference in Florida and Tennessee man I grew up there..Even though Knoxville is a big city the people are MUCH nicer and understanding than here.

Contact Walther / Smith & Wesson directly and ask them how to proceed. I took a quick look at their web site and clicked on a link for a safety recall notice but it choked and went to the nether world. Weird.

The failure may have been from material fatigue or it could have been faulty material when the firing pin was punched from the sheet. Selling the gun because of a failure seems a bit premature to me, although I can understand your girlfriend not wanting to handle anything that bit her in the chest.

Part of the problem with the smaller caliber guns is the sheet metal parts are punched en mass from a large sheet of metal. There are always stressed or fatigued sections of every sheet of metal used in the manufacture of damn near everything that uses sheet metal. The fatigue could show up in the firing pin or your toaster. I would hope the manufacturer takes pains to verify that the parts are heat treated correctly but mass production produces a percentage of failures that go un noticed.

If you send it back to S&W they should be able to repair it with a high reliability factor. JMO (just my opinion)

Good luck with it.

I've sent a gun or two back to S&W. I called ahead, they sent me a box & label. When its done, they can UPS it back to you. You will gave to sign for it when it comes back. I'd ship UPS rather than USPS. There's no need for an FFL as its your property & not a purchase. I have a P22 & haven't had that issue. It just may be a fluke. I don't think I'd sell it so quickly. As for dry firing it, you can turn the safety on or you can use a spent 22 casing in the chamber so the firing pin doesn't break.

Move back, LOL, I'm sorry no offence on the dry fire, as most center fire pistols it wont bother, but on a rimfire the broken firering pin is something that could happen, and I moved here from upstate NY in the early 80s, no way I could have the collection I have when I was living there...........on your 22, at this point you should probably call Walther or S&W and tell them what happened, and ask whats involved with sending the pistol in for repair, I dont know each brands procedure for returning firearms for repair, as I do 99% of my own stuff,

Oh I forgot, if you do end up selling or trading, look at a Bersa Thunder 22, got one a couple months ago, and its the first 22 semi auto I have had that I'm satisfided with right off the bat, absolutly no issues,

I give you $100 for the pistol & parts. You can ship directly to me, an FFL. Email if interested.

However, I will repair the arm and ad it to my personal collection, (or that of my son).

Call the number on the Warranty page. Shipping for repair and back will not require help from FFL. If you'd prefer to use an FFL, you'll pay for the service/transfer fee.

Good Luck.

I called smith and wesson they are sending me a shipping label. The customer service guy said it would take two weeks to repair..He also seemed very amazed that the firing pin broke. He said,"Wow, that's never happened.Send it in and we'll fix it for you." So now I play the waiting game..

Well I got my gun back yesterday from smith and wesson they replaced the firing pin.But now the magazines are hard as hell to put in and take out...Anyone ever had this problem? I can't seem to fix it everything is in place..I mean it's a pretty simple design..

See if you can determine what exactly may be hanging up the mags, we have had two Walthers, a Bersa, two Smiths, never had a mag problem, may just be a burr inside the magwell, if cant find anything, call Walther back, or trade gun, ???????????????

Goto their website, fill out an online request. They mail you a shipping label, you send it to them.

I got mine back in about 2 weeks.

Wow, another reason to wear safety glasses I guess. I didnt see this until today, I actually have a few spare parts, firing pin included, since I'm one of those do it yourself people. Not that it helps you now...
