Unwritten check your gun at the door policy at Academy

So yesterday Im in Academy Sports back by the guns when I hear them call for an escort to walk a gun to the front. Normaly this would mean a person had just purchased a new toy, but, this was not the case! I was in the area for a good length of time and heard one of the sales associates give his opinion on holsters when I hear the customer say he had no Idea that you were supposed to check your gun at the door. Now I dont know if my fellow ccw holder(assumption) came up to the holster area and started checking the fit of his iron...which would have been a breech of protocol...or if he walked up and started the conversation with the associate. I do know that I once again looked for some sort of posting as I walked out with my newly purchased zombie-defense ammo and saw no signage of any kind about checking my gun. Does anyone know what Academy's policy is? I bought my Glock there and it would be a shame if I had to boycott them based on a silly check your gun at the door policy!

The Academy near me has a sign on the door. Ok to carry with CCW, and gun to be worked on or something of the sort has to be checked.

What state are you in? Most states require restrictive signs to be clearly posted at all entrances to the building in which business is being conducted.

Walt I'm in SC where 3" tall letters are required, but seldom seen. The signage requirements came after several businesses tried to limit concealed carry and the law came about to make uniform the signage and eliminate any bugaboos in sign placemnet, type and location. That being said I tend to pay attention to that when entering a business.

Academy's policy is employees can not carry in the store while working, and here in Texas if they fail to post the proper signs, they can whistle up a rope. I do not shop academy for anything whatsoever, nada, nothing, I once worked for them, and will have nothing to do with them. They have a policy that if you are bringing a gun in to have a scope mounted (they do not other services) you are required to have you gun checked at the front door, and I guess if you have a CHL and wish to have your's checked by an idiot cashier to see if it is unloaded and have it recorded by serial number you could.

I don't shop often in the Academy near me, but I do shop at the big Cabela's in Buda, south of Austin, and they have similar signs at the entrance, advising you to check in a gun you're bringing in for work or for a refund or exchange. I CC there all the time, there is no sign I've ever seen that restricts licensed gun owners from carrying concealed. Texas law has very specific language on what a sign must consist of to legally restrict concealed carry in an establishment. Without those specifics, a "no guns" sign in a store window is meaningless; if a clerk somehow sees your concealed weapon and asks you to leave, you must comply or face trespassing charges. That's why they call it CONCEALED carry.

My local Academy Sports policies are clearly posted at the door. They allow CC and require guns for service be checked at the door. This policy makes perfect sense as it protects the employees and patrons around the gun counter from accidental discharge of weapons being openly handled. My local store is full of knowledgeable and very helpful employees and will continue to get the majority of my firearms business.

First off, any sign that says NO GUNS allowed or other restrictions to ccw holders, carries NO FORCE OF LAW, unless that establishment is specifically on a list of banned carry zones by the State or Federal Government. Like school zones, government bldgs, post office etc. However, if the owner of the establishment asks you to leave then...you must leave!, or possibly face trespassing charges or other frivolous laws. The bottom line is this...concealed carry means exactly that. Keep your firearm concealed and use some common sense when you are carrying.

I sure hope you're only talking about your state.
There's plenty of states where signes ABSOLUTELY DO have the force of law. Fortunately I don't live in one of them, but I do travel through them and am acutely aware of it.

This is way off base. In September 2011 Federal courts upheld that no one in America has a right to carry a gun anywhere. The Heller and Mcdonald cases in the SCOTUS defined the right to own a gun and that the right was an individual one.

They may charged with criminal trespass. A store is not a public place, it is private property owned by an individual or company. Every stqate in the country has provisions that allow that store owner to ask anyone to leave. The most important thing to know about the second amendment is that it ends at someone else's private property. Thank God I still live in a country where I can throw someone off my property.

Please do not advise your students to ignore signs.
