My wife and I are planning a road trip from Texas to CA and NV which will involve some camping, etc. Will we be in compliance with the law if my handgun is in a lock box in a storage compartment, unloaded, in the back of my van? Both wife and I are chl holders.

Yes. In addition your texas permit is honored by New Mexico and Arizona so you can carry concealed or openly on your person, inside or outside your vehicle. (You could do that in AZ even without your permit.)

Nevada is an open carry state, even though they do not honor your texas permit. You may open carry in Nevada, on your person, outside your vehicle. You can transport your gun located anywhere in your vehicle in Nevada except for concealed on your person. In NM, AZ, and NV your gun may remain loaded.

The only state that requires unloaded and in a locked container is CA. Contrary to what some people will try to tell you, it is NOT required to separate the ammo/magazines from the gun in California (just not IN the gun!). Also, no magazines over 10 round capacity in CA.

If you are going up through Utah, Utah also honors the Texas permit, so concealed/open carry is OK in Utah as well, inside and outside your vehicle.
