Walmart

Hello everyone. I just wanted to inform you guys that, walmart in North Carolina does not sell ammo past 10pm. So, here is the story!

I worked all day today, got off at 9:45 pm. Drove to walmart with the intent in purchasing a box of .45, a box of 9mm, and a box of 380 (for the wife). I have big plans of going to the range tomorrow... I get in walmart, and this is a small town anyways, There is no one in the sporting goods section. So I walk all the way back up to the service desk. When I get to the service desk, I nicely ask the clerk who can unlock the ammo case for me because I would like to purchase some ammo. She says ok and proceeds to ask into her walkie talkie who can unlock the case for me, and informs me to walk back to the sporting goods section and someone will be with me in a few moments. I get back to the sporting goods section, and have already picked out everything I would like to buy. Just a few minutes go by, and the manager comes stolling over. He proceeds to inform me that Walmart does not sell ammo/guns/hunting permits past 10pm because the sporting goods register is closed. I explained my story that I had litterally just got off of work, and he said that the sporting goods register was closed so no transactions could be done there. I said OK, will you carry the ammo to the front for me and Ill just purchase it from the front register that is open, because I have other shopping to do also. He said he can not do that because the walmart policy is nothing sold past 10pm. I very nicely asked him what the difference between 9pm and 10pm was, and he said there was no difference. I said that is correct, so why can you not sell me any ammo? He got mad and walked away.... So told him I wouldnt be doing any shopping there anymore, and I would inform all of my hunting/range shooting friends that walmart is not very serious about selling ammo. Sorry if this came off as a rant (it kind of is). Maybe someone will find this useful and learn from my mistakes. Hope you all stay safe out there!!!

I don't shop Walmart. I don't like the way their employee policies and the history they have with the poor treatment of them.

I was just at Walmart earlier today buying ammo and they had a sign stating that they do not sell firearms after 10 pm or on Christmas day. It was in Missouri.
My brother had the same problem except he got there at 9:30 and it took them 40 minutes to get someone to help him. After they paged someone several times the manager came back to tell them that they do not sell ammo after 10 pm. He explained to the manager that he was there before 10 pm but they still would not sell it to him.

Ya I am considering a ban on walmart. It just really irritated me. Here I am, a ccw carrying citizen, even nice enough to leave my handgun in the truck before going into the store. Its really sad. Welcome to walmart, where we will not sell what you need past a certian time.....

If it is their policy, then so be it. However, It sounds to me like the policy was not the problem, but rather the lack of customer service, as you were in the store trying to buy ammo well before their deadline. Wal-Mart pays low wages, which in turn produces employees who really don't care, which equals crappy service. But what amazes me about this equation, is that Wal-Mart is the world's largest retailer. Sad, truly sad.

Wal-mart is a private business, and it is well within their rights to determine what time they want to stop selling a particular product. In some jurisdictions alcohol sales is regulated by state or local laws. In order to ensure compliance with the law, many places choose to stop selling alcohol well before the time allowed by law. The business has a right to do this.

You are not afforded a special right to purchase ammo whenever it is convenient or possible for you. Plan ahead and purchase on your day off or well ahead of the time you plan on going to the range. Suppose they were out of stock. You would then have to shop at a different store. Another consideration is how early are you going to the range? Most ranges I have shot at open around 9am. If I recall correctly, the sporting goods department at most Wal-mart stores is staffed from 7am or 8am. Pick up the ammo on the way to the range.

Arguing with the store manager won't get you the desired result and will make you look bad as a gun owner. Your remark about being "nice enough to leave my handgun in the truck...." makes no sense. First of all, if you're CCing, it wouldn't matter because nobody will know unless you needed to use your firearm. Second, Wal-mart is one of the most "firearms friendly" retailers out there. Their corporate policy is to allow customers to carry as long as they're in compliance with state and local laws.

If you feel that strongly about Wal-mart, then shop someplace else. That is your right. Don't bash a retailer because they have a policy that you don't like, especially when the hassle could have been avoided had you planned better on your part.

I live in ky, I've bought ammo after midnight before... Maybe a regional thing?

Quite possible. I've run into situations in various states where the guns and ammo were locked down late at night. I recall purchasing ammo in UT and NV Wal-mart stores at some weird hours without issues, however discovered all of the ammo locked down in MO and CO Wal-mart stores on a late night visit (well after 10pm).

Even if I don't plan on shooting I always buy a few boxes when I see them. That way if my wife or buddies wanna go shoot all I gotta say is, "Let's roll."
Minus the ammo reserved for the zombie invasion.

Welcome to America

Freedom of Choice

They can choose not to sell

And

You can choose not to buy!

What a Country!!!

I'm not really defending Walmart, but let's think and get off our high horses with our nose up in the air a moment. They have fewer staff working late hours, and perhaps no one who is trained to deal with the gun sales. Anyway, it is a corporate policy so why rag the poor employee who can't change it and who, at his wages, COULD CARE LESS when you threaten to shop somewhere else. And when you shop somewhere else AFTER 10:00PM - what gun stores are even open that late? Mighty few I bet. So why yell at Walmart when noone else is even open? Boo-hoo they didn't immediately change a corporate policy and give you what you. Kind of makes me think of the kid in the store who screams 'cause his mommy won't buy the candy NOW!

While having a full understanding of the OP's frustration with this issue, my advice is to ALWAYS keep enough ammo on hand for emergencies. When ever there is no ammo in the stock pile, it's an emergency. 500 round minimum!

Why in the world would you "leave your handgun in the truck"? :fie:

If you would have been mugged in the parking lot your sidearm would have been completely useless! :big_boss:

I tend to agree with the posters who suggest that Walmart is not anti-gun as much as they are anti-"hiring people with more than two brain cells to rub together". Case in point: I recently went to the sporting goods section of my local Wally World, with the intention of buying some 9mm ammo to take to the shooting range. Of course, said ammo resides in locked display case, so I have to locate a Walmartian to open it to make my purchase. I piddle around for a few minutes waiting for someone to come around. I could certainly go looking for someone, but I'm not in any particular hurry so I look around a bit. The back side of the counter is an open ended area which actually is another aisle of sporting goods type stuff so I wander in to that area, where of course....wait for it...whomever had been stocking the ammo the last time it was stocked, left 5 or 6 cases of ammunition right there in the middle of the aisle unlocked, and out in the open...sheer genius....

Why in heck did you leave your gun in the truck to go into Wal Mart?!?!!!!! And apparantly after 10:00pm?!?!!!

I've bought ammo at all hours at Wal~Marts in Idaho. I agree that a business has the right to set their own policies. Normally policies of certain products such as ammo, firearms, or alcohol are formed in effort to comply with local laws.
I have worked in loss prevention at both Kmart and Wal~Mart and can affirm that there policies are directly linked to governmental regulation. They will often adopt policies that are a little stronger than local law. Such as Wal~Marts policy to conduct the Brady law FBI Check for all firearms purchases even though Idaho law makes it un-necessary for concealed license carriers.

getting angry and arguing with a store employee about a policy he has no choice but to comply with simply displays a lack of personal civility and makes me wonder if a person of such temperament should be carrying pointy stick let alone a firearm. Calm down man!

He wasn't carrying a firearm! HE LEFT IT IN THE TRUCK! :nono:

I know. I thought you made him feel bad enough about that.

Besides isn't a "Ban" a legal action a government takes?
Maybe he meant a "boycott". Fat chance of that hurting Wal~Mart, they're too big to fail.
