Virginia is home to more fully automatic machine guns than any other state in the nation, with Maryland following a close fifth.

According to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, there were 30,220 registered machine guns in Virginia, more than the populous states of Florida with 29,128, California with 28,774 and Texas with 28,690.

Maryland has 23,709 registered machine guns. The District of Columbia has 4,278 machine guns, ranking it 23rd.

Together, nearly one in eight of all the nation's 488,065 legally owned machine guns can be found in Virginia, Maryland and the District.

But we are talking the legally registered. I can't believe any firearms are in Maryland let alone full auto as anal as they are. We have to look though at what surrounds DC. Loads of politicians and other govt employees live in the DC metro area which extends well into northern VA and MD. There are many foreign dignitaries too that have homes in the area and are protected by trained pro's with automatic weapons. It's ok for them to have MGs but not us right? Gotta love double standards.

This list is for LE's and such not just private citizen ownership. Local LE's have to register there NFA weapons to. Fed's depending on agency do not.
