Unregistered handgun

I'm new here, but have had a concealed carry permit for several years. I have a question that came up in a discussion and can't find a forsure answer to. So here goes. In Indiana, does the handgun that is carried by a concealed carry permit holder have to be a legal registered handgun according to law?
Maybe this has been brought up here several times, if so I'm sorry, but I need to know the answer to this question.

First off, please elaborate on what you mean by "legal registered". Do you have an illegal registered gun? There is not, to my knowledge, a "gun registration" in the United States. When a person buys a gun, there is a NICS check, but gun registration is tantamount to Gun Nuts confiscating weapons. They'd love to have a gun registration, but there isn't one. That isn't to say BATFE couldn't find your information if they wanted.

A long time ago, as I recollect, PA also registered handguns and they were the only ones allowed for cc.

Go to the top of the page and click on permit information, then to the Indiana section which gives most necessary information as well as the State code. I didn't see anything about having to register your weapon. Unless you find out otherwise, I would not try to register it. Someone may come looking for it some day.

Skipper, just what do you think all that paperwork you fill out when buying a gun is? Why do you think copies of the applications are kept? It isn't for the convenience of the gun seller. It is a government requirement, consequently, the gun IS registered in a system that keeps track of the ownership. I think the fellow was asking if the gun had to be registered with the police since he wanted to be completely legal when carrying. And, yes, some states do require registration (see below). Here was a person who was asking for help in a forum, not smart ass answers. Why do answers to a newbie's question have to be so derisive and combative? Maybe you will need a question answered on here sometime that is of paramount importance to you but insignificant to others. How do you want to be answered?

I would not carry the gun if you had ANY ideas that the gun may be "hot". I would not even own a gun that I thought was illegal. I read a story about a guy who bought a M-14, from a vendor, at a gun show a long time ago and found out that the gun was on the stolen list with the police. He found that out when he took it to a gunsmith to have some work done on it, yeah, they showed up at his door. Long story short, they did not file charges, but he lost his gun. In Indiana you don't have handgun registration, so if the gun is not a stolen one, then you should be able to carry it.

Second - Yes, I can be a smart ass, but it's better than being a dumb ass. Here's another quote from the same article, "At the moment, a minority of states including New York, Maryland, California, New Jersey, and Massachusetts require mandatory registration for handguns." If you live in one of these States, you as a gun owner, are going to have someone knock at your door one day, and demand you hand over your guns. That's being a dumb ass. Get involved, and get it changed!
