(Guns) – Individuals 55 and older would lose their right to keep and bear arms under a provision that’s expected to be included as part of a comprehensive United Nations Global Arms Trade Treaty.
UN Secretary Gen. Ban Ki-moon spoke about the impetus behind the controversial measure at a press conference over the weekend in New York City, the site of the final negotiations between the 193 Member States.
“Regulating the international transfers of both weapons and ammunition is a key component of a robust arms trade treaty, as is limiting civilian access to small arms and munitions,” said Ban Ki-moon.

“There’s an emerging consensus that certain groups should be restricted from possessing conventional arms, certainly those who fuel conflict, arm criminals or violations of international humanitarian or human rights law are at the top of the list,” Ban Ki-moon continued.
“But also, the international community believes segments of the population that present a danger to themselves and others, chiefly individuals deemed or adjudicated mentally defective and persons with attenuating cerebral faculties, should be added to that list.”
While Ban Ki-moon did not elaborate on what he meant by persons with “attenuating cerebral faculties,” a UN liaison with Amnesty International spelled it out in an interview with the Link Removed.
“Simply put, the UN believes guns don’t belong in the hands of the elderly,” said H. Michael Chase, an attorney for the human rights watchdog group.
“Pools of research show that a significant majority of gun-related suicides, accidental shootings, non-fatal negligent discharges are perpetrated by persons 55 and over,” Chase said.
“Along with the mentally ill, preventing those who are advancing in age from gaining easy access to firearms is a common sense way to save lives,” concluded Chase.
Dr. Michael Betti from the John Hopkins Center for Public Health Preparedness embraced the UN’s call to disarm senior citizens.

“Science tells us that we grow old,” said Dr. Betti, a neurologist who specializes in evaluating and treating patients with memory disorders. “And as we do, our reflexes diminish, our senses become impaired and our cognitive skills weaken … Therefore, as we enter our twilight years – clinically speaking, age 50 and above [Global life expectancy is only 67 years] – science tells us that we are in no shape to be handling or using a deadly weapon.”
In lieu of firearms, Dr. Betti suggests that seniors find other, non-violent and non-lethal options for self-defense.
“The optimal self-defense posture for seniors would include such items as a rape whistle or high-decibel air horn, quick-strike road flares, an electronic medical alert system, a cellular telephone with a large display, morphine injections, neon or glow-in-the-dark armbands, a mesh vest, a pith helmet with flashing headgear and a solar-powered radio,” said Dr. Betti.

Thus far, the White House has not offered a specific comment on the arms trade agreement or its call to disarm seniors, but to echo a recent statement issued by Secretary of State John Kerry, “The United States is steadfast in its commitment to achieve a strong and effective Arms Trade Treaty.”
As for the constitutionality of revoking an elderly person’s Second Amendment rights here in the U.S., at least one gun control advocate said, “That’s not a problem.”
“Look, Justice Scalia already ruled that the Second Amendment had ‘reasonable limitations,’” said William Kirchmeyer of the Coalition to Prevent Mass Shootings, in an interview with the Washington Post. “What can be more reasonable than taking guns away from people who are essentially ticking time bombs?”
What are your thoughts? Should we hang em up after a certain age?

I'm ove Grandmother opinion!

I'm 57 years old and in good health and great physical condition for any age, jogging, lifting weights, and working out on the heavy bag 5 days a week. If anyone thinks that they are going to take my guns due to age or any other reason.....COME AND TAKE THEM!!!!!

The idea is ridiculous. Unless a person shows they are a danger to themselves and others, age should not be a factor.
I have seen people at the range who are in their seventies that can outshoot people in their twenties, and handle guns safely. How can you tell an older person they are not allowed to have a firearm if someone breaks into their house?
Stop trying to find ways to take guns away from people. How old are most of the mass shooters?

Here's what would happen after they're taken from them...now the rate of accidents from guns and gun related suicides would fall in a different age bracket. So then they'll get stripped of their guns. Then they'll do research again and see that those same suicides and accidents are in a different age group (duh! They're the only ones left). So then they'll get stripped of their gun until finally no one has anymore.

**** THE UN... We have needed to get out of that world political quagmire years ago. The U.S, goes to the U.N. meetings to try and BUY more friends...We are assholes in the eyes of the world.
Sorry I just had to get it off my chest.

Glad to know that this ( in My opinion ) is just an April Fools joke, as it came out on 04/01!!!!

And if it is not an april fools joke, all politicians should be required to leave office on their 60th birthday due to having the same mental problems everyone else must have as well. After all aren't they the ones that decide if we should go to war or not? They are not capable of holding a gun due to their advanced age they should not have the right to require others to use a gun.

If you lack the mental capacity to act responsibly with a gun, why doesn't that apply to Congress? Most of them have obviously lost the ability to reason....just look at their definition of a spending cut.

ie: In the current budget we're spending a million dollars on a study of the purple sand flea, but next year we WANT to spend two million dollars for the study. Someone with 1/2 a brain steps in and says, we should only spend 1.5 million on the purple sand flea.....THEN.....they SCREAM "they want to CUT spending on this vital program by 1/2 million dollars".......WHAT?????

That's ridiculous. My grandfathe- in-law is 83 and we just recently had to take his rifles away because his dementia has set in so badly. I agree that people who are not conscious of what they are doing anymore shouldn't have access to firearms but that decision should be made on a case by case basis and by the family member or caretaker of that person, NOT the government. Disarming everybody 55 and older? GTFO

Gives them an excuse to start confiscation. First the over 55 group then all the rest. PLEASE ring my doorbell first to get my guns in 3 years. I will show you how well they shoot!

Age has no bearing on who should be allowed to have guns as it is an arbitrary setting. They say 67 is the average death age but that includes countries where people don't live past 40. Dad is going to be 85 in June. Still can handle a 1911 well. But then his side of the family have been known to live to near and past the century mark.

This is just propaganda. It is illegal for any agreement or treaty to be signed that violates the Constitution (Reid vs Covert I believe) . It doesn't matter that Obama wants it to happen, it can't. Plain and simple. the daily sheeple is FAR from a reputable source. The opinion of a moron from Johns Hopkins means NOTHING!

We have real fights to fight right now, lets focus on those. Sadly some on our side push nonsense as much as the anti's. Lets ignore nonsense and focus on real threats, because disarming people over 55 is not one of them.

There is not a single thing in the proposed treaty that calls for disarming any individual based on age. The article linked from the Sheeple website in the OP is an absolute lie and nothing but propaganda. It's a bit ironic that it comes from a source called "sheeple" since those are the only type of people who'd swallow such a lie hook, line, and sinker......sheep who don't think for themselves. Don't be a sheeple and don't believe everything you hear/read no matter how much you want to.

I can't stand propaganda (read: outright lies and calculated misinformation) even if it's created to further something I believe in. It makes its creators look desperate as well as those who push it along (not to mention making the "believers" look like ignorant suckers). I'm against the treaty for a variety of reasons. There's plenty of genuine things not to like about it. No need to lie about it and make "our side" look bad. Below is a link to a copy of the treaty from the UN's website published just a few days ago.
