Wal-Mart ammo after dark...

Warning! Rant ahead:
Ugh. This is the second time I've run into this issue in Austin, TX. Wally World decides to refuse ammo sale "after dark".
First time was Parmer & IH-35 location, after 7:00 PM (during the summer, daylight hours), young kid working at the ammo counter (wusses :cray: can't call it a gun counter if there are no guns in it, can they now ), I was in a hurry so I just leave (& leave the other items I was going to purchase), but happened to be back in the same store 2 days later, at least an hour later than before, closer to 9:00 PM, they tried the same deal, I ask for a manager because I know for a fact it is NOT a store policy (corporate at least) & he comes over & sold it no problem.
Well, tonight, I happen to be Christmas shopping late, around 1:00 AM at the 183 (Research) & 620 location, & the ammo counter was "closed" so I ask for a manager, who comes over & flat out refuses to sell it, saying she could lose her job, she did not think it would ring up when scanned (coded not to sell like alcohol after hours), tried to say it was a federal law, etc. As I was in no hurry at all, & her excuses simply amused me, I advised her it was not a state or federal law, & asked her to display to me any store policy to the effect of no sales after any specific time, since she did not even know what "time" she was enforcing, "10:00 or 11:00 PM", she responded by desperately shuffling papers around the counter looking for a policy while coming up with one excuse after another, pointed to the posted hours for purchase of hunting license stamps, stated she could unlock the case but it wouldn't scan, never produced any policy, & even admitted that the shotgun ammo outside of the locked case did not make sense with the policy in mind. :to_pick_ones_nose:
I left all the items I had in hand, & the $200.00 business I had planned to spend there that evening on the shelf.
After I get home, I call another location in Georgetown & speak with a manager who confirms with the store manager that it is NOT a store policy, & they sell it all the time. Very courteous, they can have my business in the future. Worth the drive. Then I call the night manager at the location on 183 & 620, he advised it is NOT a store policy, but a case by case basis, after 10:00 PM. Well, I understand profiling, but I was not drunken, I was dressed better than half the clientele in his store at the time (not hard to do at Wal-Mart mind you), & I wasn't buyin' 9, or evil black rifle rounds either (oh heavens-to-Betsy!!!). He stated he declined to sell some 9mm on a couple occasions recently (like he felt that round is only for 'bangers, just who does he think he is protecting? Is he racist?), & he would educate his employee, but that in the future, one could just get the store/shift manager & they can get it taken care of.
Unless it's NINE. mm or O'Clock. :to_pick_ones_nose::to_pick_ones_nose:
Moral of the story? I guess if you happen to need to get shopping done when it is convenient, & you want the volume price they can (sometimes) offer, you need to ask a store or shift manger for permission & to hold your hand, because underling managers & store associates just can't be trusted to make the decision to sell you something lawful, for a constitutionally protected activity. What if I was the governor & needed ammo for a late night/early morning JOG!?!?!?
Sheesh.

Wally World a great place to go, but glad I have a Cabela's within a 30 minute drive. Plenty of ammo, all calibers and BETTER prices than WalMart. Plus, no limits like at Bass Pro and some other WalMarts.

My local Wal-Mart will sell me ammunition after midnight, as it is a 24 hour store. They are now better stocked, as I think I was able to buy available ammo from that particular store once or twice in 2009 and never saw .380 then! I'm not desperate enough to find out when they stock it and wait in a line for it. It is sometimes a wait for the mamager to get the ammunition, but thank them for their time and effort.

Just to make a comparison, this particular store sold me ammo after midnight, but would not sell me tank fish after midnight. I just thought that was a peculiar observation and comparison. Wal-Marts in New Jersekstan prohibit the sale of ammunition. And cigarettes.

My local is also 24 hours...but will not sell ammo late. Heck, not just ammo. I went in about 1030pm to buy a swiss army knife...those are locked down too..."Sorry, the dept keys are already locked up for the night."

Might be worth contacting WalMart Corporate and let them know what's happening and see what their response is.. I'd let them know about leaving $XXX.XX dollars of merchandise on the counter each time it happened...

Cabelas

It warmed my heart to go into Cabelas and see it packed to the brim with people purchasing ammo, guns and other outdoor goods WAAAAAY after dark. Oh, and the gun counter guy was a hoot to talk to, as we got a good group discussion going about the 2nd ammendment. Think a group of guys and gals would strike up a conversation to help a little old lady who just got her CCW permit find the right self defense weapon in Wally World??? NOT.

Just came from my Walmart...seems that they reduced their ammo from a 12 foot long case down to a 6 foot long case....which of course made it look full....:fie:

Hoot, I tryed something like that and got nowhere, truth is upper management couldn't care less about what go's on at the retail level as lond as the bucks keep rollin in:angry:

Most of the Walmarts around here close the Sporting Goods counter down at 9pm. When it closes you can't buy firearms or ammo.

Northeast Texas Walmarts

While I have not purchased ammo from Walmart in the last few months, their policy (even at 24 hour stores) was (and probably still is) no ammo purchases after 9 pm.

I like to buy the Winchester 9mm luger and 380 at Meijer "love Meijer", really good deal on ammo that has gone bang for me everytime. Of course that may have something to do with owning/shooting Glocks.

Rest assured. When China starts shipping cheap crap ammo here by the container load, Walyworld will be pleased to sell it 24/7.

I went on a similar rant last year when they wouldn't do anything for me on a pair of (and I paid a lot of money) hunting boots which literally fell apart. They said I'd had them over a year, and I explained yes, but I only wear them about five days and packed them away clean and dry. I used to stock pile ammo from there because it was cheap, but now their prices are stupid too.

I NEVER go there now unless there's no logical alternative. I don't know but I must have missed the part where China became our friend. Some things I seem to really cherish odd as it may sound. My Dodge truck, 172K miles and runs like NEW, my Martin guitar, (my dads was from 1938) Zippo lighter, Redfield rifle scope, and ALL of my guns. Things made in America I know will outlive me and be passed on to people who will cherish them too.

WalMart

Our local WalMart here in Fairbanks Alaska has never given me any problem, however, be prepared to be on "candid Camera." :pleasantry:

I quit shopping at WAL-MART since they announced their "partnership" with the government on the "If you see something tell someone" program. Not because I have anything to hide but asking other shoppers to spy on each other is a bit much, they already have cameras everywhere. All in the name of "protecting" me.

Bottom line: I refuse to shop where others are encouraged to spy on me and cameras rule. I am a citizen not a suspect, I have committed no crime. I'll spend MY MONEY elsewhere, they are not doing me any favors by letting me walk through their doors.

It's supply and demand. When Wal-Mart changes their ways of "doing business" then I may consider shopping there.

Have you seen the "Shoppers of Wal-Mart" photos on the internet? I have and these peoples faces are being posted all over the world. Where they asked for their approval to post these photos? Is that what they mean by "protection?"

the only time i have ever had a hard time buying ammo at walmart was my first time buying ammo while open carrying. the guy behind the counter was a jack@$$ towards me and refused to sell it to me because he felt uncomfortable giving me ammo while I had a gun. (like I was going to load my gun with this ammo and go shoot the place up, even tho my gun was already loaded.) he said he was calling the cops because open carrying was illegal. (its not here in NC, has never been) he never once told me to leave so i stayed and waited for the cops, but they never came, instead a manager who was also my friend came and told this guy he was wrong and to sell me the ammo. never had a problem since.

The walmart up here will sell anytime, Ive never had an issue, then again, most the time I just go there to get my .22 ammo because they have the large value packs, wont EVER buy 40 cal ammo there being they want 70.00 for 100 rounds where I can get 100 rounds for less than 50 else where.
Stupid policy in some stores prevent them to sell to either anyone openly carrying, suspected of concealed carry, and other times, just because they heard from someone some where they cant sell after a certian time...Never heard that one before, but Im glad you had to brass ones to confront her.

Walmart and guns

I did not realize that Wallyworld quit selling guns. Hmmmm The only thing I have ever looked for is 9mm rounds for my ruger and they are ALWAYS sold out. It is apparent to me that they do not have any intentions of selling anything other than hunting gear so I just go to one of the local gun shops for what I need.
