Licensing, to be renewed every five years with full background checks and mental health screenings, is the first step. Adding a checkbox to a driver's license and another form would make this easy to implement. My driver's license tells folks that I am a donor; it could very easily also indicate whether or not I am a gun owner or authorized to carry concealed firearms.

Before you tell me how I am violating your rights by proposing a record of gun owners, note that the constitution does not say that you have the right to bear arms and not tell anyone. We regulate chemicals, elevators, airplanes, and financial transactions—and none of those are specifically designed to kill anyone.

The next step is requiring 40 hours of training prior to license approval. I’m here to tell you that there is little value to having a firearm if one is cannot employ it tactically. I’m not saying we need owners to be trained to the level of Navy SEALs or SWAT teams, but if you claim to want these weapons to protect your home, then you should at least have a baseline knowledge. The training hours should jump to 80 hours for a concealed carry permit. This training should be done by the government to ensure consistency and quality control and should be covered by the tax on ammunition.

And finally, to pay for the licensing process and training as well as the background and mental health screenings, we can add a modest tax to ammunition sales (think five to ten cents per round—a manageable amount). This way, the costs are spread amongst those who wish to own guns.

Very obvious to me from reading the entire article that this guy really DOESN'T have a clue what is at stake here; he has bought lock, stock, and barrel into the cooked data put forward by Brady, Bloomberg and the other gun grabbers. To cover the cost of training (to be provided by the government), he proposes TWO taxes on ammo - one $.05/round tax to cover background and mental health screenings, and another, UNSTIPULATED tax to cover required licensure training (firearms ownership and carry) - driving up the cost of ammo.

As a veteran myself, I always say that we should thank veterans, but not necessarily believe everything they say. Even Jimmy Carter is a veteran, and look at the crap he spews.

People tend to use veteran status to lend credibility to whatever they are promoting/saying/doing. "I'm a veteran so you should take my word for it that....."

As a Veteran of the Air Force, I agree...take my word for it! Also, that Navy weapons instructor is a Bozo...take my word on that too (because I'm a Vet).

I'm a vet., and I'm God. There, I fixed his post for him, and didn't have to use my usual 6 or 7 page tome to do it!

I think a swing in the other direction like Vermont or Alaska is a far better direction to go in. For folks breaking laws with guns, off with the hand. A few more stumps on certain people would lower the crime rates. No need to tax stumps.

I'd like to see equal justice for rapists. How's it hangin', stumpy?

I have three words for this man.

Go **** Yourself.

I'll let you all fill in the stars.

Let me see, what could he have possibly meant by "Go **** yourself?" I'm having to guess at the sentiment but it sounds right to me!

" This training should be done by the government to ensure consistency and quality control "

Really? This is what is called a self defeating argument.

The issue is some folks in the military and even retired have the mindset they should regulate the outside world as if it were also the military. My brother is just like this (he's a lifer). I left the military and never felt the regulations on firearms were a good thing for the most part.

We don't need some a s s h o l e from the military thinking he may give orders to the civilian population.

We're not their damned recruits.

They have three choices:

1. Go pound sand.
2. Get over it.
3. Or both.

I used the above years ago on a recent retiree, along with the option to hit the door he came-in. He demanded to jump to the head of the line, (thinking he was entitled) on a commercial two-way radio repair. He waited until the customers' units ahead of him were repaired...

Sometimes, it takes getting in the D Head's face. They are shocked when civilians treat them like their DI or CO.

I honor our military heroes, have visited the Vietnam memorial wall, and Arlington Cemetery, and other monuments to our military and fallen heroes (I lived there). I have respect for those men and women, and present men and women who have given life and limb to serve.

Things have changed, and my blood boils whenever military arrogance is displayed in civilian life.
