I just received my vote no for issue 2 advertisement in the mail.
It said, "issue 2 takes away the voice of the teacher to negotiate for things that keep our children safe and successful".
For the life of me I don't understand how bankrupting our schools, raising our taxes, receiving more vacation days, less time in the classroom, earlier and better retirement benefits, do anything to help the children. It does ask them to pay 15% into their own benefit plan which some pay nothing in to, and then the taxpayers are asked to bail out their pension plan, why?
It says, "Teachers know best what each student needs to succeed".
What happened to parents know best? The liberal agenda in our classrooms are what got us to where we are now. What children needed to succeed at one time was available in our classrooms, self worth, morality, the true history of our great nation, along with Reading, Writing , and Arithmetic.
It says, "It could force teachers to do even more standardized testing".
What is wrong with that, it would show what teachers actually teach and what the children actually retain, that would be a basis for merit pay and not just pay increases due to longevity in the system.
It says, " it could mean more teacher layoffs including many of our best teachers".
I really doubt our best teachers will get laid off, it may remove some of the dead wood and let those that are really the best move forward.
As far as police and firemen on issue 2 , I respect and appreciate their sacrifices for us. Issue 2 Only asks them to pay at least 15 percent of their health insurance, "less" than half of what private sector workers are paying on average. It ties compensation to quality of work rather than seniority, just like private sector employees. It does preserve collective bargaining, for safety issues.
I want our schools, and our cities to be able to continue to provide excellent service for their citizens, but if the demands of public sector unions continue to escalate we will have neither safety, education, nor protection.
Please Vote "Yes" on Issue 2 and Issue 3
