Virginia non resident permit. Sounds too good to be true

I found a company online that administers the online exam and class for the Virginia state ccw license. I live in Texas and am wondering if anyone else has gotten their license like that? It saves about $100 doing it through Virgina (non resident) but it sounds too good to be true.

Well, the Non-resident cost for a VA permit is $100 as is so unless you have to pay for a class I don't see how you're saving money.

That's the link to it. If you have done any NRA pistol course and still have the original certificate you can just make a copy and send that, no need to do another class.

You should apply for a Florida non-resident. It costs $125.00 but is good for 7 years and you will be legal in 37 states.

I guess I would look to confirm which states accept a Virgina CCW permit.
I took my class at Cabelas near Olympia, WA. The instructor's associates put together the package to apply for Florida, Utah and Oregon.
The class was a C note then I sent off to each state the fee with the package form, Pictures and prints (if I remember correctly at least $100 each to Utah and Florida)
Oregon you must come in to talk with the LE official. Of course that is in addition to the requirement to maintain my Washington resident CCW.
Now my wife wants her non resident CCW how is Arizona's anyone have it?
Not cheap but necessary.

In Texas you take a class for a $100 and then pay another $140 for the license not including prints and notary. Virginia from what I'm understanding is $100 for the license plus prints and notary. The online exam is $40 but right now one of the companies is running a special of $20. Virginia's license lasts a year longer than Texas as well. There are quite a few states that accept Virginia's permit. So I could get it in Texas but if I could save a $100 I might as well.

So Fred why did you apply to Florida, Utah and Oregon? Is the license for Washington not good in those states?

I have my Virginia non-resident license that I received after taking the online exam you are talking about.
The exam is fairly easy and they give you 4 tries to pass it. Then after you pass and print out your certificate
you write to an address they give you for a non-resident permit. VA sends you a kit which includes a
fingerprint card and you fill out their form, send in the fingerprints, form, certificate from online, and $100.
Takes about 4 to 8 weeks to get your permit.

The permit is good in 26 states I believe.

AZ is easy. Completely thru the mail, a copy of any of your existing permits that required training to get will suffice for the AZ training requirement, $60. Prints are required but it's not necessary for them to be done by LEA. Reciprocity is equivalent to FL when it comes to # of states.

If you've already taken a class for TX there is a good chance it will suffice to VA's requirement.

The applicant shall demonstrate competence with a handgun by one of the following:

• Completing a hunter education or hunter safety course approved by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries or a similar agency of another state.
• Completing any National Rifle Association firearms safety or training course.
• Completing any firearms safety or training course or class available to the general public offered by a law-enforcement agency, junior college, college, or private or public institution or organization or firearms training school utilizing instructors certified by the National Rifle Association or the Department of Criminal Justice Services or a similar agency of another state.
• Completing any law-enforcement firearms safety or training course or class offered for security guards, investigators, special deputies, or any division or subdivision of law enforcement or security enforcement.
• Presenting evidence of equivalent experience with a firearm through participation in organized shooting competition approved by the Department of State Police or current military service or proof of an honorable discharge from any branch of the armed services.
• Obtaining or previously having held a license to carry a firearm in this Commonwealth or a locality thereof, unless such license has been revoked for cause.
• Completing any firearms training or safety course or class, including an electronic, video, or on-line course, conducted by a state-certified or National Rifle Association-certified firearms instructor.
• Completing any governmental police agency firearms training course and qualifying to carry a firearm in the course of normal police duties.
• Completing any other firearms training that the Virginia Department of State Police deems adequate.

I have an Arizona Non Resident and Florida Non Resident CCW Permits. Arizona, accepted my Florida License as proof of Training and with two sets of Finger prints and a $60.00 Money Order. Arizona require the Training to be by a Registered NRA Instructor, while Florida does not. I needed the Arizona License to have the Reciprocity of Wisconsin. Wisconsin does not accept Florida in reciprocity. I will really like it when we have CCW in Illinois and 50 State Reciprocity.

I am sorry but those training requirements ... they are not worth much and should not keep any State from recognizing other permits. Just saying.

I will have to look into the VA non res permit myself now, I still have a few spots not covered ;-)

The only cons with a Virginia permit is the higher price, and that they want new fingerprints every 5 years. The fingerprints have to be done by law enforcement too. It's not a bad deal, it's just that Arizona, Utah, and Florida cover more states for about the same price or less.
