Can't make this stuff up. This is the molding of our future citizens into good little servants.

wow lol alot of us in grade school made spit balls and shot em through a straw at the teacher when she had her back turned heheh we got reprimanded and a warning but never suspended ffs
and the bathroom ceiling had all kinds of spitballs stuck on them too .....till the janitor made an announcement and that pretty much stopped that but no one was suspended or even charged with assault for spitballin' heheh
we were threatened with suspension and that was enough to stop us back in that day and time

"They were asking him to stop, he replied, 'No.' When they asked him, 'Why are you doing this?' he said, 'because I want to,'"

That alone should've been enough. No sense of respect, or common courtesy, then crying foul when someone called his bluff.

You also missed the part that this kid was in jROTC, or that his father was former Navy Seabee and Marine officer. if ANY kid should have known about respect its this one. is this the kind of kid you want leading troops in the next war?

Just read about this. I used to live in Richmond and traveled through this area quite often. The Lawyer is right, this is whats wrong with our society today! Ridiculous story

This is just another example of how ridiculous our public school system has become. What this student did was wrong, but it was a normal teenage prank. In-school detention would be much more reasonable. Our Country is going down fast by trying to be politically correct. This is way over the top!

i can see grade schoolers doing that but teens should know better imo
we done this kind of thing in grade school not high school.
in high school we got high and cut classes not play with spitballs
rotflmao

no, the country is going down because its growing up a bunch of characterless kids where 'no child is left behind' and actions have no consequences other than a slap on the wrist. then they grow up into businessmen who torment kids and run for president, or run banks into the ground while collecting 6 figure bonuses while the rest of us bail them out.

if this kid gets away with this, it will only reinforce his subconscious logic that he can do whatever he wants as long as he can get away with it, or has good lawyers if he doesn't get away with it.

It doesn't appear that anyone here thinks what he did was right; rather, that the punishment does not fit the actions. Yes, he was wrong to do what he did, and would have been wrong to continue doing it. However, he apparently only hit three people, none of whom he injured (a "welt" is NOT an injury). For that he gets kicked out of school for an extended length of time, and faces criminal charges? That's sortalike using an anvil and sledgehammer to kill a fly, isn't it? Yes, he did something wrong, although calling the equipment he used to do it a "weapon" is ludicrous. Yes, he should be punished for doing it. However, the punishment recommended is far in excess of the severity of the misdeed.

Actions should have consequences, but not this type of consequence. The consequence should be in line with the action, not so far exceeding the action that there appears to be no connection. Without consequences, "...they grow up into businessmen who torment kids..." but with outrageously excessive consequences they grow up to be criminals, or run for public office and then abuse the privileges of that office.

i think that saying "because I want to" shows lack of mental maturity. all the more reason to hold him back a year, in which time he hopefully catches up to his peers mentally and can continue on whatever course he chooses.

the 'criminal' record gets wiped at 18 anyway, so why cry about that.

This isn't about shooting spitwads, this is about getting someone in the system so they are easier victims of searches and seizures in the future because of their "record". Whoever thinks juvenile convictions mean nothing is more than naive.

Good thing he didn't shoot a spitwad at his brother or sister. A business partner of mine got turned down on a gun purchase a little over a year ago for the first time in his life because of the only arrest he has ever had, at age 16 for fighting with his own brother. Domestic violence.

He was told to turn in the rest of his weapons he's had for years. This happened in Denver.

Another human being stripped of his rights for life.

Mission accomplished liberals. (and you "conservatives" who think there should be a "little" restriction on human rights of self defense - you are just as complicit in this)

This country is falling apart. There are much more important things for educators to spend my money on.

I can't think of a kid who didn't do something similar. I was a rotten little ba$tard growing up. Mischief was my middle name. Never anything harmful. My father was a grad of the U.S. Naval Academy so the same could be said about me and respect. My guidance counselor said I'll never amount to anything. Today I have an Ivy league college degree. I'd like to see his face if he knew that.

Those who feel bullied by such actions have a sad awakening coming in adult life. We play for keeps. We keep score. We don't employ those without a thick skin. Squeeky wheels don't get oiled, they get replaced. Cry-babies don't get a hug, they get tossed.

I remember in elementary school, George Washington's portrait high up on the wall had 3 spit balls embedded close to his nose.

This behavior was no longer tolerated in middle or high school however. It would have gotten you suspended by that age.

Looks like the high school juvie was a problem kid anyway, and the assault charge was just a way to get him into juvenile detention and lock up.

These little disruptive freaks who cannot concentrate on school work in school have bigger problems that should not interfere with the other kids who are trying to do their jobs of learning their lessons to get ready for the real world of work and earnings.

Meanwhile 87 rapists, 31 pedophiles, 28 arsonists, 112 grand theft larcenists and 209 illegal Mexican drug dealers were let out on good behavior last month. Should some school authority figures be getting their heads kicked in for non use of common sense? I say a resounding hell yeah!

You are correct there that long ago in a galaxy far away students had enough respect for teachers, administrators and their parents to stop when threatened with suspension or some other punishment. Now not only do they not care about the respect they dare you to take any action and then file a lawsuit or take it to the facebook jury and hope they can get some attention to show that they may not be right but that they can win anyway. As some have said he sounds like he has a great future in politics and possibly be the next John Edwards. As the jury has said I don't know that Edwards broke any laws. But as I say the SOB should be hung by his pinkie toes in a dungeon until he rots away on general principles.

There are no rules. if this kid would have got his a%& beat the first two times it might not have happened a third. but no these liberal f#*"'s don't want there kids touched but fail to regulate it themselves. Well now he knows. Failure to respect the rules has an end result.
