Vacation In California

Hi folks, simple question here I'm sure. Me and my family are heading to california in april for vacation, we're coming from Texas. I noticed on the map that I can go as far as AZ with my CCW permit but Cali doesn't honor it. Should I just leave it at home and ( feel naked and unprotected ), or can I just simply unload it, keep ammo seperate and keep it in the gun bag in the back of the jeep once in Cali? Will I run into any issues once in Cali, say for some reason I may get pulled over? From what I last read I know Cali doesn't allow 10+ mags, so that shouldn't be problem with my PT-145 if I'm able to bring it in the state. We're driving there, so I just wanted to take it and keep us safe on the road 'till we get there.

I do pray for a National Carry Law.

i dont know the law in this but i lived in california for six years, big state...90% of the state no real threat but things have changed and desperate people have been doing a lot of bad stuff...be aware and maybe arm you self with legal pepper sray or something that will provide a window of time to retrive your firearm. enjoy

You can carry your firearm in your vehical. Here is the law according to the state website:

Traveling with Firearms in California

HANDGUNS

California Penal Code section 12025 does not prevent a citizen of the United States over 18 years of age who is not lawfully prohibited from firearm possession, and who resides or is temporarily in California, from transporting by motor vehicle any pistol, revolver, or other firearm capable of being concealed upon the person provided the firearm is unloaded and stored in a locked container.

The term "locked container" means a secure container which is fully enclosed and locked by a padlock, key lock, combination lock, or similar locking device. This includes the trunk of a motor vehicle, but does not include the utility or glove compartment. For more information, refer to California Penal Code Section 12026.1.

Californias' harsh and repressive firearms laws are one of the main reasons why I moved. The post about how to carry in California is correct. Also the idea of pepper spray is good. You might write the California department of tourism of whatever the state agency is called and let your displeasure known about the gun laws and the next vacation will be spent somewhere else. Will it do any good? If enough people say something mabye.

I do not spend my money in any state I cannot protect myself in, as such enjoy AZ and NM on trip. My two older sons live in CA when we visit they pick up the tab I carry in a quick release lock box with mag on hip.

I would also check out a C2 Taser. Same brand of technology the police use. But theirs are mounted in a handgun like casing. They are legal in California (surprising) and you do not need a permit to carry one. TASER - Home.

As far as I know, you can open carry an unloaded firearm (you can keep the clip in your pocket or elsewhere on your body). You might want to double-check the legalities of this (don't completely take my word for it), and even if you did do this you might get harassed by law enforcement. But the last time I checked, unloaded open carry without a license is legal in California.

You can not legally carry pepper spray in California or a baton Without getting training from the state. Along with your gun needing to have a 10 round magazine I would make sure it is on California's list of state approved guns before taking it there.

Hi. Sorry to forgo the usual forum intro protocol (my first post), but I wanted to respond to this one. 12401 PC places pepper spray under the umbrella classification of "tear gas." Sections 12403.7 and 22810 deal with who may use it (adults, not convicted of felony etc.), under what circumstances it may be used legally (self defense), and other requirements (canister 2.5 oz. or less). There is NO requirement for training for a private citizen who is not otherwise barred from carrying it.

Batons are another matter altogether.
