Universal m-1

Recently offered a Universal M-1 in trade for a firearm I had for sale.
I passed on the trade, but told the guy I might be interested later on.
I have only seen pics of the piece, looks in good condition.
He said it was a 2d gen. model, made in the 60's.
I know a little about M-1's in general, but nothing on the Universal.
Any one have one, or have experience with one?
I'm not looking for a wall hanger. Would like to be able to shoot it.

Depends on the internals.
I have a universal made in the mid 60s that I pretty much rebuilt. As Long as your action, head spacing, and chamber are all in good order your all set.
As with any firearm just use your head and make sure it wasn't abused.

Now from the practical point.

It most likely won't be a tack driver. It is an m1 carbine and as much as I love mine on a good day with hand loads I can get 3 inch groupings at 100 yard. I would use it for small game and Plinking. Aside from that its a fun piece.
The age of a weapon means nothing if it is well taken care of.
Prices on one of these? Depending on condition $400-$900 Around here. Higher in other states lower in others as well.

<edit due to phone>
How do they run compared to other m1s?
Fine. Just as good as some others. A good universal is better then a shotty HRS. Or a shotty Winchester. Although not worth as much. But you said you plain on shooting it.

Gen 1 Universal M1 carbines used GI Parts, the Gen II carbines completely redesigned the receiver, op rod and recoil system amongst others and utilized substandard commercial parts.

Only the Gen 1 guns are worth having, the others are dangerous junk.

After finding my paperwork from when I first got it and did all my research mine is a Gen 1. That being said. The parts from a Gen 2 are worth about $450 if you part it out.
