Warning! Rant ahead:
Ugh. This is the second time I've run into this issue in Austin, TX. Wally World decides to refuse ammo sale "after dark".
First time was Parmer & IH-35 location, after 7:00 PM (during the summer, daylight hours), young kid working at the ammo counter (wusses :cray: can't call it a gun counter if there are no guns in it, can they now
), I was in a hurry so I just leave (& leave the other items I was going to purchase), but happened to be back in the same store 2 days later, at least an hour later than before, closer to 9:00 PM, they tried the same deal, I ask for a manager because I know for a fact it is NOT a store policy (corporate at least) & he comes over & sold it no problem.
Well, tonight, I happen to be Christmas shopping late, around 1:00 AM at the 183 (Research) & 620 location, & the ammo counter was "closed" so I ask for a manager, who comes over & flat out refuses to sell it, saying she could lose her job, she did not think it would ring up when scanned (coded not to sell like alcohol after hours), tried to say it was a federal law, etc. As I was in no hurry at all, & her excuses simply amused me, I advised her it was not a state or federal law, & asked her to display to me any store policy to the effect of no sales after any specific time, since she did not even know what "time" she was enforcing, "10:00 or 11:00 PM", she responded by desperately shuffling papers around the counter looking for a policy while coming up with one excuse after another, pointed to the posted hours for purchase of hunting license stamps, stated she could unlock the case but it wouldn't scan, never produced any policy, & even admitted that the shotgun ammo outside of the locked case did not make sense with the policy in mind. :to_pick_ones_nose:
I left all the items I had in hand, & the $200.00 business I had planned to spend there that evening on the shelf.
After I get home, I call another location in Georgetown & speak with a manager who confirms with the store manager that it is NOT a store policy, & they sell it all the time. Very courteous, they can have my business in the future. Worth the drive. Then I call the night manager at the location on 183 & 620, he advised it is NOT a store policy, but a case by case basis, after 10:00 PM. Well, I understand profiling, but I was not drunken, I was dressed better than half the clientele in his store at the time (not hard to do at Wal-Mart mind you), & I wasn't buyin' 9, or evil black rifle rounds either (oh heavens-to-Betsy!!!). He stated he declined to sell some 9mm on a couple occasions recently (like he felt that round is only for 'bangers, just who does he think he is protecting? Is he racist?), & he would educate his employee, but that in the future, one could just get the store/shift manager & they can get it taken care of.
Unless it's NINE. mm or O'Clock. :to_pick_ones_nose::to_pick_ones_nose:
Moral of the story? I guess if you happen to need to get shopping done when it is convenient, & you want the volume price they can (sometimes) offer, you need to ask a store or shift manger for permission & to hold your hand, because underling managers & store associates just can't be trusted to make the decision to sell you something lawful, for a constitutionally protected activity. What if I was the governor & needed ammo for a late night/early morning JOG!?!?!?
Sheesh.
